We have just had a couple of incidents in Western Australia that are sad and tragic.

1. The police drove a group of people home, about 7 of them, because they were too drunk to drive themselves. A couple of hours later the same police attended a motor vehicle accident. 3 of the people they had taken home, including an 11 week old baby, were now dead. They had run out of beer and decided to go back to the hotel to get more. They never made it, they crashed into a road train. To add insult to injury (and death), only the driver, the baby's mother, was wearing a seat belt....

2. A 26 year old woman was killed on her way home from work. She was traveling on the freeway when a seriously drunk driver, traveling the wrong way hit her head-on. They had a convergent speed of over 120 MPH. This guy had had his license canceled months before, for drink driving. He gave a blood alcohol reading of 0.245 at the scene. The legal limit is 0.05!

Can anyone please tell me why people who are so drunk still think it's ok to drive?

Chris.......... ( living in the sad state of inebriation)

I think the key is in your last sentence - the alchohol prevents them from thinking ......

Re: Drunk at the helm.

I remember in college going out to a club and having who knows how much to drink. I managed to make it out to my buddies car and I remember saying that I didn't think I would have a problem driving home. I said let me give myself a sobriety test on the yellow parking spot divider line. I took one step and fell over, yet thought I could drive.

To me driving drunk should be a felony, no such thing as misdemeanor risking of life.

I don't drink, never have and I despise anyone that drinks and gets behind the wheel of anything. Don't care if it's a lawnmower.
They have no sense of what they are doing.

Re: Drunk at the helm.

ill drive after a beer or 2 after three if somone else is with me that hasent had anything to drink 3 starts to be questionable as i start getting a buzz after 3 but if i have to ill drive. 4 i wont drive unless theres someone else willing to drive me home or i eat something and wait at least an hour before heading home. even at 4 i feel that i can safely drive but wont. i dont have a huge buzz or anything after 4 but enough that im not going to risk my life or anyone else's. i used to be a very heavy drinker it used to take me 12 beers before i started to feel a buzz but after that i didet drink not one drop of alcohol for over a year and now im a bit more of a lightweight. i also have no doubt that i would pass any sobriety test at any time im behind the wheel. i also feel that driving overly tired is as much of a danger on the road as being drunk.

Re: Drunk at the helm.

If you drink 2 beers and weigh less than 180 lbs you'll probably be legally drunk in Louisiana. .05 BAC is DWI here. 3 beers will put you over if you weigh less than 250 lbs.

Here's a link to a Blood/Alchohol estimator:

If you have a "buzz" you are definitily drunk enough to affect your reactions and decisions. Alchohol will influence your actions well before you feel it.

I agree with SBN, and I hope nobody I care about is anywhere around you if you're driving after 2 or 3 beers.

According to my weight I'd have to have 8 drinks in me to be just over the legal limit. That would put me at .09 whereas the limit is .08. There is no way I could drink that much without being drunk. I drink extremely little, maybe a case of beer and a fifth of whiskey a year. The other night I was at my folks house playing spades. I had Coke and Crown Royal, maybe 4 oz total of liquor. I knew that that was plenty for me. Thats not anywhere close and I knew it was enough. I just don't see how someone can drink enough to blow a .24.

I agree that drinking and driving is bad, but mixing Crown Royal with coke is just wrong.

Interesting. When I lived in Louisiana, 20 years ago, there were drive up daquiri shops. My favorite was the DOA. How appropriate. I've changed, I guess LA has too.

They do it because we're not tough enough on them...

Torture and kill the drunk driver that kills someone else in an accident, and televise it on national T.V... there will be 0 drunk driving incidents for months. But of course, we have to live in an "enlightened" society where it's not ok to punish the guilty.

It's like parolling rapists... for every 4 rapists that are parolled, you've condemned 3 innocent women to be raped by them. Rapists should never be parolled, and drunk drivers also need to start paying a heavier price.

I say:
1st DUI, non-accident related - lose your liscense for 5 years
2nd DUI, non-accident related - lose your liscense for life and vehicle seized

Get caught driving on a suspended liscense, go to prison for 10 years and all property seized.

1st DUI, accident related - go to prison for 5 years and lose your liscense for life, if a death was involved, go to prison for 25 years. All property seized and sold with proceeds going to the victim or the victim's next of kin.
2nd DUI, accident related - super gruesome tortuous death penalty to be executed within 1 year of conviction, and televised. All property seized and sold with proceeds going to the victim or the victim's next of kin. :)

Now you're thinking... thank God almighty he's not in charge... and let me just tell you, you have NO IDEA how many times I've said that myself. :D

This is so easy......drink more than one every two hours, dont drive, period. If out take a cab. Id rather stay at home if drinking, with friends and family knowing noone will drive period.
