Yep, I use epoxy to coat all the wood frame parts of my seat frames etc. For everything else I use Poly. I keep a Gallon of Epoxy around pretty much all the time in my woodshop. I make a lot of outdoor furniture and use it for that all the time.

One thing I have learned... don't sweat over a deadline. It caused me to get stressed, and then I could not think. You are coming along nice, and you just need to keep plugging along.

Sorry to be the breaker of bad news .. but .. you have a LOT of grinding to do before glassin.

Grind until you have Fresh glass ( get rid of all the coating crap ).

Its a Bich but..thats what you need to do with fiberglass .. get it down to RAW glass without any coatings or crap in the way before you laminate.

I was torn today in what to do. Racing or Grinding. The Daytona 500 is under rain delay. So I'm Grinding. Will update later.

How will I know when I have removed enough material?

Well.. Look at your post #39 pics.

See all of that crappy looking stuff all over the fiberglass. Its gotta go.
See what looks like coffee stains in your pics .. ( looks like moisture coming up ) .. gotta go.
See those nice pinkish fresh looking spots .. Thats what you want.

When you wipe down with an acetone rag it should look Clean ( sparkly yes ) but clean !

You dont Sand/Scuff fiberglass for layups .. you GRIND it. You have Woven Roving .. its a pain to get down to raw glass..but it must be done.

Grinding sucks no doubt about it .. Grinding inside of a boat sucks even more.

Cover yourself up like the boy in a bubble ( USE EAR MUFFS !! ). Tape up your suit and use rubber gloves. Your full face is the best thing you bought in a resto.

Once you are bagged up..you should not be having any problems Grinding for an hour or two at a time :) .

I removed this A-Frame structure during demolition. It encased the ski locker area and narrowed into the bow. It is made of pressure treated pine. It was fastened to the bottom of deck with screws. It was added to increase rigid quality of the deck. Is this stock from Chaparral or perhaps added by a PO?
Any opinions? I would guess it can't hurt to replace with new wood.

I'll go out on a limb and say there is NO WAY that is original equipment.

It was probably a previous attempt at a patch job.

Re: DIYer VS. Rot - 1988 Chaparral SX 1900 Rebuild - With Pix

I'm replacing deck, stringers, and transom in 1988 Chaparral SX 1900. It currently has a alpha one outdrive connected to a 5.7 OMC. I also have a 1985 celebrity 5.7 (cracked block) with alpha one. It's my donor boat. Is it going to be worth it to replace the the OMC parts with all Merc parts? How much more work am I looking at? Should I just put the OMC power steering etc. back in? I've heard the transom whole is the same for merc or omc. Opinions please?

Today's plan of attack. Remove power steering and gimbal ring. Remove transom. Also replace 2 window regulators and rear brake pads. I will update with pix tonight! Any tips or advice? Much appreciated. Thanks

Re: DIYer VS. Rot - 1988 Chaparral SX 1900 Rebuild - With Pix

I just pulled the OMC engine mount-power steering plate and found this poor attempt by a PO (I would certainly think this is not a factory cut out) to make a drive hole in the transom. It is an Alpha One drive. I was planning on using Frisco's method of drawing a cut out pattern for my new transom. Is there a template available? Any suggestions?

Need some advise. Any suggestions on how I can tab in my new transom without pulling the cap. Also would anyone know or have any idea what that expanding substance on top of the transom is? I think it's there to add support to the swim platform. Pix below.

Nice work so far man. I have been away for a while, but I am getting back to reading the forums. That stuff you see at the top of the transom is a bondo like glue that they use to put the halves together. You can tab to it, but it will be hard, so just make sure you have the sides done really good.
