Re: chevy vs. dodge

Geez, you Ford guys need to take a pill. I swear the guy is asking the question of an '06 Chevy or an '07 Dodge. Nowhere in that question do I see anything about Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Isuzu, Sterling, Honda, Freightliner or any other manufacturer.

So getting back to the original question, I wold go with the '07 Dodge because a) one year newer, and b) fewer miles. Keep in mind that either truck will do the job.

BTW: I drive an '06 Chevy 1 ton diesel. I gave Ford a very hard look, but it fell short. Never considered the Dodge in my decision.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

Agreed, as you can see below I own a ford truck, and my previous two trucks where f150's. They aren't speed demons, I'll never win a race unloaded with a GM, but then, even with my boat I barely notice it there and pulling it out of the water is effortless. That all said, the OP NEVER listed the Ford, and he is obviously looking at two used trucks. Fortunately at work we have both Dodge and GM trucks....thus I own a Ford...hehe...

The dodge, it's got great towing power, however the factory shocks were crap and gave out very early on. Also we blew out the rear end twice, the second time because the mechanic used the wrong type of gear oil, very very expensive synthetic lube is required for most chryslers. The tranny is now acting up a bit. All that said, it has never left us stranded on the side of the road...we have always been able to limp it home. Of note also, if you are over 6' tall, this is the truck to buy. You won't have any comfort issues. This rides like a truck...because it is a truck. This truck is also HORRIBLE on gas, and has a small gas tank (approx. 80L) which means you spend a lot of time at the pumps...typical of chrysler.

The GM's, I refer to them as tin can death traps for midgets. The good, the engines are indestructable! Very very very few engine problems with these trucks. For the weight we carry they are also good on fuel, the best of the big three trucks in my opinion. The seating is meant for midgets only, I am 6' tall and have a 36" inseam. My right foot has to be placed under the brake pedal so my knee doesn't hit the steering wheel...neither safe situations. The electrical systems are just jam packed with gremlins. Everything from ABS failures at highways speeds, faulty lights that just die one you, windshield wipers that turn on all by their lonesomes, Cruise control that randomly speeds up or slows down, transmission solenoid failures...you name it. The front ends are horrible on these things. Super vague and slushy, right off the lot. Like Ford though, ball joints are almost a maintenance item, although the Fords and Dodges have far superior handling and control (less frame flex likely). Also, as was mentioned, the bodies hold up much better in harsh conditions. Up here, our vehicles pretty much take a salt bath all winter. If you go Ford or Dodge, particularly if used, be sure they are rust proofed from new, as this does make a big difference.

I've logged over 2million miles in the last 15 years as a tech in all brands of truck. To be honest, even the new fords can't beat the old GM's of the early 90's late 80's. Back when GM knew how to build a truck. Since about the mid 90's their vehicles have just degraded like a compost pile. I've almost died more then once in a GM truck due to some type of failure or other.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

My $0.02:

Ford F-150 - Great trucks that seem to withstand the work that you put them through and do it in comfort. Good all around option. And as stated, they didn't hold out their money grubbing hands for my tax dollars. My next truck will no doubt be a Ford. If Ford hurry's up and puts a different diesel in their trucks ( I HATE the new and 6.0 powerstroke), it will be a Super Duty.

Chevy - A lot of people love Chevy's. They have good engines and transmissions. However, I've never been in one that has a good many miles on it that every single little thing in the interior squeaked or rattled. All of the trucks have a ton of plastic in them now, but the plastic that Chevy uses seems to be excessively cheap. This has always bugged me about them.

Dodge - Generally no frills truck that will get the job done. Powerful engines with ok transmissions behind them. As long as you take care of the transmission though, you shouldn't have any problems. I had one with over 250,000 miles on it and still worked like new. The transmission was fully serviced every 25,000 miles though. Also, Dodge's fuel mileage sucks compared to the other two, unless you are talking diesel. The Cummins is IMO the best diesel engine available in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. My 04 Cummins has been the best vehicle that I've ever had.

If I had to choose between the trucks you listed, I would choose the 07 Dodge with the Hemi. Just be prepared to shell out some money for gas. I had one for a while and got about 14 mpg hwy, and 8-9 or so while towing. Also be careful if it has the cloth interior. The cloth that Dodge used in those model trucks was horrible. It you got even just water on them, they stained like you spilled oil on them.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

I had an 2006 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 hemi. I loved the truck but I had nothing but trouble with the transmission. After taking it to the dealer for the 4th time for tranny repair, I decided to trade it in and got an 2007 GMC Z71 quad. This GMC was a great truck. Never had any problems with it other than the costly front end parts I had to replace. Pitman arm, idler arm, rack and pinion assembly. All within less than 100k on the truck. The truck towed great, gas milage was horrible 16mph and way less MPG when towing. Ok power 285 HP I belive.

I recently traded the GMC in for a 2009 Dodge QuadCab Hemi. Sweet truck! 390 HP, 20-23mpg highway/ 11-16MPG towing. This sucker pulls hills while towing my 18.5ft Larson with ease.

You can get a new Dodge with a lifetime powertrain warranty for real cheap. Got mine for 27k. So far I've been real happy with my Dodge.

