Re: Concealed gun question
I figured I'd chime in as well. I'm of the 3rd category as well. I originally obtained my OH CCW permit and only carried for when I snowplowed in the winter. The company I contracted for would send me to accounts everywhere, some down in the flats, up in Cleveland, and other unsavory places, mostly during the dead of night.
My first carry weapon was a Sig229 that I carried on my belt, since I only carried at the time in winter the sidearm was easy to conceal under a winter jacket.
Since those first years of carrying, I've felt more and more that you really can't be to prepared. I have since purchased a different ccw gun, and carry most anytime now. My family, is very aware I carry, as well as most of my CLOSE friends are aware. I'm often the guy they come alert when something raises the hair on their neck. Please don't mistake that, I don't go looking for any trouble, and avoid confrontations at every possible chance, but they feel comfortable with me, my demeanor, and my actions while carrying. Thats a big part of it too. Carrying I believe is a responsibility that shouldn't be taken lightly. You should act responsible, cause you are, and don't draw attention to your self by show-and-tell. God forbid something ever happens, i don't want to hint to anyone (read: potential bad guy) that i have it.
Most importantly, If there's a place I feel I can't go safely without taking my sidearm, I DON'T GO!
I don't ever want to use my sidearm, but that sad fact of the matter is this world can be unpredictable, and there are many out there that simply don't value life. I want as much chance to go home to my family as the next guy. There's a saying that was passed onto me from one of my instructors, I now pass this along to my classes when I teach self defense:
I'd rather be judged by 12, than carried by 6.
