Re: Choose, Evinrude Etc 25Hp Or Yamaha 4-Stroke 25HP

It depends on a lot of factors.

Local dealer support, weight, personal preference and general maintenance expectations.

The E-tec is generally lighter in weight
Yamaha - 203 lbs (20" shaft)
E-Tec - 150-180 lbs (20" depending on options)

The Yamaha typically has more dealer support.

The Yamaha would typically require more maintenance (oil changes etc.)

Standard warranties are both 3 years. Evinrude has been offering 5 year warranties at certain times recently.

The E-Tec will require oil to be added to a tank and this oil adds to the overall operation cost. Although, when set by the dealer to take advantage of a special Evinrude specific oil (XD-100) the consumption goes way down.

The E-Tec will likely give a bit more punch out of the hole. Top end will be similar with either.

Fuel consumption should be similar with either. Depending on the boat, prop and useage, one may have an advantage over the other, however, it is not always possible to determine ahead of time if there is a clear advantage.

Both motors are relatively quiet. The E-Tec may have a slightly higher pitch noise at speed that could be percieved as being louder.

Both engines should be equally reliable as both technologies and brands have developed strong reputations over a couple of generations of development.

So with that, it is really up to each individual to decide what motor/technology works best for them.

Which Outboard to get?

Which Outboard to get?

I am in the process of looking into getting a outboard for my 14' Crestliner Sportman's. Here are my choices that I am pondering:

1) Get new Evinrude Etec will cost me 1900.00 after selling my current motor

2) Get Used 2008 2 Stroke Yamaha, less then one hour of use.(will cost me 1300.00 after selling my current motor)

Can't go wrong with either of those, but I think for six more bills I'd go with the new Etec.

That is what I am thinking also. I don't know what headaches the 2008 Yamaha will cause me.

Probably none, but brand new's hard to beat for that price difference, and I've never heard anything but rave reviews about those Etecs. No flies on Yammy though.

For a small motor like that, why not pick up cheaper used motor. Those 25HP johnnys and Mercs last forever. e-TEC has an advntage on fuel economy and emissions, over a carb motor. however, on a small motor like that, the difference in fuel economy is very small in comparison to the price difference. Are you required to have an e-TEC for the emissions?

Also, a carb motor is much simpler to maintain. You can also an old four cycle motor, of about the same HP.

To me the Etec no question. No breakin period,No service required for 3 years or 300 hours.Available tilt and trim,Special trolling setting.Meets all "CARB"requirements. Not as light as a typical carbed 2 stroke but lighter than most 4 strokes.

25 Etec on a 280lb alumacraft 16ft with 2 men 6 gal fuel and gear. 31.6 mph,10.2 mpg,16.8 mpg at 21.5 mph.
As I understand it no breakin period,no service for 3 years or 300 hours.

Being you have a 14' boat, I'd go with the lightest motor, the Etec in this case.
I run a Grumman SS14, rated at a max of 14hp, both the Etec and Yamaha 4 stroke are far too heavy in my opinion for the transom.
If I were to go with a newer motor, I'd be forced to step down in weight to maintain a safe freeboard height.

I had tried both the 20hp and 25 hp Yamaha motors, the 25 was just too heavy. The 20hp was just too slow. I ended up with a clean used 25hp Evinrude 2 stroke. I mix my fuel but the fact that the motor is so much lighter, I get far better performance than if I had hung the newer 25hp motor. I had looked into a 25 Etec but the local dealer had none in stock and couldn't give me a date when they would appear.

I am leaning towards the 2 stroke Yamaha. I go back and fourth. OCD is kicking in full bore!

I have taken in countless motors on trade and in 99% of the cases, there was something that needed attention.

Is the Yamaha from a relative, so you can you verify the motors hours. Many people feel that since they "hardly used it" winterizing is not important. Thermostats can stick. They may have started it out of the water - who knows.

In your case the carb may have some crud and the water pump should be changed out as normal new ownership maintenance. If you can do the work and have time to do it, then saving the $600 dollar fee might be a necessity.

In the marine world, $200 bucks a season, zippo maintenance, and having a hand in every moment of your "Baby" is short money.

Last year I bought a used 15hp Mercury 4 stroke, "Slightly Used".
I was actually at the dealer getting parts when the original owner took it home. It was the last of the 2007 models he had left. I told the dealer that if he came across another, call me.
Less than two weeks later, the dealer calls and says he's got a new motor that was returned. The customer claimed it was too hard to start being manual start only. It was the same guy that I watched carry out that motor two weeks prior. The dealer made me a killer deal, cash and carry, the motor had some scrapes on one side where the idiot just laid it in the bed of his truck and let it slide around. After hanging it on my boat, I soon realized that the prop was spun, and it wouldn't stay running. A call to the dealer got me a new prop, a carb kit, water pump kit, and a set of new plugs, plus they gave me the decal kit they owed me. It runs fine now, but the carb was full of crap, the water pump was full of mud and sand, and the idiot had already changed the plugs in it to a pair of plugs labeled Briggs Stratton.
Why on earth anyone would do that to a motor that was less than two weeks old I have no clue, or why the dealer took it back. I have no idea what went on there though.

I still got a deal, I couldn't buy that motor for twice what I have in it, and although I had to do some work on it, the above post is dead on, if you or someone you know and witnessed run it had that motor, its a gamble and pay for it accordingly.

The bottom line is that people do stupid things, especially when it comes to boats and outboards. I once went to look at a used motor, drove about 20 minutes to see it. I called the guy when I got close to his place. When I got there, he had it running, with no water at all. I got out of the truck, I asked the guy why on earth would he run it with no water? His reply was that it don't need water, it's a 4 stroke. I shook my head and just left, there was no telling what that motor had been through.
It was less than 6 months old and was listed on CL as a new outboard, used only three times. I guess the 10 minutes or so running with no water on the fence didn't count. I've got a neighbor that flushes his 115 Optimax in an ice chest full of water every time he comes back from fishing. He lets it run for 15 minutes or so, there's no where near enough water to reach the water pump and there's no telling him any different. To top it off, the motor has a water port on the side where you can hook a hose up to. He won't use it.
He can't figure why he goes through so many water pump impellers, he blames it on all the mud at the dock. He hates the motor because of that and you can't tell him anything.
Keep in mind that most people don't sell a motor unless something is wrong. I rarely see a used motor that doesn't need something.

Re: Choose, Evinrude Etc 25Hp Or Yamaha 4-Stroke 25HP

I'm not trying to be a jerk but not all people sell things that have problems. The last statement is very untrue, that people sell used motors because there is something wrong with them. You must remember alot of people are hurting for money right now and they sell their toys cheap. Also i do agree there are a ton of stupid people that run there outboards with no water.I buy and sell for a living and the motors i pick up have had some small stuff like wear and tear stuff, normal stuff that goes wrong but most motors are bulletproof unless you just flat out don't take care of them. All they really need to do is check the fluids, grease the fittings, and run fresh water through it for a few minutes.

People are very lazy these days and i can't figure out why. When i buy a motor i check the compression, fluids, and make sure it pumps good water.I have sold over 100 outboards and have never had one person call me back and say they had problems. The 2stroke is pretty basic to care for and the 4stroke is to but a hair bit different.I also find most people are selling there stuff because it's hard times now.I have picked up some crazy deals as a result of it.It takes alot of abuse to hurt an outboard but you are right in some cases, people do sometimes have something to hide, thats why always check the compression as to me that is the most important thing on any motor.By the way the etec 25 is an outstanding motor and well worth the money. The yamaha is way to heavy.Good luck.
