That to me is extremely selfish. Maybe they're selfish people. Selfish people rarely make good parents.

How can you love your child unconditionally if you're already trying to add conditions to the way it looks or thinks?

Speaking of babies and genetics, you think it is wrong to test a mother for a gene that could produce a birth defect?

I would be curious about what other social norms you think should be looked at critcally?

Debating accepted norms is not butting into people's business. Its challenging and enlightening actually. People have a right to their own choices AND people have a right to debate/discuss those choices.

No, of course I don't think its wrong to test a mother for a gene that could produce a birth defect. I think thats a little different than how attractive or how smart can/will my child be.

There's plenty of social norms that aren't healthy and lead down that proverbial slippery slope to oblivion. I doubt the Romans woke up suddenly one day and became morally corrupt. Or the Greeks, or the....the list goes on.

If we don't stand up and say, "Hey, thats not right", pretty soon it becomes acceptable. And thats dangerous.

Only one of your quotes of mine could be construed as me demonizing this particular couple. The one quote about "Maybe they're selfish people". Otherwise my rant is about the selfish mentality in general when trying to have a child.

And when I say, "Maybe they're selfish people" its only a hypothetical to explain perhaps why they would approach this situation in this way.

Now back to the issue instead of the side bars.

Apparently I'm in the minority when it comes to believing people should be happy to be parents and to do their best with what they're given, instead of trying to have everything their own way. Thats really what it boils down to.

How spoiled are we really? How long before we can order almost the exact child we want instead of letting fate/chance/God decide? Its so pathetic that we make an event that should be totally selfless into something totally selfish.

Personally, I can't wait until you can control the genes of your own
egg/sperm and hand-pick attributes of your future children, let alone

So you'll have two distinct types of people. People who have been ENGINEERED and people who are NATURAL. What types of problems will that cause? I know genetics has limits on what type of person you turn out to be, that environment plays a larger role, but just think about the consequences of that. Its staggering. How about when the government starts threatening to cut funding for children with disabilities because they could have been "prevented" - i.e. aborted?

I see young teenagers dressing more provacatively but can't say I have seen any 5 year olds. Maybe it is a Louisiana thing!

My wife's ex daughter-in-law lets her grand children every 2 week ends. We have to re-train them each time. And get them off the tv. Such a sorry excuse for parenting. With rules in effect here, they like to spend more time, and ask questions that are answered correctly.

There will never be peace all the time (on this earth). There will NEVER be harmony in this world. There will always be wars and strife. Why? Because we are a passionate people. We love hard, and we fight hard.

So instead of raising your child to be a leader, to be a shepherd, you want your child to be a sheep? To the be same, colorless, and bland. That perhaps is the most dangerous social norm of all - that its not acceptable to be different. I want MY children to be their own person. Stand on their own merits, believe their beliefs, fight their battles and to know they're becoming the person God intended them to be! Not the person I tried to design them to be.
