Re: DP290A removal of hinge Pins??????

Does anyone know where the zinc saver wire connects. I can't locate it anywhere in my pictures. The wire is on the starboard side.

inside or outside the transom shield?

If your talking the outside, the bonding screw is just above upper left boss around the exhaust opening. about 11oclock position

if your talking the inside, there is one wire to the steering arm, and one wire that goes to the transom shield itself.

Hey Scott. I'm installing a/c in the boat. Instead of installing a second seacock, can I "T" off the seacock that exist already and supplies the manual head? I would use a check valve to keep the flow from the AC supply line restricted. Keeping air out of the line when AC pump is idle ( not in use).

It is recommended to use a separate seacock for the AC, at least that is what was on the instructions on the AC unit that I help my friend put in his sailboat.

did you get your bonding wires connected?

A bit late on this........ but for others and for future...... there is no reason to remove the entire drive for an engine replacement.
Separate the engine from the Flywheel Cover, and leave the F/C installed in the transom shield.
The PDS bearings and seals can be replaced while the F/C remains in place.

Bill, this caught my eye because the only reason I'm planning to haul my boat is to replace the PDS bearings. I'm looking at the O/H procedure and I don't see any way to remove the clips, seal and bearing on the aft end except by removing the F/C from the transom plate. What am I missing? Are you suggesting that the rear bearing can be pulled by working through the hole in the transom plate and that the drive would still have to be removed? If so, I don't see the advantage so I must be missing something....

Kind of hijacking ricky...The snout of the flywheel cover sticks through the transom shield. The transom shield doesn't come into play.

Oh please don't be. Interaction is what this is all about. Chime in anytime. I have learned so much from everyone here..... I rebuilt my first boat 2 years ago with the help from everyone here. I will say that I have fell in love with the older volvo drives and AQ set up. Simplicity is key. But sometimes expensive.

I second that. Just tore my DP290A down to be able to blast the castings and repaint and reseal this week. a seal kit, two pins, some tilt bushings, a new trim gear segment and I think I spend $300

Your not kidding.. I just did the ultimate in simple. I didn't have time to reseal my DP290A so I dropped it off at my marina. I told Fran to go ahead make it sing. Oooooops! $2487.67 later.......Yikes!!!! But it's like new now.

Hey Scott. I bought this product called kiwi grip. It's a non skid paint for walking surfaces. I bought it to apply to the dash board which once had a black vinyl on it. The black vinyl was cracked and very dirty.. I striped it and now I'm confused as to what to put on the dash. It should be black I think, to reduce glare. Right?

Scott have you ever installed a seacock? I have two place to install one. Just opposite the existing one which supplies the toilet. Picture "A"image.jpg
Or I can install it 48" forward from the location shown above. Picture "B"image.jpg
Although this is my preferred location I am concerned that this location is to far forward. What do you think? The seacock will supply my ac.

I would install the seacock as aft as posible in the event you leave the A/C running and decide to move the boat.

Greg, that Kiwi Grip looks really good. I have to refinish my upper deck (Gelcoat) and was looking at Durabak polyurethane, but that Kiwi Grip Acrylic looks like a good candidate as well. Did you have to use primer? Is the result hard like Gelcoat or is it more rubbery under foot? Do you think it woulod stand up to people dancing barefoot on it? Thanks. -Rick PS - your project is looking really nice!

Hey Rick sorry it took so long to get back to you. Kiwi Grip is a 1 part epoxy. No primer is needed. I bought it from Jamestown Distributors. You want to buy the textured roller as well. Plan on applying your entire area at one time or buy extra textured rollers. Also, it doesn't go as far as you would think. It's a mayonnaise consistency.

Hey guys here's an update. Motor runs great and the drive engages as it should. I ran into a problem with the hydraulic tilt/trim rams. They were leaking badly. Instead buying new ones at $1200, I rebuilt the pair for $150. The guy that manufactures these kits specializes in hydraulics. His name is Bill Lawrence. For anyone who may need his services here is his email. volvopentaparts@hotmail.com
He is also an expert on everything volvo penta. This rebuild process was extremely easy.

Hey Scott do you still need any parts? I have plenty left over between the two transom shields.
Some I will restore and sell. Others your welcome too if needed. Just say the word. I will mail out to you.
