can anyone give me any tips, tricks on how to remove the carpet on the deck, I do have two soft spots and I will be attempting to fix it this fall. the carpet seems to be glued to the floor. Is there a product you put on the carpet to remove the glue or do you just pull it off and try to scrape off what is left????

I can only speak for myself but I don't know of anything you can put on the carpet. Usually it's just rip and tear and sand off the glue residue. Scrape off what you can and use a machine for the rest.

Although I have never tried it, a wire wheel on a grinder is supposed to work.

Hey, a bench grinder to the floor, that would be nice to watch. j/k

My cabin had carpet from top to bottom, throughout the cabin (yes the head area too). When all hardware, and furniture was out, (as stated above), I grabed a hold of a corner and ripped away. What was behind the carpets was desinigrated foam flying everywhere (I'll use a respirator next time), and sprayed glue.

Removing the glue is not an easy task. I tried scrubing it off with soap and water with little results (not better than removing with my finger tips when dry). Next I tried paint thiner, This seemed to work except alot of elbow grease was needed. After hours of sweating in the Florida sun, I whipped out the pressure cleaner yesterday. Removed the about 80% of the glue, was much faster, cleaned 20+ build up of goo/mold/dirt, easier on the lungs, and cooled me off.

I'll post before and after pictures on my thread (restoring wellcraft....) by the end of next week.

Good luck!!!

Sorry, there is no easy way to remove old carpet glue. You can scrape, you can sand, but make no mistake, it's a royal pain in the arse. When I did my cuddy I just scraped as much as I could, cleaned up the old stuff and spread the new glue down. The level of removal I guess depends on how intense of of a restoration you're going to do.

Where in my post did I say anything about a bench grinder?

Bruceb58,

Relax.....Just having a little fun while restoring boats. Hence the "j/k" (just kidding).

Anyhow, should all the glue be removed in areas that will be glassed? Will leaving some glue degrade the integrety of the glass? There are areas that I will not replace with carpet ( floor, head area, galley area ) due to the increase in moisture in those areas. Those areas will be glassed smooth and then painted.
