Its 110/18 needle. Thats about as big as it can handle. Make sure the thread is uv safe. I usea 69 size thread that works with the needle. Don't buy the cheap thread. Sailrite has really good product.

I got these at wal mart. It is exactly what the lady at JoAnns fabric said the local marinas use when they do this. On the thread display it is on the bottom shelf. Says upholstery on one shelf.

The plastic square is the needle case.

Thanks for the tips and advice guys.

Wondering about paint lately. Can I use topside paint on my whole hull? Do I need a bottom paint if I’m in fresh water and the boat is trailered. At most I am in the water for 8 hours. Never over night or anything.

Would love to hear what you guys use or suggest. The plan is white for main colour and red for accents. Thanks. Getting ready to soon flip the boat so I can get the bottom side all done. Gonna try roll and tip or roll and roll as well.

I’m there right now! (paint drying as I write).
i did a bunch of reading on the “paint your boat with tractor paint “ and decided to go that way. Paint for trailer queens 😉
had some issues with compatibility and learned the hard way that They now sell oil AND water based rust paint 😐
just laid my final coat on my transom and it looks really good!
i was very surprised how smooth it went on with the roll n roll method.
that thread is definitely worth the time to read.

I recommend using TEX 90(V-92) Thread

https://www.ebay.com/itm/UV-Sun-Prot...x37FqktkeYNKZw

and these Needles...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/10-SCHMETZ-...0AAOxyBotTXWuQ

The 3 KEYS to sewing upholstery with your 15-91 are...
1.) Top Thread Tension for V92 thread it should be around 5-6
2.) Bobbin Tension. Should be tight enuf so when you hold the tread and bobbing like a Yo-Yo and you jerk it the bobbing will drop about 1".
3.) Presser foot tension. Should be loose enuf to allow the vinyl to feed but NOT to tight. When sewing 6 Layers i.e. Piping, you'll need to loosen the pressure and assist the feed by slightly pulling the vinyl thru the foot. Not to hard but just enuf to get it to feed. Walking Foot machine makes sewing multiple layers much easier but there's a price to pay for that luxury!!

Tractor Paint or Rustoleum Pro Oil Based all work well with the added Hardener. Lots of guys have used it with Great Results. Roll n' Roll or Spray all work well with it.

Added hardener? I am in Ontario Canada. Wondering what hardener I should be looking for? Gonna try the rustoleum I think since they have the colours I want. And for primer?

I think the plan to support the boat upside down is I'm going to lay 2 or 3 4x4's across from side to side. then maybe a couple of center supports to go to just shy of the deck and put some foam or carpet on them so it just meets the deck. Then when I flip the boat, we can carry it on on the supports and adjust the height with cinder blocks maybe? Should the side walls support the boat with one in the center as well? I hope so. I have never done this before so I hope it works ;)

As I mentioned when we meet, if you need some help with the flip just let me know Dezi, I owe you one👍.
i used Tremclad which is made by Rustolium.
thinned with a paint thinner with mineral spirits and Tremclad primer as well. all off the shelf at Canadian Tire.
the hardener I used was Centauri and they actually labeled it “Activator”, should be able to get at pretty much any auto body supply shop I would expect.
pictures likely tomorrow when I can get some daylight.

Thanks red. I may take you up on that offer. I hope within 2 weeks I will be flipping it. I want to get some more support/work done inside the boat first. Since I have 2 days this weekend and permission from the admiral I’m going to try and get a bunch done.

Hey everyone:)

Still at it. Slower than expected but moving in a forward motion. Feels like a turtles pace though :(. Decided this past weekend to get the trailer home and install the new keel and bow rollers. Then the wife and I got the boat back on the trailer so I could pull it outside and finally get the garage cleaned up. Once that was finished up I wanted to see how the sundeck was going to work with the cc in there. NOPE. No room. Oh well so back to seats and doghouse. But guess what. No measurements or patterns for the wood in the back :( that really sucks as I now have to figure out how to put it back the way it was. Fingers crossed. I do have the dog house, seat cushions and the flip down top thingy so I have something to work with. Hope to start cutting some wood this week after work when I have time.

Question about trailers and wobble rollers. I have 2 quads that are at the back of the trailer. Are the wobble rollers supposed to sit on the strakes? Or between? Right now they are between. I want to make sure I’m not causing any stress on the hull when it is on the trailer. Keel rollers are taking most of the load.

Pics to come sometime soon as to what I have been up to.

Hey Everyone. Been a while since I posted some progress and pics. Sorry, been crazy busy at work. 6 days a week sucks, especially this time of year :). Oh well, need a paycheque to fund this project right?

Anywho, been testing some ideas for mounting my aluminum dash to the wood frame. This worked out really well IMO at least. Drilled a hole, filled with PB then drilled and tapped. Held the bolt really well. Tight and strong.

Happy with those results. Then on to filling the front bow seating boxes with foam. Had the boy help out and loved watching it expand. He did an awesome job pouring while I mixed for him. Barely had to trim anything.

Also I got the front seat lid on, PB'd, Screwed and filleted. I may run some 6" 9oz cloth along the edges. Don't know yet as I used a ton of PB to fill the voids. It is sealed up for good!

I had to cut a hole for access to the bow bolt thingy that you attach the winch to so I picked up a circle jig and 1/4 router bit. Worked AWESOME!!! Smooth clean cut and fit perfect.

I think I am going to recess it so it sits flush up front. I have a rabbet bit I will use for that.

More pics in the next post :)

K. Then I had to figure something out to cover my chases at the back and make it water tight... So I built a cardboard enclosure and put some packing tape on the inside and poured some foam in to fill it up.

All good. I started to shape it tonight to give it a nice slope and curve. Still more work to do then coat it with resin and then some 6oz cloth.

As you may have read in the earlier posts, I cannot use a sundeck anymore as I don't have the room. So I dug out what I kept and threw it in there to see what I am up against to build new again. I did have the cover and seats re done 2 years ago so they are like new still. Guess Gray, White and Red will be my colours ;)

Tonight I sanded the bilge and motor mounts. They are ow PB'd and curing.

I sure hope the wife doesn't get a flat tire tomorrow. Had to "borrow" her jack to hole the mounts in. I saw this done in another thread here on iBoats. Thanks to whoever that was. I can't remember ;)

Question about the bilge. Can I fill and fair the bottom of the bilge with epoxy then lay glass over that? I want to get down 2 layers of biax and a layer of cloth but it's not flat and smooth. I did sand a fair bit but figured I could mix up some PB and smooth it out, let it cure then go back and do my cloth layups. Any thoughts?

Oh and here are where my rollers are sitting at the back.

Look ok? Should I adjust? This trailer didn't come with the boat and I have never set one up before so I did the best I could.

Thanks all! I will be back again shortly as I have found some energy to get little things done after supper at night. Tomorrow I hope to work on the bilge then start to make my templates for the rear seating :)

Mounts are good and secure. Did a little sanding tonight a layed down a skim coat of pb in the bilge. Will give it a quick sand tomorrow and hope to lay a couple layers of cloth. Then onto patterns and cutting some plywood for the seating in the back. Also I started to take apart the dog house. The pad on the top is soaking wet and plywood is soft. I think that will be my first attempt at sewing with my 15-91 :). Got all the heat insulation inside the doghouse. Anyone know where I can buy new stuff from? What’s it called?
