Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

Not to be nosey or anything, but what was the price on the pistons and boring?
You can ask no worries
I paid 140 U$D, or there about for each piston.
4 Pistons, 4 sets of rings with pins, C clips, needle bearings, full gasket set and a litre of Johnson oil cost me U$D 1000. I didn't think that was too bad considering IF I bought them on line with postage and import tax, it would end up about the same.
They haven't done the boring yet its still in the shop

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

Guys I need some advice and the information isn't in the manual!!

The head needs re-boring to 0.030 the machinist is asking me what should be the clearance between the wall of the piston and the wall of the cylinder?? and if I cant supply the information he won't do the job. I've found another engineer that will do the job and says he doesn't need that information (that's dubious) as he can work it out from the piston ring size?. I've read up on this and think I now understand that because of different manufacturing processes the pistons expand in different ways hence if the gap is too small it may seize, too big and it will slap about causing pre-mature wear. The dealer tells me he doesn't know the gap information and no-one has ever asked before! I'm not an engineer so have absolutely no idea?
The manual only gives a max tolerance of 0.040 inch for the V4 90deg Evinrude 1998 ,
The pistons are Sierra, a company that now doesn't exist (that's reassuring)

Can anyone help? please

the reason the machinist asks that is he is probably used to boring automotive blocks.. and they are bored based on the pistons...esopecially racing motors. but you are buying over soze pistons..are they forged or cast...probably cast if sierra. the bore is standard, if you are buying .010" oversize pistons, then you bore the block .010" over the standard bore size...which is 3.500 ( tolerance is + or - .0005) so the machinist bores the block 3.510....if the pistons are .020" over size, the block is bore to 3.520..

so you didnt tell us what size pistons you bought( i hope you bought OVERSIZE pistons!!!) you could have taken a guess on what the bore would clean up at after boring...

generally you would bore to standard oversizes until the block finally cleans up clean...then order the pistons for that size!!!, but you bought the pistons first!!!!

the ring gap is .019" - .031"...but you cant adjust that.... you have to bore to + or- .0005" on the bore to match the pistons you buy the rings will fit your pistons so they will fit the bore...

sooooooo what size pistons did you buy?????????

ps: heads dont get bored...its the block that gets bored... the head probably needs to be milled flat...or you need to buy a used head....from the look of the pistons, I know the head looks the same!!!! dont leave broken ring bits in the chamber of the head...they must come out!! or you buy another head.

Thanks for the information Bob
Sorry I forgot to mention I bought 0.030 pistons, I may have been able to bore to 0.20 but I couldn't get 0.020 pistons here in Dubai
The head looks totalled so I'm buying a new one, I asked that question because some one asked me and I wanted to make sure..............please remember i'm an idiot at this :D BUT I only have to be told once ;).

Nahhh you're not an idiot anymore. You'll have some useful experience when you're done here and will be anxious to do it again :D

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

I'm just reading about setting the timing (whilst I'm waiting for the re-bore to be done) and want to make sure I am clued up on what needs to be done.
Can you guys give me some tips ? the manual does tell me but as always I like to ask the experts and get as much information as possible :D

did you get the FACTORY Manual????

bob
Err no..............and that's because I can't buy one to download. Out here its all a bit hit and miss with the postage especially books/ manuals. I know from experience.
IF anyone knows where I can buy a good manual to download I will?
The one I have is (I think) the seloc one it's ok but a bit generic.

Bob you seem to be an expert:)
Can you do me a favour and advise me where and what manual to buy? I know if I choose I'll end up getting the wrong one.
I was looking at this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-Johnson-Evinrude-Service-Manual-90-115-HP-Spl-/390358747109
That's gonna cost me U$D 50 + postage U$D 35, thats ok but I would prefer if someone could advise it actually is the best manual for me?
Cheers

I am far from an expert, but I have been playing with some mid 90s 90 and 115 hp outboards for three years now.....

thats the book you want.....while you are at it...look up the accessories manual for 1998 as well...it has good diagrams of the controls and TNT units as well as misc things.

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

What do the machinists charge to punch a cylinder out .030 over, out that way?
Hi Zeph
Just had the boring and honing done on all 4 to 0.03 U$D120 for the lot.............Now onto the rebuild.

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

I'm putting the power head back together and the manual is a little confusing with its torque settings some times it mentions foot pounds and other times it mentions pound foot ?
Can someone educate me and confirm deny that foot pounds is the same as Pound foot?

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

Everything will be either foot pounds or inch pounds. Make sure you use new rod bolts as the factory torques them to the high end and they are usually stretched and dont use loctite!!! Also pull a little "gelseal" on the block where lower and center main bearing set as this will quieten the motor up, the factory does this on all the newer engines and I do it on all my rebuilds...

Re: Evinrude 115 stripdown

Noted and thanks for the useful tip:)
My torque wrench is in foot pound and for the inch pounds I just convert to foot pound, I'm assuming this is ok or do I need to buy an inch pound wrench?
