Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I haven't heard anything of Overton reopening. I don't know how they would go about that as they moved all the docks to Hemenway back in 07 (maybe temple too, don't know, memory fuzzy). I have a feeling it's not going back until the lake comes up another 40-50',,, and the economy is doing better.

I was up at Ann Margaret beach this spring and it was pretty shallow up there, 20' way out in the lake. I didn't motor far enough up to see Overton, so not sure where it was then.

Yea, they did move about half the covered docks to T-Bar and I thought the other half to Calville. I didn't know some went to Hemenway.

Maybe there's a plan to re-open the launch ramp, camping area and store since they're building another fee station up there.

My neighbors were married on Ann Margaret Beach. It was '96 or '97 I think. That beach was awesome then. The sand was white and pure. I'm going to scan some of my older lake shots and post them at some point. I have some great pics of AM Beach the was it was before this last drought which changed it into just another piece of desert protruding into the lake.

Careful guys. Wouldn't want this cool thread to get into trouble. Maybe we need to leave this one as just plain obvious. Thanks for the self modulating though; I know you're holding back :)

Found a couple of pics of Columbine Falls.

This one was taken way back when you could take your boat right up to (and even under!) the falls

This was taken a year or 2 later. A flash flood washed sand and rock down from the canyon and it piled up around the bottom of the falls. You can see the pile at the bottom of the pic.

This is me in Columbine on the roof of a Houseboat. Note the teeny falls in the background, but we had just been all the way in as is evident by the wake. I think this is October '87, 1209' . . .

That's cool. Funny, I houseboated that year as well. We stayed over at Secret Cove on the east side of the entrance to Bonelli. It sure was a different lake then when it was up that high. The gyps were awesome to jet ski in. We used to call that area Jet Ski Heaven. Always smooth and it was like jet skiing in an aquarium, turtles and all.

In '88 we took the houseboat all the way up past Pierce Ferry to the entrance to the Grand Canyon as a launch point for the jet skiis to see how far up we could ride. We carried gas cans in the trays, filled up when we guesstimated the distance we could go and left the cans on a beach to fill up on the way back. Bummer you can't do that anymore.

Here's a pic of the buoy marker marking the end of your journey if heading up the Canyon. Rapids are right around the corner. It's 50 - 60 miles from Pierce Ferry. Never GPS'd it, but I know it's at least 50, and closer to 60 I think.

1987... Man it would be great to be 27 again! My wife and I visited Hoover Dam in October 1981 (In Vegas to get Married) and the Lake was full then and the side tubes were shooting from the canyon walls.

It sure would be nice to have all that water again. We just hit 1130' lake elevation today

I looked up the level for late October, 1981 and it was only 1195, so not as full as I remember. They must have needed power from the turbines to be letting out of the sides...?

They let water out the sides (tubes), to relieve the expected water levels coming down the river if it's to great.
They dump down the spillway on the side when expectations are not calculated correctly.
Man, what a sight...... It's to protect the dam.......

The water flow for the turbines run thru the dam out to the bottom.

I believe. :D

That is correct! :) The water comes through the 4 intakes, goes through the turbines and out on either side of the bottom of the dam.

Have you ever been on that dam tour? :D It's a must-do at least once. Very impressive sight especially once you get into the bowels of the dam. They used to let you all the way down to the floor, where the turbines are. Now you get a birds eye view from a platform above which is still very cool.

Why yes I have......In 1986 by a friend of mine (engineer), who worked there. Private tour!;)

You remember the tunnels you walked down?
With the water running down along the sides?

Yea, I don't need a 230' mega tsunami bearing down on me! Funny, depending on who you talk to, GC Dam's life span is 90 - 500 years not-tagged-smiley-4098.gif