I also have other Chevys and Fords as well as a KIA Rio. I lean more towards American though...Ford Chevy Dodge....I like them all. I've owned Nissan and Toyota....decent vehicles but, I was never really impressed with the insurance rates on imports.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

I was always a chevy guy but I now have a Ford and love it I would buy another Ford or chevy in a heartbeat.
However I have friends that have nothing but problems with their Dodges.
Mainly transmission and brake problems.
I have talked to a few Snow removal contractors and they tell me the newer dodge transmissions are junk so they buy a new dodge and run it until the trans goes and then throw in one of the old school transmissions

Re: chevy vs. dodge

wow what did i get started here. living here in upstate ny i travel alot of hills (mountains) to get to the fingr lakes. My 01 gmc now does the job for me but at 115,000 miles going up these hills at 4000 rpm doing 25mph i'm afraid i'm going to kill this truck. That is why i was leaning towards the dodge. the hemi has alot more power and it is cheaper

I would find out if this dodge your looking at still has the original trans in it or if has been replaced.
If the trans is original I would keep looking.

I would have loved to have a Durango with the Hemi but just coudn't stomach the interior on the Dodge trucks. I really tried but the GM's were just nicer. The Dodge interiors were simply utilitarian even at the top trim level but love the look of the exterior. I am new to trucks so went in totally unbiased.

I will say in response to the contractor and work truck statement. I guess this is a product of where you live but I see FAR more Ford work trucks than Dodge or Chevy. Easily 2:1 in favor of Fords. Not sure of the reason, but seems to be the case around me.

As with most things, it all depends on the previous maintenance. Down here in the south, most of the work trucks that you see are Dodges with the Cummins being used as farm trucks. I personally know of one such farmer who has a fleet of 20 trucks. Once they hit 300,000 miles, he sells them and buys a new one. He usually retires 5-6 year. He services the auto transmissions every 20,000 miles. He has only had to replace one full transmission since he has been using them (since the late 90's that I know of). These trucks are not babied either. Most are loaded with huge water tanks or fuel tanks and work all day, every day.

Just an example that the Dodge transmissions aren't as crappy as the bad rep they have gotten seems to imply. I have personally driven two half ton Dodge trucks to over 250,000 miles without spending a dime on the transmissions besides maintenance.

Are they the best transmissions? No.

Are they horrible transmissions that will crap out on you all the time? Absolutely not, as long as you service them regularly.

Here is my opinion:
Ford (even though it wasnt asked)= POS
Dodge = Ugly POS
GMC = What other trucks want to be when they grow up.

I?m kidding, these things are always about personal choice.
If it was me the Dodge wouldn?t even be an option. I do actually hold the Dodge at the bottom of the barrel, even if you throw imports in the equation.

Ivaz, finally someone who knows what's up! Haha
But seriously, get a Chev!
My dad just got one of the new '09's with the 6.2 gas engine and they are like 400+ hp out of the box, it's nuts to drive. Just touch the gas and you are burning out. Works good for pullin' the dodges out and looks good driving past the broke down fords :p
I doubt you would even feel a 5000lb boat behind one!

Re: chevy vs. dodge

im a ford guy but if i had to choose between the to you stated it really depends on a few variables and what you want out of it. the dodge with a hemi pull well but tend to get poor mileage the chevy 5.3 arn't a bad motor but don't seem to handle loads as well. the auto shop i work at has a shop truck 2wd chevy 1500 with a 5.3 its got 345,000 miles on it now and is still running, but it gets good maintance. hemis i donno how long they really last yet. the dodge trannys are better than they were but still have issues when mileage get up there but good maintance goes a long way with trannys too i like the interior of the chevys better and i must say they make some very comfy seats. but like i said im a ford guy thats happy with manual windows and a rubber floor i can clean with a water hose lol

Re: chevy vs. dodge

The "last" DODGE that I owned was a 1996 1/2 ton truck. I really liked the truck, BUT, absolutely hated the transmission problems !!!!!! AND, the gas mileage was poor !! BUT, I knew that would be the case when I bought it. It had the 360 in it.

I laugh at the DODGE commercials where the offer the longer lasting transmissions.

That said, with the original posters question, in mind, it'd be a Chevy.

BUT, I drive FORDs exclusively. I just had a brain fart when I bought the DODGE. It WON'T happen again.

I would have suggested Isuzu, as i drive an Isuzu suv and LOVE it, but their most common truck, the p'up, had a 4cyl and they stopped production of it many moons ago.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

I own a 2006 Dodge Ram, Quad cab, Big Horn edition, with the 5.7L Hemi and 20's. Some notes:

1) The dodge you listed has has 23,000 on it - is it still under warranty? Can you include an extended warranty into the purchase price?

2) My Dodge tows like a mutha - obviously the hemi helps but also it came with good gearing via the towing package. Verify yours has it.

3) A simple fact is a transmission in a Dodge/Chrysler suck. Period. If you do get the dodge, change the fluid & filter every 25,000 miles.

4) Your Dodge may have MDS - multi displacement system. It shuts down a few cyclinders to save you gas. I have gotten low 20's (doing 55 to 60mph) with it. Not towing of course, but I am assuming you will be driving this without a boat. Otherwise I average about 17 doing 70mpg (no towing). I don't bother to look while I am towing. :D

5) Whats the KBB/NADA guide value on the 06 GMC versus the 07 Dodge? Also go back a few years on each model and compare.

6) Everyone else is right - Chevy's drive like luxury cars, Ford's are build like a Tank and Dodge is a utlitarian type truck. I have owned all Ford's before, but I bought my current Dodge (had 30k miles on it) for a measly $19k back in Sept 2008 - right when the high gas prices were happening and people were abandoning gas guzzlers. New, it was $45K - basically the dealer went Godfather on me (made me a deal I couldn't refuse). And it is a GORGEOUS truck.

And finally - its a vehicle. We all get screwed on them eventually!
