Re: Cavatation plate broken, how bad???

I had mine welded for $100 at a local weld shop. You do need to take it off and make sure they know not to overheat it and cause other damage.
I had 2 different boats with the same outdrive that I tried a hydrofoil on. The first boat, an 18 foot bowrider with a 3.0 Mercruiser it helped with hole shot and planing. The second boat was a 21 foot cuddy with a 5.7 L Mercruiser and although this helped with hole shot and planing it was terrible when turning. It felt as if someone was sticking their foot out in to the water and it grabbing. I removed it. So some boats and motors it may help and some may not. A 4 blade prop was the answer for that boat and I use a 4 blade on my current 2 boats.

Cool, thanks for the opinion.

Right now. Its a 115 Johnson 1980 model year. Its on a 16 or 17' trihull, its got a stainless 15x17 3 blade prop. I GPS'ed it at 38mph a couple days ago. I'd like to try the foil and see if it helps.

Bob's Machine Shop makes one that is smaller, which I think would be better.
They call it a True Tracker stabilizer plate.

I would get it repaired. Don't like the whale tails.
Just my 2 cents though.

BTW, that's anti-ventilation, not cavitation.

Just dropped it off this morning to get welded up. $60 should be done today.

I'm anal - I'd grind it an paint it :)

I know, I normally would too, but nothing can be too good for this boat!! I only just paid $400 for it. She's the ugly duckling!! Maybe one day, I'll restore the boat and paint everything up nicely.
