Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

We were out April 2-3. I remember it well
:eek:nthego:

You're right. I remember you telling me that I could find your kid's prints in the sand at the beach that you recommended...It was April 11 that I posted about our "experience"

Well my thoughts were a beach within 20 or 30 miles, not such a bad trip. Then that would be the 'base camp' and those that wanted or were able could travel further up stream from there. This would be a place that those who wanted to camp over night could do so and head back in the morning, camp fire, tents, the works. This is what we have done on the Mohave in the past.

Sandy Beach (or whatever it was) that 12V suggested for fuel drop-off just north of South Cove would probably work just fine for camping, looks to have plenty of beach. It's 15 or so from Tbar. I wouldn't mind making a base camp and venturing out from there. Sam (AKA mz :joyous:) could even join in with the grand kids if he didn't want to run his boat up into the GC.

What does everyone else think? 12V probably wants to stay at his place in Tbar, others might want to stay there too.

Looks like we are going to be $10-20 lighter next year.... I just received my boat registration renewals for next year and there's a new decal (tax) required for NV, the AIS decal for invasive species.

Just a heads-up to all the guys coming into NV from out of state that you'll need this decal next year. For Mead/Mohave you'll need the LNMRA sticker and the AIS decal.

AIS info

Yeh, Everybody is worried about Quagga Mussels. We went to Powell last April, had some water in the bilge & OD, they asked where I'd been, let us thru when I told them the Ocean. In our local freshwater lakes they do an onboard inspection at the launch ramp, don't care where you've been, even if it's rain water, they will send you home & you can't come back for a week in you're not Dry.
Hadn't really thought about it but anyone know what they're doing at the Lake Mead Launch Ramps?

Nothing that "I've" seen, but we are infested with quaggas already. I read up on it a bit and think we are just in the beginning of their plans, washing stations, inspections. More to keep the mussels from spreading to other waters. Though, we don't have zebra mussles and they might try to keep those out.

I don't plan on entering Nevada, TBar is in Arizona, and even then Nevada boating laws permit a out-of-state registered boat for up to 90 days. There is a lake use fee that has nothing to do with any state, it's a Lake Mead use and entrance fee, we pay that all the time for Mohave. As for the AIS that Nevada has I'm not sure, in Arizona there is also a statute but no fee involved unless you need to power wash after an inspection. The Nevada inspection program is at Nevada ramps BUT since this is a new program I would not be suprised if they are working the bugs out and it would be worth a call to Nevada DOW and Arizona Game and Fish just to be sure before the date arives.

LOL, I guess you are right as I never thought of not having to launch in NV to boat on Mead/Mohave :D. I hope AZ doesn't do the AIS tags as I fish Willow Beach often, so I would have to get the NV and AZ tags.

Good luck out there NW, I haven't been on Mead since summer and not sure how the fishing is there. I went to Willow Beach 3 times over the past several weeks, 1st trip a bust, 2nd trip caught a 30, 16 and 9, 3rd trip a 13 and an 8. It's been pretty good down there now, but Willow can be finicky...

I am thinking about heading down to Echo Bay on the 1st for a few days. Anyone have any fishing tips? Specifically whether I should troll swim baits or try chumming with anchovies. Also any ideas on where I should head? North or South? I have a tin boat with 35hp.

I haven't been out to Echo since summer, but we were knocking them dead down by Ramshead Island. During the day I would be casting or trolling, soaking chovies are an option, but you'll have to chum heavily during the day to keep the stripers interested. During the night you can throw out lights to bring the shad up and the stripers follow, (fish with chovies) but it's pretty friggin cold out at night now. If you mark a deep school during the day, give it 30 minutes to an hour then move on if they don't want to bite. Drop some chovies to them or try jigging with spoons/cast masters, shad plastics. I would be prepared to troll deep 30-60', downrigger, leadcore, even a bunch of sinkers on the line to get deep, what ever it takes.

Had a great time out on Mead today..Launched about 7:30 and it was cold..We were able to net shad in Las Vegas wash and caught 8 stripers from 3 to 4 lbs..Fished about 50 feet deep with 7 or 8 boats in the area all catching fish..It turned out to be a real nice day as long as you stayed in the sun...Heading out Friday morning to do the same trip...

Looked again at the weather. I think I will push my trip back to the 8th . I am hoping for 55+ degrees. No Whiners, did you really find most of the Stripers at 50 feet deep? That seems pretty deep for winter time. I was hoping they went shallow when the water cooled off.

Good to hear you got into them NW. Hope the rest of your trips pan out.

tt, I completely forgot about live bait that NW was using :frusty: as I haven't done it in years, works extremely well. I went out with a buddy where NW was several years back and NW did much better than we did, size wise. You need a cast net to get shad, and somewhere to hold them, bucket or livewell.
