I would like some advice on some different carb options. I am putting a chev 350 in my 24ft and need to know a good crb to put in. I have an edelbrock performer intake. The carb is a AHolley 4bbl double pumper that I believe came off of a truck. Not marine. And way too much of a gas hog. Have been looking at the Edelbrock 1409 on ebay. What is the difference between a Carter AFB and Edelbrock? How is a 2bbl Mercarbfor the 350? What would happen if use a Rochester 2bbl that was for my 165hp L6? I have 3 of those. Could they be rebuilt/rejetted for the 350?What about Rochester 4bbl? Or a marine Holley? Any help would be appreciated.

edelbrock and carter afb are the same thing ,merc calls them a webber.2bbl off a 6 cyl is to small, my personal preference is the rochester q-jet,I have run them sucessfuly for years. dispite what some naysayers here will tell you an automotive q-jet with no external venting can be safely converted to marine specs.this is not a job for a backyard mechanic.you mustknow what you are doing

According to Holley, you would have to start by decreasing the tolerances between the throttle shafts and the carburetor base.
Marine applications are tighter than non marine.
Install J tubes on top of the float bowls.
I don't remember the rest.

Ayuh,... I've got the Merc/ Weber/ AFB carb on my barge,... I like it, easy to Tune....

The Edlebrocks are the Same carbs,+ are pretty Cheap,... Boat parts wise anyways...
Alota guys on the forum report them playing quite nicely, right out of the box....

Re: carburetors for chevy 350

ok what I did was, ream out the base plate and install bronse bushings to eliminate all play in the throttle shafts, plug all vacume ports exept pcv, this was done with set screws or lead plugs, brass float, volvo spark arrestor to provide a port for the fuel pump vent line. I used a pcv to help with condensation, very humid around here, breather went to spark arrestor as usual , painted with black engine enamal, specs were copied from 350 magnum #17080562
primary jets 69
primarymetering rods 35
secondary metering rods ch
secondary rod hanger g
I have run this set up for 6 years with no problems

The best choice for a backyard mechanic is an Edelbrock Marine 600. The price is right from Summit Racing, they are tuned very well for a 350 right out of the box, require very little maintenance and easy to fine tune should you decide to sway from stock. Im a hot rodder and my personal prefference is a Holley 600 Dble Pumper but for a car! Not on a boat. Holleys are very tunable if you know what your doing but take a lot of parts and time. Another thing to think about is your manifold type. Most Holleys and all Edelbrock/ Webbers are square bore meaning all 4 holes are the same (Roughly) bore size, spead bore Q Jets have smaller primaries and large secondaries, the fwd bolts are closer together than the rear. most stock Mercruiser manifolds are set up for only one pattern, my 85 5.7 was a Q Jet, my 97 has a square bore. Changing manifolds is not such a big deal, If your fresh water ONLY and raw water cooled, or use a heat exchanger you can use a cheapie aluminum. If you are raw water in the salt you need to use a more expensive marine type (cast iron or bronze inserts) to keep from corroding it away. Sorry its such a long response but there are lots of options just depends on how deep you want to get into it and how much time you want to put into tuning it.

In case of Edelbrock, the marine carbs dont have the plug for ignition timing AND there are rust protected parts like shafts, leavers, screws etc.

With best regards

for a little over 300 bucks you can't beat a new edelbrock. the jets and set-up will probably be right on as it comes. Not sure I would buy a used one... kind of a crap shoot. never know what some moron did in terms of personal sectrets to make it better... for the cost of a new one, might be worth redicing the gamble... Just my two cents

that would be model 1409, 600 cfm as mentioned above...

For what it is worth, I love the Edlebrock line of products. Having said that, you need to be aware that the Peformer intake is a spread bore pattern and the 1409 is a square bore carb. There will PROBABLY be enough "meat" to use the carb with no adapter, but it would be a wise thing to check if you go that route.
