Can we see something in each other besides enemy?

Like CJY, I need to get a break from all of the polarized politcal discussion. It burns me out to realize that so many people think of people like me as their enemy, and I'm tired spending time trying to debate people who think prison camps for illegal immigrants and nuclear bombs are the solutions to anything. I posted a thread asking for book recommendations and I'm posting this thread in the hopes that we can find a way to see in each other something other than enemy, although I'm not super hopeful. Still, the question is:

What are your hobbies, besides surfing iBoats? Do you make things, write things, paint things, what?

I am in the middle of building my second skin on frame kayak. I will try to get some pictures posted. I also am in the middle of fixing up a couple of old cars, a 63 Valiant, and if I can't sell it this week, I am going to continue on with my 62 Mercedes 190D.

I have posted this before I think, but for some time I did staind glass work. I do some woodburning but dont have any pictures.

Here is my favorite piece. I gave it to my uncl, otherwise I'd have better pictures. I have no idea how long it took to make.

I am really surprisingly old fashioned. We make homemade brats, italians, hungarians, etc. Homemade wine as well.

Woodrat, you are not my enemy, just one of my favorite debating partners... this is only an exercise of the mind, nothing personal, nothing to get pissed about, nothing to stress over.

We all have different opinions and I feel it's fun to debate them...maybe, just maybe we can change another opinion, but most likely we will only define our own, and maybe modify it somewhat... that is what discourse and debate is all about.

This is my first kayak, frame and then the finished boat:

This is the one I'm working one now. It is a little further along than this now, but I don't have up to date pix yet. It is a replica of a West Greenland kayak in the helsinki museum. I'm working from survey drawings that a friend made of the original boat. It is all held together with pegs and lashings.

really nice glass piece, Pony!

I used to make beer more, I've kind of gotten out of the habit lately. I did smoke a bunch of salmon this summer, and years ago when we butchered our first pig, we made our own bacon. I am just getting ready to smoke some more bacon later this week.

Do you salt cure the bacon first, or just smoke it fresh?

Cool Kayak Woodrat. I don't seem to have much time for "making things" right now. Bummer. Did finish my basement over the summer (I know, stupid time to do that, should have been boating). Now it is hunting season, so any free time will be spent in the woods, or on the boat getting there. Love archery season - the changing colors of the leaves, the cool, brisk weather, and fresh venison. Oh, and I also got my "vintage" (1980 - but when trying to find parts they seem to think it is vintage - thanks Bob for your help) motorcyle running again.

Re: Can we see something in each other besides enemy?

I have turned my garage into a wood shop with all the fun gadgets. I have made hutches, a dining room table last summer and usually anything else my wife tells me to build.

I have also spray painted a few vehicles. Upon graduating HS I spent a summer spraying cars and have just recently began to spray again. I love to spray, but absolutely hate doing the body work.

I enjoy being with the family at the lake. Most of our free time is spent their. We are planning on building a small house their next year. The wife is done with the leaking roof on the trailer.

In the past I enjoyed woodworking, target shooting, and camping. However, the only thing all five of us enjoy together is the lake.

I have no enemies, except those who wish to do me or my family bodily harm.

We all have the same objectives, its just the road we take differs.

As for me, rasing 3 kids has got me busy enough to not have time for much of anything.

The only project I have is to slowly fix up our house. The kitchen needs upgrading, some new furniture, a new garage door, and the biggest project, new siding.

I really hope that I can get to my lifelong dream of building up my 66 Impala drag car. I will need a decent garage first.

I will get some deer hunting in as we have a new place that is nearby.

Salt and sugar cure first.

Wow tommays. That is cool!!

I am kinda struggling for a hobby. The boating thing of course, but I am not doing some of the cool things I used to. Guitar, ceramics, I don't ski enough anymore either. I want to restore a boat actually, but I am pretty sure it would sit and then I'd be one of the guys selling it on eBay to the next potential restorer . . . Hmmmm.

I'm with crunch BTW. None of you guys are enemies. Debate to me is a hobby and usually a lot of fun.

Spraying is definitely an art CJY. I painted my son's first car in the garage a couple of years ago. It was a two stage deal. I really enjoyed doing it but learned that you really need a lot better light than what I had.

I bought an HVLP gun and that was slick. Very little overspray.

I was looking at one of those for repainting my outdrive. I have the thing all torn apart and I am putting all new bearings and a better gimbal ring and what not in there and I was wondering if I would get a better job with one of those spray rigs than I could do with a a can.

Tailgunner over on the restoration board did a short "how to" with those guns, might want to look it up.

I enjoy riding the 4 wheeler, shooting praire dogs and playing with my dogs.

As been stated before, I don't think of anyone as an enemy nor do I hate or dislike anyone here.

Group hug? 8)
