clothes washer smoking ughhhh

was a full load, but maybe to much weight w Levis, etc? Smoke alarms went off, I unplugged - thinking let cool down, try empty load and monitor? Maybe belts smoking? Only 7-8 yrs old and a stacked, heavy duty machine

Loose belts would be heard long before they smoke. Check for lint, especially the vent/hose.

EDIT - I was thinking dryer, not washer. So only the loose belts squealing comment applies. Have you lost any socks lately? Maybe plugging/jamming the pump.

That will happen if you let your washer hang out with the wrong crowds...... smoking, drinking and stating up to all hours!!!

Is it direct drive or does it even have a belt. Sounds like the motor is smoked either way if the smoke alarm went off. Now you could have lost a bearing that stopped the drum from turning which will smoke a motor.

You could risk starting it again with a partial load....... the key word is risk...... if it starts and runs I would just do smaller loads in the future.

It may be on it's last legs

Most front loaders are direct drive....... keep an eye on it and do your laundry MORE often!!

All electrical and electronic devices run on smoke. If the smoke gets out they don't work anymore. Sounds like you let only some of the smoke out, but damage is almost certain. Get a tech to look at it.

Must be contagious as mine done the same thing 2 days ago. Mine was definitely electrical. If I had to guess I would suspect the motor relay, sometimes called a potential relay. It is used on the motor to supply current to the motor start windings and then switch over to the run windings after motor gets going. If it fails to switch over the motor will overheat until the thermal overload that is built into the motor trips and then when the motor cools back down it will try to restart. . Even though the motor gets hot it will usually survive this on/off cycling (for awhile) If it does it again I would replace the motor relay.

You can put more smoke back into the device, but that requires a Smoke Packer, which is a very expensive piece of machinery.
Some have tried using an old Force outboard and Seafoam to generate the smoke, and an air compressor to inject the smoke thru the transistor ports.

Don't the new front loaders have Flux Capacitors? They can generate their own smoke.

Ha, just throw in a couple chickens and maybe a ham and you will get your clothes washed and smoke some food for supper too... Multi-tasking at its finest... You just have to look at the positive side of things...

Don't the new front loaders have Flux Capacitors? They can generate their own smoke.

Not in California. Back in '91 the legislature passed a sweeping resolution banning anything that required jigowatts to operate. Apparently parts were becoming scarce due to the limited number of DeLoreans available in the secondary market. It was quite the scandal.

Oh yes... I recall those. They're the ones that run on the "Mr. Fusion" equipped reactors...
