What do people think of the new 'seller can't leave a negative' policy?

I for one won't be selling on there again. Too easy to be blackmailed.

Seller feedback was unique.

Guess they're gonna have to keep they're positive ratings the old fashioned way.

Yes....but if you get a bad buyer-eg doesn't turn up to collect, tries to haggle on price after winning auction etc or refuses to pay there's now no leverage over them at all or any way to warn others.

Apart from ignoring their bids and contacting the 2nd highest bidder... then using the reply to negative feedback in your own profile to explain it... or you could file a complaint with Ebay and let them deal with the bidder.

eBay used to have a conflict arbitration system where complaints could be filed for something like $20 dollars per complaint. With this new policy in force eBay can make even more money in conflict arbitration

If posting negative feedback was your only recourse, you haven't fully familiarized yourself with eBay.

For example:

eBay said:
Unpaid Items can usually be resolved by direct communication between buyers and sellers. eBay provides an online process enabling the buyer and seller to communicate with each other to resolve the situation. eBay's Unpaid Item policy and eBay's User Agreement make clear that buyers must pay for the items that they commit to purchase.

There are four steps to the Unpaid Item process.

1) Sellers can file an Unpaid Item Dispute.

Sellers can report an Unpaid Item up to 45 days after the transaction date (i.e. the date when the buyer commits to buying the item and the seller commits to selling it). Usually the seller must wait 7 days after a listing closes to file an Unpaid Item Dispute. However, in the following exceptional cases, the seller can file a dispute immediately:

At the time of the filing the buyer is no longer a registered user of eBay.

The seller and buyer wish to mutually withdraw from the transaction.

In the first case the buyer will receive an Unpaid Item strike and the seller will receive a Final Value Fee credit without any additional steps.

In the second case the seller must file the dispute for mutual withdrawal. If the buyer responds to the dispute and agrees, the seller will receive a Final Value Fee credit and no strike will be given to the buyer. If the buyer fails to respond, the seller can still close the dispute to receive a Final Value Fee credit, and the buyer will not receive an Unpaid Item strike.

And then it goes on to outline the remaining steps.

Well we never leave negative feedback. It is to easy for someone not to pay and if you leave them negative feedback then they leave you negative feedback even though the bid and won the item and never paid. Alot of the time they never even contact you.

Well this is interesting. I am trying to get things setup to sell on ebay, the only thing that I am waiting on is the paypal info to be verified.

So far I have a bunch of stuff to put on there but figuring out which items to put on there for a buy it now price and which items to put up for bid will be fun. I have nearly 220 items (give or take a few) to put on ebay, mostly boat parts.

Re: Ebay new feedbck policies

as a buyer or seller i never give feedback until i have or the buyer has recieved the item, and is happy.

paypal, just collected $500.00 for me on a credit card charge back. buyer made deposit, thru paypal, and cash balance on pickup, then charged back the $500 deposit, say it was unauthorized. fortunately i keep all files, on transactions.

No problem with the policy here. As a seller, no pay - no ship, has worked just fine for me. I have had some slow payers for what ever reason, but I see no reason to trash them, if I do get paid.

In reality, there is no perfect marketing system, including eBay. If I sell a boat out of my front yard and the deal is more smelly than I'd like it to be, there is no negative feedback to post, so I just deal with it as best I can.

eBay to too good of a place to buy and sell, for this policy to be a deal breaker, IMO.

Don't let this policy keep you off eBay, IMO.

If you have stuff to sell, that people want to buy and you do your auctions right, you'll have many more good deals than bad, if you have any at all.

Since you are new, do your eBay homework reading about the usual scams, etc. to look out for and how to set up auctions to work best.

Good luck.

Yeah, but when there's people giving a neg for postage costs when it cost MORE to post than they paid etc and ebay are suspending seller accounts now for low a % of negs in the last 12 months-only needs one guy with an attitude and byebye seller account.

Well I have 2 items on ebay up for bid right now, still has 6 days or so to go on them and I already have 2 watchers on the 1 item. Be interesting to see if this brings any money my way. The shipping part is a little screwy but I tried to be as accurate as I could get. I'm just doing the basic auction, I don't see paying out the nose to sell an item.

