Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

What size boat do u have? We have a 28 foot cabin cruiser. We put in at anchor marine or rogue harbor depending on what part of the the bay we want to be at.

We have a 21' cuddy, how long does it take for you to get there?

I started using Bay boat works in NE MD, the ramp is nice and not very busy, but the real selling point is that they have showers and that keeps the wife happy

Showers sound nice, what are the differences depending on where you launch from, were newbies here.

At anchor marine your launching into a protected river. At rogues harbor it's unprotected. If a big ship is coming up or down the river you'll be launching and/or retreiving into it's wake. From Palmerton i can make anchor marine in about 1.5 hours. Rogue harbor is about 2 hours. It costs 11 bucks to use rogue harbor. Some weekend you can just take a ride down to check out the area and conditions of the ramps. We go down several times a year for boating anf crabbing. Usually july 4th were there for the whole week. We rent one of the cabins at elk neck state park which also where rogue harbor is located.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Is there anybody on here who boats around the upper Bay area? We go down several times a summer and are looking for other people to meet up and raft up. I go to a lot of the popular haunts but always anchor by myself because I don't know the ettiquette for rafting with people I don't know. So I thought if I got to meet some people on one of the forums I could get some answers or some boating friends which would be better. Thanks.
Stan, did you ever imagine this thread would have over 2500 posts when you started this thread? Did you ever imagine the good strong friendships that have developed because of it? You are the man, thanks for starting this, it is my favorite thread from any forum I visit.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Thanks for the help, it's our first boat and were very excited about it. I'm planning on doing alot of work on it during the cooler months, I want to replace the floors, redo the seats and side pannels and whatever else I come upon that needs attention. Lime4x4 I was looing through your pictures and the work you did to your boat looks great, were you able to find the fiberglass and resin locally or did you have to order online. Glad I've found this website it's beem great so far. So were looking for some places to go besides the couple local lake around here and the Chesapeke sound great. I just need to figure out where to navigate around once we mae it there.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Hey guys, I'm finally back among 'the connected'. We lost power and internet Saturday evening and didn't get it back until 4PM Monday. I worked all night so I'm posting before I turn in.
THANKS AGAIN to Scott and Brandon for keeping me updated on the boat. I went down before work yesterday to turn the power on and cover the bridge. Other than a little rainwater in the forward bilge NO PROBLEM.
I ended up having bigger problems at home!

Adam- Come on down, but be warned- once you boat the Chesapeake you'll be spoiled and won't enjoy lake boating as much!!
I've been running around here for the past 25 years- and YES the drive is worth it.

That last 20 minutes to Rogues = Ugh! Nice area, but your tow vehicle will earn its keep!

I know. but we usually hang out in the bohemia river or loyds creek. So rogues is just closer to those areas

We are soooo envious of you all:)

Camping and boating have taken a backseat to Home projects much of this season. I'm hoping to get the parts for my 1960! motor this weekend. So much for vintage. but it sure is fun when she's runnin though. I see some of you get to Elk Neck & Rogues. We camp there spring and fall (full hookup of course :). We are an hour away in Chester County, PA. We have become very comfy boating around turkey point and the Bohemia. Gotta be careful how far I go since this old motor and 12 gallons of fuel don't get to far, but the it isn't so much about distance as it is quality time anchored, swimming, and lunch on the water. We'll be camping (ElkNeck S.P.) the 8th to the 13th and if all goes well be taking the boat too. Possibly we want to venture to loyds or cara cove. If we go to cara cove then maybe Bay's launch would be better then I'd have fuel to go to Nautigoose...on the water (would be our first).

I've been lurking here all summer and simply wishing. YOU ALL HAVE SAFE TRIPS AND LOTS OF FUN, maybe we'll meet some of you one of these days (weekends).

Enjoy,
Scott & Dot

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Bill, thanks for the suggestion. We'd been launching at Anchor Marina but we'll launch from Bay Boat Works this weekend. I have the same reason as you with showers keeping the wife happy.

The ramp is fine but there is only space for one boat to un/load and one space to wait for passengers fortunately we have only ever seen one other boat there at the same time. As your unloading there is a line of covered slips to your right. Stay close(less than 30 feet) to that last post of the roof as you round the corner. The first time there I drifted out becuase there are boats on the far side of the cannel and hit a hard bottom, no damage but now I stay in nice and close. once you round the corner they have small day markers past the next row of slips. I was there today and the marker at the turn near the ramp was missing, so just a heads up. There are some big boats past the ramp so the channel must be nice and deep, you just have to stay in it. The bay was alittle dirty today, and there were some small to medium branches, but not much to worry about. About 330 the Ne river was glass flat and I had to try a "speed run" of 53.2MPH @5200RPM's, yea I know not that quick, but I had fun tweaking the drive until I hit 53.

If anyone is coming to the pigless pig roast, make sure you bring a dish of some sort! There will be a keg of beer, and other stuff provided.
