1990 140hp
I was running about 3k RPM last weekend when I heard a BANG clack clack clack then the motor smoothed out. I thought it sounded and felt a lot like what people describe clutch dogs shearing off as, but then I dropped the LU (after being towed home) and found this. Pulled off the water pump housing to begin trying to disassemble the LU but more than just the pump housing lifted when I pulled it up..

Putting it into gear by pushing and pulling the shift shaft Does engage both F and R and when in gear the prop spins that visible portion of the drive shaft freely so it's not like the gears locked up and and it twisted the drive shaft off.
I'm thinking maybe this had something to do with it:

This got to the present condition from looking great quite fast. The cover mount was completely corroded on the inside and it broke apart when I took it off.
Could it be that the mount was rotted and allowing the motor to bump around and created some stress fractures in the drive shaft that eventually snapped at this pressure point where it hits the metal casing on its way into the gearcase?
How did I snap this??

I'm working from a factory service manual.
I have a v6 gearcase that used to be here that I'm going to see if I can cannibalize the driveshaft off of and a 1986 200hp that i'm going to see if I can cannibalize the mounts and mount covers off of. So far in the gearcase teardown I've got the water pump off and the prop shaft bearing housing's 4 bolts removed but can't find a big enough puller to get the housing pulled out yet. I picked up a puller with 8" arms at harbor freight today that i'm going to try when I get home.
Any tricks to getting that bearing housing out?
