Regardless of whether you read it correctly or not, your conclusion is correct, skargo. Breaking something and the retailer replacing it for free, costs us all money in the long run.

I agree.

Re: did a stupid thing

You guys are missing the point. It is not an entitlement for doing something stupid. It is not like breaking other merchandise. Don't forget that they get credit for cores they return to the battery supplier "Free Profit". That is the way my store described it to me

So for all the free cores they get, they can give away a "free battery" if they chose to do so.

Just like when I took my dropped battery back, the INTENT was to use it for the core deposit on the purchase of a new battery and get proper disposal of a hazardous thing that cannot be just put out with the trash.

His store and mine VOLUNTARILY suggested the free replacement. Probably as a Customer Service to a known frequent customer. They did this knowing that they would continue to make a profit from them and the free cores paid for it..

What really drives up retail cost is all the shop lifting that is included in the of price an item based on a tracked historic "shrink rate " of that item.

I'd take it back to the store, tell them what happened and see what they do. As long as you are honest about the situation, you are not ripping off the store.

I had a somewhat similar circumstance with a trailer winch, purchased from Academy Sports. I bought it along with a bunch of other stuff and accidentally left it in the shopping cart, while putting the rest of the stuff in my car.

I returned to the store after realizing what I had done, but the cart wasn't where I had left it in the lot, nor was there a winch in any cart that I could see. I didn't actually go into the store looking for a free replacement (my intent was only to ask if they had found one), but they gave me another anyway. It was about a $50 winch, which probably cost the store half that amount.

My personal opinion is that the store manager made a very good decision. I was actually somewhat new to Academy Sports at the time and now shop there frequently. I have surely provided them with a great deal more profit, than the $25 bucks that they lost by being nice. Simply put, in this age of retailers who treat customers like crap, I am very happy to spend my dollars at a place like Academy - as I am to tell everyone who wants to listen, about them.

I do agree with all those who suggested that you not try to repair it. Risking a chemical burn and all sorts of other mayhem, just isn't worth 70 bucks to replace it, if you have to lay the money out.

???

That was your cart???

I figured that I would never find the owner! Oh well, it has been a great winch
for me...hope that your new one has done as well!

Happy boating!

No, YOU are missing OUR point. Plus, I never saw where the OP said the store agreed to take his back. I'm glad your store let you get a replacement for your carelessness.

We are not missing any points, and I understand what you are saying about making a customer service decision. I still say that decision leads to higher prices.
But more specifically, I want to correct a misunderstanding of yours. A battery with a BROKEN case, will not be accepted as a "core". Period. So the retailer will not get any money for it, or "free profit" as you describe it. If your store said they get core reimbursement for broken cases, they are not telling you the truth.

Re: did a stupid thing

well I did a big oops on my part and droped and cracked the case on a brand new 12v battery.
is there anything you can patch the case with? epoxy, hot glue etc?
thanks
rob
Just to get this thread back on track.
It was wrong of me to suggest that Rob fix this battery.(actually I didn't) I was merely answering his question. I had a good strong battery that I fixed with a fiberglass patch, it was rub damaged not dropped, it never blew up leaked or anything of that nature as a result.

Thanks for letting me know. Never said they get credit for broken cases. He was referring to all the cores they do take in. Maybe his whole "story" was to get me to be OK accepting a free replacement. I had originally told him that he had a right to make a profit and not cover my error. Even at his cost, he really gained. He probably has made thousands of $ off us. Originally a 5 car family, he is now in 32 years of service for us and includes my grand children too. Great customer service decision years ago.

Back on topic. NEVER USE A SHOCK DAMAGED BATTERY such as one dropped. It could kill you or someone you love.

Re: did a stupid thing

As far as a "core" goes, why would a busted case even matter? it's the lead plates that they're after, are you saying they actually re-use the boxes?
