Re: Craigslist Inflation?

There is a guy on the KC site that has been listing his rotted out 20ft bowrider for two years now. He started last year at $3000 and dropped it to $2700 this past winter but has bumped it back up to $3000. He did have a pic of the stern and the drive is sunk several inches in the ground. It has a rotted tarp hanging off the back and he has no picks of the interior but he says the seats are rough but the boat is serviceable now. He relists this thing every day, sometimes twice a day. Its always getting flagged.

I can't understand why people won't take a minute and clean up what they're trying to sell!?!
If you wash the grime off, remove the rotted tarp, and kick out the baby squirrels, they might actually get someone to come look at it! The one person who was on the fence about the price might just be persuaded to go take a look if the pics are appealing. Then it's just a matter of negotiating a price!

Re: Craigslist Inflation?

If I do find a boat I am really interested in I pull up the NADA and Bucs market value pages and give it to the seller and ask them to tell me why thier boat is worth so much more than all the boats like it. Doesn't always work but very often it does. Some times people just need a dose of reality. (Some folks want nothing to do with reality and their boat sets and sets.)

Sorry but in many places NADA is 100% useless. I know here that NADA for boats, cars, and motorcycles is so low that it is funny. I just sold a truck and boat for 50% more than nada.

I had a person show up with NADA value printed off, he showed it to me(it was $1,500 less than my asking price). I laughed and told him to go buy the truck from NADA then, there price was much better than mine.

3 hours later I had my full asking price in cash from a different person.

But it goes both ways sometimes NADA is way over price. Something is worth what someone is willing to pay.

I pay the most attention to newer, (2002-2007) 20 foot and under bowriders and midsized SUV's on CL. The spring uptick in prices is here but they are still pretty low IMO. I see lots of boat deals I would love to buy that weren't around a couple years back meaning more premium brand boats and larger engines and MPI that I sought but never found. On the midsized SUV's there is a huge flood of them and they are much cheaper than last June when I bought my midsized, truck frame suv. I guess my limited ovservations are in contrast to yours. As for NADA boat pricing, it is unrealistically low and those are retail prices to boot.

IMHO one of the problems with CL is that its completely free so people run ad after ad (why not, its free) hoping to find a rube.

On the plus side, time is on the buyers side and a good deal always comes along.

NADA values boats way too low. I've seen an ad on craigslist here where one guy says he will pay NADA value for any boat less than 10 years old. Heck, I would too. You could make a nice profit buying boats at NADA value and reselling them for what they're really worth.

Re: Craigslist Inflation?

If I see something that interests me on Craigslist, I'll just offer what I think it's worth.
Selling on Craigslist in itself is a pain in the ***. People say they are gonna show up and never do. People don't speak english when they call. It drives me nuts. Enjoy it while it's free...

The funny thing about it is when you actually show up with cash in hand for a major purchase, the sellers are stunned on so many levels. If you think selling something is difficult try giving something away. That is even funnier. I did it once and never again.

I put up a couple of beds on Craigslist for free and I was stunned at the amount of people that wanted me to deliver them for free too. I bet I had seven people call that wanted free delivery.

I have probably done $40000+ between buying and selling on Craigslist. It's a great place if you have the patience for it.

In Northern Minnesota the market seems to be flooded with boats. I just bought my first one, but my friend who was helping me was saying that there are some amazing deals out there right now. I was looking for fishing/fun boats but still I had several to choose from before I settled on mine.

I got a very clean '79 16' Ranger with a Johnson 70 HP, trailer, fish finder and trolling motor for less than $2k. I've had it out twice with no issues and a ton of fun!!

it is just the way things are...

the guy wanting that style boat has to find a guy in need of cash that is selling that kind of boat...

I was in the market for a boat and there were NONE like i wanted...

some people have SPECIFIC wants in the boat....10,000 fiberglass 23 footers doesnt help the guy wanting a 16 foot semi v fishing boat!!! even if they are 10cents on the dollar

Re: Craigslist Inflation?

I went through the same thing until i just purchased my boat off of cl. Going from dealers and through private partys, people were asking from 3K to 9K over the blue book price. I found a boat that was right at the blue book price. Wow some one who checked out what there boat was worth before trying to stick it to someone.

Re: Craigslist Inflation?

Noticed that while looking at tillers on there today. Most of the ones I was looking at were not too far off from brand new pricing. Some guy had a Montgomery Wards rear tine from 1970 for $450.

It seems outboards hit a wall and keep a certain price for many years.

Re: Craigslist Inflation?

I spent 2 months looking at boats on craigslist the prices people were asking was crazy! it took some time for me to find a cheap sea worthy boat. Also i learned P.O.S boats take very good pictures until your face to face. oh and a little tip if you put your boat up for sale HAVE THE PAPERWORK!!!. Three boats i looked at the owners had no idea where the title was. below is my craigslist buy i paid $1100 bucks for it. Runs great insides in good shape only had to buy a new prop and about 10 hours so far of buffing/polishing ill be done this weekend and post some before and after pics.

Re: Craigslist Inflation?

Price reduced from $3500 to $2500. What a deal. Nice bow.

I was looking at boats last weekend. I spent an hour waiting for a guy to start his boat that had been sitting for 2 years. Still not bad for the price, so I was considering it. Then he couldn't find the title. It blows my mind that people post a listing and then when you show up, they aren't prepared to sell.
The one I ended up buying I spent all afternoon with the seller while he de winterized, got the altenator mounted, got it started, and changed the trailer wheels. It still wasn't cleaned out and ready to sell, but I can understand since we had some bad weather. At least I got a decent price and since I spent all afternoon there, I got a good understanding of what I was in for.
