Re: Can not figure the Age of the boat Restoration Project!!

This is my first post but have lurked for a while. I love the colors.
I have a 1958 Arkansas Traveler Aluminum 14ft. I did her over 13 Years ago.
Wish I knew then what I know now. I might have to use your color lay out.
I did all red with a white stripe. I originally had my Grandfathers 1957 Evinrude Lark. Still have motor long story short. I got a refurb 1980s 35hp
Johnson. Alot less head aches. It also keeps the wife happy that it runs.
Which is very important. I will need to post some pics.

OK. I got some more informationt to ask from you guys. I went ahead and bought a deep cycle charger for at home so when i am off the lake I can charge. I found this solar power charger at harborfreight. ITs 15 watts trickle charge or regular. If I have it hooked up to the battery while I am riding down the river and parked just listening to music. Do you think this would work to keep the battery topped off. The Amp i thought was 1000 watts is only 500. I just dont want to have to put 2 batteries in this small of a boat. I have included a link to the item. PLEase take a look and let me know what you think.

I was wondering if anyone had a trumpet air horn sitting around. I need one that would fit this era of a boat. One that is long and chrome. I see them on Ebay but not sure if they work. I could by new ones from West marine or stores like that but they want 100.00 any ideas

HEy gang. Got some new pictures to post. The Old boat is doing well. I havent posted in awhile because I havent been able to do much with it. But have been on here looking at everyone elses progress!! I finally figured out the whole battery thing. Since then I have started working on the carpet. I got my hands on some outdoor industrial floor matts that are 4x5 feet long. I think these will be great and hold up better than the cheap stuff from lowes. they were alittle pricey but have solid thick rubber backing. I do have one question. I have noticed that when i hit a wave a little bit of water comes in at a couple of rivets. The rivets are on and around the ribs that run across so its hard to see which one exactly i need to seal on the bottom. any suggestions? i was jus going to sand them all down and seal them all. since they are under the water no one is going to see them. Also I am in the market for a electric trumpet style horn to put on it to keep it vintage. any suggestions as where to find one. ebay is a hit or miss. I will take some pictures of the boat tomorrow to show the progress so far. THanks guys..

A product called Gluvit applied from the inside will seal them right up.

OK HERES the update so far. the carpet will go between the ribs. i did this because it would be to hard to keep the carpet down on them. i am giong to paint the ribs black and gray to match the carpet. ALSO YOU will notice the sub box and speakers i installed.

i have not put the carpet down. i am going to cut all the pieces before i start gluing it down.

I ALSO had a small leak at a rivet i couldnt to front the inside so i took jb weld first and then marine epoxy over that. hhopefully this will work.

The JB will work just fine. I have used it on mine for some inaccessible loose rivets as well.

Stick a hose in it in the driveway. That's what I did and it revealed a pin hole that was underneath the transom knee brace. What wasn't dripping it was streaming out!

Hi,
Nice looking boat, you did a really nice job on it.

How did you resolve your lower unit problems? How much damage to the wallet??

Just curious, a lot of people including myself use your past questions as a source of information, if you find the answer please post back what it was for the rest of us poor slobs :D

Keep checking your rivets, you're on the right track with Gluvit or JBWeld. I found a good single trumpet horn on Schmebay for $20...just had to ask/confirm that it was working with the seller...they are out there. Did you work out your LU problem? What kind of wood are you using for the seat backs? And how is the pass-through space with that set up? I'm thinking of wood bench seats in my aluminum runabout but can't decide on a solid seat back with low-cut pass-through, or just two separately braced seat backs. Right now, I have some jerry-rigged swivel bass boat seats in mine. I think the bench seats look classier and more original...are they comfortable during a day on the water?

Re: Can not figure the Age of the boat Restoration Project!!

TMClavy,
Thanks for the help. BAD BAD NEWS!!!! well after inspecting the underside of the baot, everywhere i put jb weld , it cracked or came off!!!!! This is not going to work. I need to figure out how to seal the one rivet that is leaking. i was thinking since its aluminum and so old that maybe when i hit waves the boat is flexing and causing the hole to open up. because before i put jb weld on it , it olnly leaked when i hit a wave. so who knows!! As far as the seats are concerned i took good quality treated wood and sanded down the edges. I also prefer the pass throgh. it is much easier and more appealing than a solid back. I plan on buying the cooler cushions in white. one that is 96qt for the bottom seats and then two smalls one for front back rests... i will have to check out that website out about the horns..hows your boat coming.

Re: Can not figure the Age of the boat Restoration Project!!

Sorry about not keeping you guys updated on the lower unit. I was able to find a guy here locally that has a place much like a cemetary with boats and motors. he had a 1958 35hp manual shift motor that match perfect for the my 1961 40hp. he only wanted 50 for the lower unit. he wanted 100 for the whole thing but i didnt need the motor. it works great now.

Re: Can not figure the Age of the boat Restoration Project!!

You can try bucking that rivet tight, with a small sledge and bucking bar, or you could braze over it. If it's flexing enough to shuck off the JB Weld, might need to apply a small dab of tar...ugly but it sticks and works forever. Thanks for the input on the seats. The Texas Maid is coming along...hope to water test with two 57 OMC Big Twins soon. Got the topsides painted, larger gas tank for running twins, plumbed the tank to feed two motors, and mounted easy-connect battery posts to the transom. One of these days, I'll find the seat configuration that I like and stop messing with it.

Re: Can not figure the Age of the boat Restoration Project!!

Hey Gang I need some advice. The Weather has finally warmed up enough to start back up working on Graysea. Well I took her out Saturday and found where the leak is coming from. It is actually coming from the keel. I tried last year to patch it with JB weld and it popped off. Any suggestions on how to fix this leak forever. I didnt know if I Should just get a welder to fix it or what.. Help!
