i have a 1993 javelin with a 1993 johnson 175 faststrike my uncle owned the boat before me and we used to always go fishing in it etc so i not only bought the boat for great fishing but for the memories with my uncle its a great boat but i remember when he had it the oil injection quit working so we just unhooked it and started premixing and i believe we did the 100:1 ratio which is 13oz of oil to 10 gallons of gas so when i bought the boat i did this and it runs great it has no problems except that when my uncle drove the boat we usually went 60-70mph and all i can get it to do is 50-52 non gps note to that i am considerably bigger than my late uncle. ive also been told that all outboards take a 50:1 ration which i believe is 26 oz of oil to 10 gallons of gas according to my quicksilver bottle which is the oil i use... any input is greatly appreciated thank in advance...

You are not oiling that engine properly at 100 to 1. That is half the oil that engine needs to run reliably. If you follow the mixing ratios on most marine oil bottles, you will get it correct at 50 to 1. Your 26 oz of oil in 10 gallons of fuel is on target. I'd probably recheck the compression on all 6 cylinders to make sure the powerhead is not damaged.

If you "over" oil you might notice more smoke. If you "under" oil you might notice a variety of symptoms of a broken engine.

More smoke and fouled plugs seems far better than a total rebuild, IMHO

50::1 ratio will not foul plugs in a properly tuned engine. Heck, we used to run 24::1 in a motor with points/magneto ignition with nary a fouled plug.

Over oiling runs the "risk" of fouling plugs and under oiling "risks" damage to the engine. 50:1 is the ideal mixture but If I had to choose other than 50:1 I would definitely lean towards too much oil

Do a compression test and post the results.

I'm not thinking the correct oil mixture is going to get you back to the kind of speed you report but staying out of the service bay is most important at this point. I'm having a difficult time with the speed story. You said you were with your late uncle back then and the boat would do 60-70 but now you're alone and have gotten bigger (me too by the way) but have lost 20 mph. I'm guessing a Javelin with a 175 properly tuned should do a might better than 52 unless your a real Hoss. I mean that friendly 'cause my dad could sink most bass boats in this state.

Re: confused on oil mix ratio need help

There were certain years, mostly in the late '80's, where OMC designed motors to run on 100:1, but soon realized that was not good and ended up recalling. These motors could have been built in the '90's as well. Anything that says 100:1, ignore it. No motor should be run on anything less than 50:1. Actually, a motor that spends a lot of time at WOT, would be good to run at 32:1 and that includes newer motors as well. A little more oil will only prolong the life of your motor. It's a lot of low RPM's for trolling, that typically fouls out plugs and this is where leaner mixes are safer.

You could run that motor at 100:1 if you use a full synthetic oil like XD100. At 50:1 (quart of oil to 12 gal fuel) you can use any TCWIII rated oil but the partial synthetic like XD50 is most popular. Even using XD50 at 24:1 (double oil) you won't foul the plugs as long as you use the correct Champion plug. Always use fresh 87 octane fuel.

I would never run anything 100:1, synthetic, or otherwise. Oil is the cheapest thing you can put in an engine. :D
