a happy wife is a happy you.
think of it as the price you had to pay for happiness.

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

Lots of interesting takes on this situation.
If you did it quietly of your own volition, without prodding and a bunch of hints....that's completely cool in my books....its your money.
However, when a person wants another person to buy them something this substantial for reasons you mentioned.....nope, I'm out.
If she wanted it that bad for those reasons, she probably should have just bought it herself and told her friends it was from you.
The external request for a gift is what sets this apart from someone buying a boat, car, truck, whatever for themselves within the comparison.
None of the guys asked their wives to buy them a boat, car, truck...which would have been met with a pretty blank stare and then a lot of laughing.:D
Good Luck on this one.

So basically it's a bribe? Give me what I want or I will not be happy? STUFF rarely makes one happy. Not for long, anyway.

Some woman are impressed by other woman's diamonds. Some widowed/divorced woman use diamonds as flash lights, that seem to attract a type of male we wouldn't have in the boat. Notice I said some :D

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

Well my wife is still wearing the 1 carat flawless in a 18K setting I bought her close to 25 years ago, while overseas, she said she would never consider "upgrading" as it was what she wanted then and it is what makes her happy now. A wedding ring is much more than a piece of jewelry, It is a commitment, a thought, an argument, a sadness and a joy, all the things that a successful marriage includes..

As my now deceased grandmother used to say, her wedding ring was a representation of her circle of life. The older I get, the more profound that statement has become.

I would never hesitate to purchase another piece of jewelry for her and have on many occasions, but the wedding ring is more than that..

This year will be our 20th anniversary. My wife never asked for an "up-graded" ring. Several years ago she just went out and bought it for herself. I love her and trust that she loves me. To each their own. What ever rocks your boat.

Not at all.

You enjoy your boat, your wife may or may not enjoy it, but that probably wouldn't stop her from letting you spend money on it. I don't see any utility in a ring, nor does my wife, but some women do and who are we to judge what they do with their hard earned dollars?

My wife doesn't enjoy fast cars or machine guns but she doesn't mind when I absolutely waste obscene amounts of money on either.

You're missing the point; It was HIS hard earned dollars that was requested to be spent by his wife in what sounds like an indirect "You don't love me as much as the next womans husband loves her unless you get me a bigger ring" kinda way.

People don't marry each other by placing frivolous things like boats, fast cars, or machine guns on each others hands. A specific ring given on the day of marriage signifies the bond between two people. The strength of that bond shouldn't be dictated by the material size and quality of the ring it's self, but rather the promise/oath made at the time of marriage, with the specific ring serving as visual proof of that promise.

If his wife just asked him to buy her a diamond ring just because she wants one (for another finger) thats one thing. In this case how ever, it sounds like his oath was placed in question until he ponied up for more expensive proof.

To the OP,
I bet some of these responses made by the other members and me are hard or agitating to read. We all know you love your wife, and I'd wager you'd do anything for her. Her request apparently seems misplaced to most of us, but I'll go out on a limb and say that most of us would say shes probably lovely lady otherwise.:)

I didn?t upgrade but she did, she kept my ring, and managed to get an even bigger one from #2. I tend to agree with a few others in that status isn?t anything worth spending that kind of $ on, especially if she is the one who is asking. If you wanted to do this and did, then that?s a very nice idea, but being envious of others rocks and then telling you she wants one seems shallow to me. Don?t take me too seriously because I?m not married, and happy.

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

I don't know guys, seems a bit harsh. If the lady wants a bigger diamond and it isn't going to put them in the poor house, I don't see an issue. People get different kicks out of different things.

I have seen some of these rocks on other women's fingers and I know my husband and I could afford to get me a much bigger and prettier ring, but I would rather spend it elsewhere. I wanted to get rid of our Green Ghetto boat, I swear, that thing is the ugliest of boats and it smells like mildew, do you think I was a bit envious of some of the boats I saw out on the water? You bet I was, I wasn't trying to keep up with the "Jones" rather I wanted a nicer boat, because I like boats. How are my desires any different than her?, she wears hers material desires on a finger, I put my material desires on a lake.

I'm not a jewelry person, I wear a wedding ring and that is it, but I can understand the desire to upgrade on a frivolous item. People are dying all over the world, I buy a boat. I'm not going to apologize for it, but in the grand scheme of things, it is just a frivolous as that ring.

just sayin ;)

I'm having a tough time reconciling this one too. I got married 14 years back in college and I dropped $3007 on her ring in cash I had saved. That was a lot of $ for me back then and I appreciate that she wears the same ring and hasn't asked (nor would she) for an upgrade. I suppose taking the emotion out of it, it is like cars. I'd never buy a new car, ever, but if nobody bought them the industry would cease to exist and so would used cars. Someone needs to upgrade.

I understand what you're saying.

Personally though, I wouldn't consider the original ring to be a frivolous item equatable to a new(er) boat, car, motorcycle, machine gun, etc.... The ring to me represents a piece of him given to her at a pivotal point in their relationship. I just think it's a little forward of her to basically say it's not good enough anymore, buy me a bigger one.

Just my 2?

Yeah, I get that too, and your right about the ring itself isn't frivolous, I meant the upgrade was frivolous, I could of worded that a bit better.

Yeah, I got your point, Silk. A toy is a toy, be it ring on the finger or boat in the water. All a matter of priorities. I try not to judge other folks' priorities, and certainly do not want them judging mine.

Kate Middleton didn't have any diamonds on her ring. Wonder if she'll want an upgrade??;) Oh, that's right, she'll have access to the crown jewels......
