The largest temperature difference that I ever experienced was when I came home to Spokane, WA from Australia. It was 115 degrees in the Aussie outback and -10 in Spokane when I arrived 29 hours later. That 125 degree temp change just about froze my important parts off!

Nope, don't miss shoveling all that cold stuff at all. :p

Did you ever work around trucks that had the quick connects on the coolant system, you could take a hot truck and warmed up a cold truck by circulating the coolant, worked good till a hose popped off and antifreeze blew everywhere.
or even worse the tires were froze into 6 inches of ice/mud:eek:

Yep, pull into the woods with the pickup, hook the quick connects to the skidder, drink a cup of coffee, unhook and go to work.

I've been thinking of rigging a heat exchanger zone and quick connects to the wood boiler. I could just park next to the boiler shed, hook up the hoses. Then just flip a switch in the house ten minutes before departure.

As most of the load is domestic, I'd have to run safety freeze (propylene glycol) in the van so the system wouldn't get poisoned if the heat exchanger failed.

I have been thinking of a boiler for the last couple of years, neghbour has one but he"s starting to get pin holes in his boiler jacket, (do you ever check the PH balance like we do in the diesel engines to avoid pinholes in the sleeves?) anyways would be nice to heat the shop and house, to late for the inslab but could always dig up those old cast iron rads from the schools they"ve pulled down.

I have been thinking of a boiler for the last couple of years, neighbour has one but he"s starting to get pin holes in his boiler jacket, (do you ever check the PH balance like we do in the diesel engines to avoid pinholes in the sleeves?) anyways would be nice to heat the shop and house, to late for the in slab but could always dig up those old cast iron rads from the schools they"ve pulled down.

The "modern" outdoor boilers are open to the atmosphere, and they take in oxygen from the atmosphere which will corrode it and other iron parts in the system from the inside. There are testing systems and additives that can control this, but just like battery maintenance it has to be kept up religiously.

I use a pressurized boiler from the 1980's. They are not open to the outside, and you cannot use pex with them because pex derates to zero at 212 degrees, and will actually break all by itself at higher temperatures. It has to do with the cross linking characteristics. It's filled with a propylene glycol and water anti-freeze to about -15F, and a boiler water conditioner/anti-leak additive. It's pressurized to 10 lbs cold, and runs about 15 lbs hot. The overtemp emergency system gets excited if it gets to 240 degrees. It normally runs between 190 and 220 in extreme weather.

I have a 15 x 15 woodshed with a 15 x 8 boiler room attached. The cat gains access through the combustion air supply, or maybe the combustion air comes through the cat door. Anyway, everybody is happy.

I like a pressurized system. Once set up, maintenance is very low. The entire system, including the boiler, a couple hundred feet of line, and radiation, only holds thirty and a couple gallons of water. It would be pretty expensive to put propylene glycol into a system that holds a couple of hundred gallons of water.

There are quite a few of the old wood boilers still around. The dry back ones pretty much self destructed, but the wet back ones should be in good shape. Even if you find one that's been abused and needs a little welding, it would be worth it. There are some cast iron ones around, like Buderus, also.
Kewanee, Hurst, and others.

BTW, I anybody is thinking of installing a presurized system, I can help. I was the design engineer at WoodHeaters of Minnesota back during the Arab Oil Embargo. I supported about a hundred small dealers installing air and hydronic systems, including hybrid systems, multifuel systems, and campus systems. While there, I did the ASME engineering, control design, and manuals for one of the manufacturer's wood boilers.

I can agree with that, I was in N Texas years ago, went to be one night with it snowing outside and about 30 degrees, next AM it was -10 and the wind was blowing with snow everywhere, that dry cold was not as bad to me as what we have here. Our humidity makes it worse here just like it does the heat in the summer. I used to run service calls and remember one year I was out about 4 AM starting cold diesel trucks, it was 5 degrees and wind blowing like crazy, got in my truck to warm hands while batteries were charging and the guy on the radio had to say that the wind chill was -23, that made it worse, I already new it was cold and really did not need to know that.

About 8:30 this morning I remembered the main drawback with the outside boiler.

At 20 below, the wife kicked me out to go feed it.

When it gets back up to 30 degrees around here, we'll be suntanning.

Re: Dang it is cold, and getting colder

I guess with the threat of rain and temps in the low thirtys, we may just see some of the white stuff. It's happened twice in my 54 yrs here....'77 and '89.
On that morning in 1977 when we got about an inch, all the overpasses froze and there were about 200 wrecks all over the interstates and bridges that day. My Dad was working as the Safety director for the city and was pretty busy getting crews out. Problem was, we had no equipment to deal with it...

Here's a pic...

the bush river on the chesapeake bay is starting to freeze up. She has ice all along the backs, but the center is still ice free. It has to be real cold to freeze the bay up.

They say highs tommorow in kansas will be 15 below 0.

Re: Dang it is cold, and getting colder

Today, high around 40, wind chill most of the day has temps in the low 30's. For South GA in the sunshine, that is really cold. You can't even warm up in the sun. Not used to that around here...

Tonight, back into the low 20's with windchills in the teens and maybe single digits...

They say we get a warm spell to 52 tomorrow as a high, then back tot he high 30s. I don't think they have it right...
