Lots of pics coming this weekend. It will go together quickly now. I've got the plywood on order from Menards, a few minor details to iron out, wiring started and mounting of equipment. Getting excited!

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Ok so here's a good question. Yesterday I decided to ditch the 78' 150 blackmax for a new outboard.

1. If I put a 6" manual jackplate on the boat can I eliminate the "extra" 1/2" board that sits in the water?
2. Has anyone seen the performace difference on this type of hull?

I'm pretty much decided on the Merc 150 4S.

We added some more Gluvit yesterday, and did some wiring. Next time it will be installing the tank and cutting the floor and reassembly!

That "extra" board is pointless anyway. I eliminated it from both of my restores. All it does anyway is eventually compress, rot and leak. You should see a bit of performance improvement due to the setback offered by the jackplate.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Update. Deck is cut and mostly fit. I dropped off the boat to the dealer to get a new 150 hp Mercury Pro XS motor installed with new controls and smartcraft gauge. I read online that it actually makes 180 hp! super stoked! They called today and the transom was too weak after the mechanic inspected it today. After a talk with the mechanic it looks like the splashwell is pretty much cracked all the way across and I could never tell until he jerked the old motor around on the back of the boat by hand. I've got a guy lined up to do some welding on the boat to fix the flex with the some bracing from the splashwell to the sides, back to the transom. So I'm picking the boat back up from the dealer tomorrow and I'll pretty much have to all but pull the transom out to fix this correctly. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO you guys were right.:D I'll be slamming in a new transom this W/E. Luckily I have two sheets or marine ply left over from the deck install and a wide open weekend.(at least it is now)

Sorry I'm horrible about pictures. I need to get on it.

all but pull the transom out? sounds like you will be pulling it. welded reinf is great, esp with such a heavy motor <as he drips jealousy> but get the wood part right first. and be sure the reinf members won't get in the way of motor tilt/pivot or any of your planned activities.

Here are the pics of the broken transom. It is now at the welders and getting all fixed up.

MY wife and myself recovered the rod lockers and the seats today. For $46 in vinyl and leftover marine plywood I'd say they turned out well. Should be back from the welder tomorrow and ready for the transom install. Sorry no pics of the big hunk of wood. 3/4" marine ply from menards(highly recommend this stuff) and exterior wood glue with some fiberglass resin from Napa and we're all set. Will have some pics of the frantic install.

I may set a record because I plan to have it in the water by the 5th of June. I have seven working days total between now and then.

For the record. The transom wood was replaced and was good. The cracks I believe happened like this. The two between the bolt holes was initial transom rot and they discovered on transom install. They then put huge *** washers on them and it worked until it cracked out the splash well. It was not PT wood in the transom but the exterior hunk of ply was and there was some pitting. Easy clean up as none of it was inside. I could've had it welded, ousted the exterior piece and installed my jack plate and it would've been fine. But this way I should have easy 10 years of hard great lakes fishing out of her with the new 150 opti.

Boy, your transom skin has led a hard life. After it's welded, it should last a long, long time.

The welder is going to put a 1/4 inch plate on the top of the spashwell where the bolts come through and it should be really strong. He builds racecars and anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

Maybe for a "class record." 22' V5 Mariner 150 hp class? I'm game!!!!

Actually thats a horrible idea for me. I used to do sportsman drag racing and anything like that is crack cocaine to me.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Well the boat made it's first big water voyage 6/1/13 and it went great. I've got a lot of rough edges to smooth out but it's turning out great. Had my motor set way too low and it was spraying so bad on the maiden voyage at a local res that it was coming over the spashwell into the transom as effective as a firehose while on plane.:faint2: no joke here...you literaly could not see the sides of the outboard cowl.....borderline panic attack. Luckily I had 1500gph bilge pump all wired in.:D I can assure I needed it. Raised the O/B about four inches and now I'm going to try a new prop pitch this w/e to try to go 50 mph. It went 49 mph and that's WAY too close to 50 not to go 50 for me. Two new Humminbird's are working great, and let me tell you, if you buy a new Merc, buy the smartcraft gauge. Price is a bit scary but the features and controllability is fantastic.

Ok. So here is my assesment. The hull is amazing. I've been fishing for 30 years and this boat will be with for a long time. It leaks about 5-6 gallons over 12 hours of big water fishing and I just don't care because of how well it runs, handles and fishes. I'm going to put in an 80# Minnkota as a Bow mount and two batteries with a dual pro charge in front of the console under the seat as I think it needs more bow weight. I'll add a 15 hp kicker eventually but honestly the 150 pro xs is so sweet, no hurry here. I'm going to build a custom locking bait box in the front were the deck open between the two cabinets.

By the end of summer it will be carpeted and fully trimmed on the inside. Paint will have to wait til I get the O/B paid off.

Epic fishing boat for big water.