I figured that I would start out with 2 items instead of posting auctions left and right, it would be a little overwhelming to post and sell all the items I have at once.

Re: Ebay new feedbck policies

I have mixed feeling about the feedback system. I am a buyer only and have a 100% positive rating on about 20+ purchases. I always communicate quickly and render payment within a day or so.

I never offer a rating until I have received one from the seller, and I have only given one negative rating and one neutral. The negative was the result of a seller packaging two powerheads in the same cardboard box with nothing more than a small amount of bubble wrap around them - both powerheads were damaged. Even though this was a pretty boneheaded thing to do, I only gave the negative rating after contacting the seller (with photos of the damage) to see what he would do about the situation, and he didn't even reply. The neutral rating was over a wiring harness and plug for a 1958 Rude Bigtwin. What I received was total junk, but the seller did refund my money after I sent it back. Had I not had to pay the shipping both ways, I would have given him a positive, even though I couldn't use the part.

On a more recent purchase, I received a transom bracket and pivot tube for an older Chrysler 10hp motor that had a portion missing (broken off) where the tilt lock fastens. This was inspite of the fact that the listing indicated no damage. I still gave this seller a positive because he was a high volume "EBayer" and had a pretty good overall rating. Additionally, the part that was busted wasn't the one out of the assembly that I needed, and I only paid ten bucks + shipping for the whole thing. While it was sort of annoying to receive something that wasn't as described, I just felt it was appropriate to cut the guy some slack because, when you have sold a few thousand items, one or two mistakes must be reasonably considered to be inevitable.

All of this said, I have to wonder if it is fair to let one side of the transaction only, rate the other. In my broken powerhead situation, I actually asked the seller to put the pair of two cylinder powerheads in the same box. While I feel that doing so with next to nothing to keep them from hitting one another, and no padding to keep them from punching out of the box (which they did - UPS had to repackage them), he could have somewhat fairly said that he did what I asked.

Regardless, EBay has done this and we'll just have to see how it works out.

I've never left negative feedback, well I never needed to. I am also scared to because the seller could leave me the same and we'd screw each other. Now I'm safe, how awesome is that? If they **** me off, that's it, a big phat negative for them! :D

Re: Ebay new feedbck policies

I'm a parts manager at an ATV dealer. We have an eBay store and sell somewhere from 10K-20K a month in parts on eBay. So far, only one spaz left me negative feedback because he couldn't follow the manufactures instructions.

I feel like when we do a good job and get parts shipped in a timely fashion that customers will leave appropriate feedback. The part I don't like is that I can't leave negative for a non-paying bidder or a check bouncer. I think its important to be able to tell the eBay community about these problem buyers.

Ebay should spend more time trying to figure out how to lower sellers fee's and come up with special listing pricing for powersellers.... The selling and listing fee's are getting waaaayyyy too expensive. Even the buyers know it, a lot of them call me at the shop and ask for a better deal if they order it over the phone so I won't have to pay the selling fee or the BS Paypal fee's. Of course I can always make a better deal over the phone.... :D

Just my 2 cents.... :)

We're already paying high postage to subsidize those folks sending junk mail.

Ebay is like big oil - they have a certain level of profit they feel they have to make. Now you want us lonely individual sellers to subsidize the big power sellers by offering them lower costs?

The computers don't care whether there's 1000 people offering one item each, or 1 person offering 1000 items. Ebay's cost is the same.

I think your looking to deep at my statement. I just think eBay should offer a better rate for those who maintain a powerseller status. You don't have to have 1000 items for sale to be a powerseller. You have to maintain a 98% positive feedback rating, and sell more than $1000 for 3 months in a row, anybody can do this. Which means that powersellers should get a break because we move more volume which equals more Paypal fees (Paypal is owned by eBay) and more eBay fees. Most powersellers also have an eBay store that has a monthly charge and auto-relist that costs money.

Wether it be eBay services or marine parts, the more you buy, the more you should be able to save. It just makes sense.
