Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Anyone heading out Memorial Weekend?

Nope, I usually avoid those big weekends like the plague... Though, with the low lake levels and high gas prices, it hasn't been bad the last couple of times I ventured out then.

Have fun out there 12V, here's to some good weather for your weekend!

Thanks fd. Just remember, Memorial Weekend @ TBar isn't your typical busy, holiday marina because of it's location. ;)

I remember the first Memorial day I spent @ TBar... After I made it through my 20's, I didn't venture out on Memorial Day to the river or lakes much anymore because the crowds. Our houseboat trips on Mead always started the weekend after.

Then, one year I had this great last minute idea on Friday that I wanted to leave that afternoon to get in the annual Memorial Weekend areal poster at Copper Canyon (what we had always referred to as Party Cove) on Lake Havasu the next day. This was around '90-'91. Every Memorial Weekend for a few years prior there had been areal photos made into posters that were taken on Saturday of all the boats rafted up on the cove. I couldn't even tell you how many. My wife & I decided to go out there and get in that pic - and we did - by spending about 10 hours in the cove that Saturday.

We were in our '68 Winnebago in my buddy's front yard in Havasu when I woke up the next morning about 5am. It was one of those awesome, crisp mornings you wanted to be on the water skiing and all I could think about was the water being all chopped up from the crowds of boats, much less the boat parking lot fiasco with the motorhome. It was then that I got out my map to see about how long it would take to get to Mead. I woke up my wife and told her we accomplished what we wanted to, so let's head up there. She didn't have to think for even a second, and we were getting ready to go. A couple other friends of mine were there in their camper as well and decided to join us.

A couple hours later we arrived at Temple Bar and could hardly believe we were looking at some of the best water conditions possible..no boats (well, very few - We saw 2 or 3 on the water) a slight breeze to take the edge off, and calm waters. We headed up to the Gyps where we spend the day with our own private party in solitude, which was a total flip from what we had the day before.

The poster is still around, somewhere, rolled up somewhere in the archives. I should get it out and hang it up at TBar just to give us a little reminder of how good we have it.

Even today it hasn't changed much as far as crowds. And with fuel prices and the "low lake levels" it keeps us happy!

I'm going to say top of Overton, but it doesn't look right for anywhere  Second guess is Grandwash Bay/God's Pocket, but that looks even less right.

You've been by it

Here is what you're supposed to see in it:

It's known as 'The Indian".. smiling up at the heavens from the mountainside.

Dang it!!!

I was on the road all day, but was going to say "the indian god" (because that's what the .jpg file is named :D)

Here's one I took last weekend.......

Cool story of Havasu and Tbar 12V. I remember years ago at Echo, having to be shuttled to the remote parking lot by the rangers station since the parking lot was so full, hundreds of vehicles stacked up on the ramp and dirt lot north of the fish cleaning station. I haven't seen it like that for several years, though the dirt launch ramp and remote parking lot from 2 years ago was a real pain. It's much better now with the higher lake level.

Right across from T-Bar, north of the Temple in the South Virgin Mountains below Bonelli Peak. Here's a shot of it from our trailer. You might have to look for it, but it's almost in the middle, to the right of the TV antenna:

I can see it. Cool! That first picture (cropped from same?) is deceiving. I though it was shot from an Airplane and the shadows were water . . .

I too thought the shadows were water and from a plane. I was looking on the map to match the bends, nothing matched......lol

I can see now with it cropped like that you wouldn't know what the heck it was unless you had heard the tale of the Indian... lol

That reminds me of a joke we played on one of the women on a houseboat trip in the early 90's.

We had stopped at TBar for fuel on our first full day out of Calville heading up to Sandy Point, and just before were rounding the last corner to head up Gregg I noticed an odd shaped rock up on a hill to the left that looked like someone sitting there.

I got everyone except her in on a hastily made up practical joke that I had talked to one of the dock hands at TBar and he told me there was an indian in the middle of a 5 day ritual up the lake. He had to sit up on a hill for a ceremony, etc etc. So we're all up on top yelling at this supposed 'Indian'. Things like 'white man's comin' and hells comin with us!'

Well it turns out that it looked so muck like a real Indian she got very upset with us. Even when we told her it was just a rock she thought we were just trying to calm her down. We did finally get her convinced - and she knows me well enough - so it was funny in the end, and she still laughs about it.

To this day we even still call that place the Indian Rock as a point of reference when we're talking about traveling on the lake.

I thought I remembered some art nouveau 12 point star thing from the tour. And that was like 20 years ago. Don't they have a map of how the stars were aligned when the dam was built right around there. Some design on the ground?

Wow, so they were into the astrology thing and astrological events when it came to the building of the dam. Almost like a superstitious thing.
