replace those water deflectors...looking squashed. could be an over heat problem themselves. I just had that prob on 88spl.

Todd. the reason I dint change the deflectors was simply because I am assuming they deflect (stop the water flow at that point?). There is no way water is getting past them so I left them in?
Was I right? can someone explain what they actually do and why they are rubber and not part of a casting? I can soon whip the heads off and replace them!

Cool. $30 per hole is reasonable. So, for about $150, you can have a new piston and ring set and boring for each hole. $600 is not too bad for that.

Just over U$D 1000 or there about, with complete gasket set and the few other things I had to buy. If I need to do it again I can get things cheaper as I now have loads of resources and I'm also more educated:)
I'm happy with it.

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

Hope this isn't a ridiculous question. Could you wire a sending unit on each cylinder bank with just one gauge? ie the gauge displaying the higher/highest temp?
V153
I was thinking the same thing (2 gauges, 1 gauge on each bank of pistons ) and I would like to get this on my engine, Can anyone suggest best make and supplier for an outboard? I'm sure there easy enough to fit and well worth it. I've seen loads on the net but mainly for cars which wont need the long cable run to the dash.

The water deflectors new are round and alow some water around cyl and provide back pressure to force water around other way. When flat I think they totally block some water from getting to a portion of jacket. They were my whole PR.oblem after I rebuilt entire cooling system. That motor block is same as my 88spl

Pull the heads off and recheck the deflectors. They are there to guide the water to the proper passages in the block. If they swell up they can block the water off. Yes I know a p**s poor design.

My understanding is the deflectors stop the water taking a shortcut between the cylinders, they force it to go up one side, over the top and down the other side.
I guess that's what boobie said.

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

Yea Ben, all the above very true. Taking those heads off is easy and as long as you don't run it too much gaskets can be reused. So I'd definitely replace them. 3 buck$ apiece. Have to do my port side soon but my stb (1&3) were running 200 deg and HAD to do them and needed boat running for holidays so I only fixed what I HAD to.
Good luck and I can't say enough replace deflectors!

Do you by chance have a picture of the "lower crankshaft head?" There's a question on another thread concerning the casting of the outside area where the crank exits.

Here is thread if you're interested:

Just a thought if you do.

Great work by the way,

I haven't put the boat on the water yet but am due to soon, If I get chance to change the deflectors before I do go on the water I will. If I don't get chance to change them and I get overheat alarm then that may prove your point.

I'd still like to know exactly how they work, what I don't understand is IF these simply deflect why didn't Evi just simply block off the flow at the time they designed the casting? I know that the deflectors on my 115 are not allowing water to flow past them, tilted the head to one side and kept water above the deflectors to see if they "seeped" over 2 days ....they didn't so I assume they are ok. Unless they do some sort of expansion and contraction to temporarily allow flow then block off at a certain time/point?
Does anyone out there really know how they work? I'd like to know............
Ben

Sorry but I don't like NOT understanding things!

Ben,
when the deflectors are flat they block water on that side of jacket from continuing on to stb side of cyl 3. When new they are round and new they only stop water from going under and back around cyl 1. Look real close at your pictures and you can see what I mean.

I agree and am gonna take the heads off tomorrow and replace them, they have them in stock at the dealer U$D3 each so I'm gonna go for it. I only wish YOU could have educated me before I rebuilt the head as they don't have anymore head gaskets in stock so I'll have to reuse them. Anyway no worries and THANKS for the tip mate :D
I'll take picture before and after

if you get the quality ON-OFF-ON switch that kills power before applying power you can do that. I did that at first and just chhecked each head by flipping a switch to read the guage...but I got false readings...because i was told that the switch was not up to the tas..even though it was an on -off-on switch...

I like looking at two different gauges anyway....instant...no reaching down trying to switch and then re look.....in reality too many things going on while boating.. waves, obstacles, other instruments, things in the boat, other boats ect..

the more things that do themselves the better!
