Re: DP290A removal of hinge Pins??????

How do you remove these rams from the transom shield?
That is a big job to remove the Ram's. Hopefully the transom has the cutouts so the pins have clearance to be removed. If not, the transom shield will need to be removed from the boat.

You will need the service manual for this job and maybe a Volvo special tool or two to help aid the removal. Start on page 142,

Boatinfo - Volvo Penta AQ280, AQ290, DP-A, DP-C SternDrive Service Manual

Good luck.:)

if your rams are not leaking? I wouldnt pull them. if they are leaking, unbolt the transom shield now that you have your boat out.

Im going to ask my engine builder for a quote on building a 396. If the engine is in good shape and only needs a refresh then it will just be rings, bearings, oil pump, timing chain and I will be doing the heads. If the cylinders need more than a honing, we will be looking into a full rebuild (aka 396 stroker)The problem I'm having is a valve issue but figured what the hell pull it and make sure it's all good. The engine has 837hrs on it.

With only 837 hours on it, I wouldnt even touch it. it is barely broken in.

Ok I think I need to give everyone the full back story of this boat. The guy I bought it from did nothing to it for 4 years. It not so much as a simple oil change for over 4 years. I paid $2000 for the boat and trailer. I just bought from a guy in Rochester and complete transom shield. The rams are year old and I have a written gaurantee that they will perform as such. I paid $575. I'm going swap my Equiptment for this newer stuff. All of my part numbers match the numbers on this unit. I could have just pulled the heads and given it the valve job it needed and been done with it. But I wouldn't know what I truly had until I pulled it apart. I agree I would have normally let it be at a simple valve job but with everything I've run in to this is a much better alternative.

I'm going to save all my old parts. Wish i could find some original style rams that are in good shape but don't leak. If someone could let me know where to find some, that would be helpful, thanks. I need the caps. I'm going to try rebuilding them. My caps are so corroded that fluid leaks from every pin hole.

Ok dr report is in. Crank is good, cam is good, lifters are good. Heads need a valve job, and the cylinder walls need boring. They are extremely loose. I gave the order for the valve job, new pistons and the bore. I could stroke it but I'm not going to waste the money. In two or three years we will be upgrading.

Re: DP290A removal of hinge Pins??????

Ok guys I just pulled transom shield in prep for the newer one which will be arriving any day. I find something that is a little disturbing but not a total loss as I have been down this road before. The lower part of the transom is wet. It's not even close to being a rotted mess but it is wet none the less. The question now is what do I do? I've been down this road with my Thompson. The Thompson was rotted really bad and I had no choice but to replace the transom. This boat is not nearly to that point. I feel horrible putting it back together this way but I feel like I'll be safe for another 4 or 5 years before is becomes an issue. I welcome all thoughts and opinions.

I would pull it apart and redo it if it was me.

however that being stated, if only an inch or two is wet around the garboard drain and the wood is solid. I would also consider just drying it out, treating with ethylene glycol to kill the bacteria, then dry it out again. Then seal the area where it is getting wet from before re-assembly.

I put an inferred heat lamp to it yesterday. I checked this morning and it's drying well.

After the bio treatment and drying you might consider injecting CPES (clear penetrating epoxy sealer). It's a two part epoxy that's runny as water and soaks deeply into wood damaged by water. It is also forgiving of a bit of moisture remaining. Google the RotDoctor. Good luck.

CPES has been covered many times on the site. it does not penetrate that deep and only does an ok job of attempting to keep out water. if the transom is at the point of considering CPES, its time to rebuilt it.

Then I don't want to argue the point, but perhaps I should have been more precise with the word "deeply". I suppose it depends on the technique and the circumstances. In my experience, I got about 2" of penetration, aided by drilling some pin holes into the end grain and using a Hypodermic needle and sryinge. That is all I was looking for and I was pleased with the result. Years later when I tore it apart for a different reason, it showed no further deterioration. Again, that's all I was looking for. It is certainly not a cure for a rotten transom.

Upon further investigation I find that I do not have a big problem. I have some experience with rotted transoms and this is just a couple of localized wet spots that I have arrested.

Re: DP290A removal of hinge Pins??????

I have a question about the transom shield seal strip. I know that mercruiser does not require any additional sealant around the transom shield. Is volvo the same way? I have a newer transom shield ready to install and my new ruber seal should arrive this tuesday. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I used just a dab of 3M 4200 where the splice in the strip is.

Hey Scott do you know what the torque specs are for the transom shield? I can't seem to locate the figures. I can't imagine they are over 30 ft lbs

Not off my head, however I may have the installation manual at home. let me look.

However I did a quick google search and found 25 lb-ft for a newer shield. I would not go above 30

Mercruiser calls for 23 ft lbs. not that VP and Merc have anything in common.
