Boat in the water today, didnt run great, so I put the spark gap tester on and proceeded to check spark strength, so im in waiste deep water and the tester flopped over, no big deal right? Well my buddy didnt see this and also didnt hear me say stop and when I grabbed the tester by the screw ZAAAP electrocuted the crapwaist outta me, in waist deep water   I let out a very loud shriek and took a min or two to shake it off, identified the dead coil and replaced. So as im wrapping this repair up I holler to my buddy to "crank er up!" He did motors running good, but for some reason, out of instinct I suppose, I pushed on the plug wire to ensure it was suffiently engaged to the plug, ZAAAP again! Twice in 15 mins... Second one really got me gon... Sheesh, I know ele cxtricity

Several years ago I got nailed on a Merc 150. They didn't name it "Thunderbolt Ignition" for nothing.

Just to clarify because I am somewhat of a snob. If you were "electrocuted" that means you died; what happend to you was you were "shocked".

Think "electrocution = execution"

Sounds like you didn't need to pull out the spark tester, you can just test it manually, like you did twice. ;)

That's how I test my mowers, but I'm sure the outboard has a lot more kick.

Gotta love those plug wire shocks! To make you feel better I'll tell mine, about a month ago I was replacing a bad flourescent light fixture. I "thought" I turned off the right breaker. The battery in my elecrical tester was dead so being smart I turned off the light switch. I went to another room to get a wire stripper, came back, turned the switch back on out of habit and proceeded to strip a hot wire.

Electronic ignitions put out in excess of 100K volts. A zap will hurt like the dickens.

Yup, I used to work on old snowmobiles (pre 1970's). An age old diagnostic for a rough running motor was - while running, pull a wire about 1/4" off the plug and force the ignition to jump a bigger gap. Sometimes as a coil would be crapping out, I'd hold the wire off the plug the entire ride home (we never went too far from home back then!). Inevitably, you'd get shocked quite a few times bouncing around in the field, but it was never really that bad. Fast forward a couple of years, I'm 16 and working on my first car. It's running rough, so I figure I'll try the same thing. After I picked myself up off the driveway, I did a little more research. Turns out the coils on the old snowmobiles would run somewhere around 10K volts, while cars with distributerless ignitions could push 120K volts!!

I just wish I could say that's the last time a spark plug wire got me

I've worked on many a hot 110 volt circuit... something you can do if you're careful. The deal is: if it bites me, I'm not allowed to whine about it. After all, it's not like I didn't know. Caveat: 220 volts can kill.

It wouldn't have been a big deal but not realizing I turned the switch back on.....I wasn't careful, the wire stripper became a projectile. It was funny in hindsight and the wife got a good laugh, so I had that going for me.

As Top Gear's James May says, "Dealing with electricity fills me with a sense of dread and, inevitably, with electricity itself."

Did something similar working on a dirtbike when I was a kid. I was looking for spark but the plug kept moving when I would kick it over. My solution - hold it with a pair of pliers.
