So I have a 91 Sunbird Corsair that I have had for along time and it has been flawless. The Omc 3.0 has never let me down and just runs fantastic. I have been a lucky one in only needing to replace the Balancer on this engine and otherwise it fires up and runs perfect on first try every time for years now.

Today was a day from hell. I noticed some water in Bilge area last time I took kids tubing. I figured it was from kids getting in and out wet as normal. Then I noticed the bilge was running a bit longer than normal but I overlooked it.

Anyways Planned for a Gulf trip today. Launched boat and she fired right up. We headed out abotu 20 miles. Stopped at first spot. After a while I noticed bilge was on. Then I noticed it stayed on. Pulled engine cover and the Bilge was slam full. Freaking out I fired engine to start heading to land. Engine fired up and ran for about 2 mins. Sputtered real bad and died. I figured it was becasue all the water getting thrown all over engine because pullies under water etc. Anyways. Buddies and I reacting quickly got started on getting water out quick. We did that with help of bilge pump. But water kept coming in. No plug was not missing......lol I will get to that issue in a min.

Back to engine. After getting water level down the focus went to getting engine started cause the water was not stopping. All we could get it to do was stumble and run like it was on one cylinder. Could only do this by choking carb.. Engine shaking bad and just wont run. It fires but acts like it is running on two cylinders. Water did not get in engine. We checked. First I figured something must be wet. But theres not that much. (Engine was running like it does when you change gears if that helps) Could not move boat. Would not run frankly. Carb looked to be flooding too which makes not sense but safe to assume cause not firing on all 4 cylinders? Anyways what would you guys check?

Next. We got towed (Thank god) While being towed spent time figuring out where water was coming from. Its coming from back of boat just under where the exhaust/water pipe is. Best I could tell the water was coming from that pipe but inside the back of the boat if that makes sense? No expert so fogive me for not being good with terms and lingo. How about I explain best I can. I can feel the exhaust/water exit pipe with my hand and under it as far as I can go in boat is where the water was coming from. You can feel what seems to be the bottom of the bracket that holds everything to boat just under that. Bottom of bracket then up to bottom of Tube. Water coming in from bottom of tube but in the wood.

Help me guys. I got a double wahm today. One problem caused another

when I first read your post I thought the leak could be from a cut in a stern drive boot.

However reading further it sounds like your exhaust system is leaking. As for the engine problem, if the backfllow preventer in the system was not functioning and the boat got low in the water from the excess weight, water could have gotten back into the engine.

Thanks Guys to the responses. I have to ask because wondering. If the transom is rotton but no hole on outside of boat how would water get in? I am trying to understand.

Does the exhaust pipe have a joint or gasket down there that could be bad? Not adding up and making sense.

Is there anyway to remove that pipe?

If the transom is bad that must mean it going to cost a pile of money to have fixed. Is that so? How can I find for sure if transom is rotton. What do I do. Cant sell boat that is leaking and cant see spending thousands of dollars on boat considering it age and condition.

The studs that hold the transom shield on are not tight when the wood rots away, and their will be gaps between the transom shield and transom of the boat.

Yes, there is an oring type seal on the Y pipe. It's held in with 4 bolts. You have to remove the engine to access it.

If the transom is bad that must mean it going to cost a pile of money to have fixed.

If you hire everything out, yes it will be expensive. Or do you plan on doing any of the work yourself?

Thanks for response. I can do the engine removel myself. I just have no idea about replacing a transom. I just went out and tried something.

I took the boot off the exhaust pipe from outside of boat. The one with slits in it.....There is a hose clamp that holds it on at back of boat. Anyways I took it off and moved it out of way. Put water hose in pipe and water is going in boat.

Then you need to pull the engine, remove the exhaust Y and see what the problem is.

Looks like you guys are right about rot. Just used inspection mirror and found wood missing I think.

You know how you said there are 4 bolts that hold the Y on? the bottom 2 bolts just under that is a gap where looks like wood is missing. Or looks like maybe that o-ring you spoke of has been leaking and roted some wood away. The gap goes under the pipe twards outside of boat.

What would you guys do if you were me? I am worried as hell at this point.

Possible the exhaust downtube where it connects to the transom assy.is leaking.
No matter what you do it's all gonna have to come out(motor inner shield and outer).
Luckily it's a very easy removal.
And maybe it's bad u-joint bellows.Pull the drive and check for water.
Oh yea put in a BIGGER pump. The 350 that most boats come equiped with is way too small!!!
Mine came with a 360 and it was ok for small amounts.
I had a baitwell drain that sprung a leak luckily It only leaked when setting still.
I changed to an 1100..J

Bigger Bilge pump you mean? I see your point but I would much rather not have a leak in the first place to even worry about.

Howdy,

Well, if you have a rotten transom, a replacement is a MAJOR fiberglass job.

It appears your engine and drive may still be "good". I would be looking for another similarly sized/powered boat with either a damaged engine and/or drive to swap out.

If your transom is rotten, the stringers, floor and other wood areas may be rotten making it not worth trying to fix.

Your other choice might just be to pull the drive, engine and transom mount, (in that order) and just part it out. Then use the money you get to buy yourself another boat. A good condx OMC 3.0L engine and drive are still worth a fair amount of money.

A few years ago I parted out my previously 460 King Cobra for more than $3k.

Good luck,

I understand that you would not like to worry about a leak. But maybe you should have worried about the warning signs. Now it looks like you have a bigger mess on your hands. Just my opinion. I'm glad it didn't turn into something worse.

Ayuh,.... To buy a 1000 or 1500 gph pump ain't that much more than a puny 350 gph pump...
'n in an Emergency, like yer's, it no doubt Helps, havin' the BIGGEST pump you can fit on board....

On my ole tin barge, I've got a 1000, 'n a 1500 pumps...

Worked on engine all day. Got fire on all plugs. No water in cylinders fuel is good but wont run any better than to shake and stumble at like 200 rpms.

Pull distributor cap & dry out the inside. Also make sure coil isn't wet. But, your main issue now I think is water intrusion.

Yep, A 16 ftr. say will fill up faster than a 30 ftr. Some boaters think that a smaller runabout only needs a small bilge pump when actually the opposite is true.

Can't find a sign of water anywhere. Changed oil. No water. Pulled plugs and there all dry. Turned engine over with plugs out and no water. Also found a drain on manifold and no water.

I did some tests the book calls for and the coil failed a test. Considering the spark looks weak I think its the coil. Now I have to figure how and where to get one.

I was suggesting the pump change not as a remedy but for future safety.
The coil part# is 0986644 Can be bought at ********** about $65.
