Evinrude 115 stripdown

Engine overheating so I change the thermostats .....still overheating so changed the Impeller .Still overheating and now coughing at tick-over.
Mnnn .I should have listened to you guys in the first place as someone told me to check engine compression.
Checked the compression today and low and behold cylinder #1 is down to 50 while 2,3 and 4 are 150
I've never stripped down and engine before...................... I did ask a local Eviinrude shop for a cost for them to repair it and they came back with a figure of 2 times what I paid for the boat (17 foot Fletcher with the 115 on the back). A new engine I cant afford and again it will cost more than the boat is worth.
So I have nothing to lose by attempting this myself, I'm gonna take the head off in a couple of days and I will post some pictures of what I find. ANY help at all, is, as always very much appreciated, I know you guys are experts and I am just hoping you will help me out with advice.

take lots of pictures before you unbolt anything....get a good factroy book...

you only need to get it apart, and take the block to a guy and have him bore the one low comp hole to the very next available piston size...get the new piston and rings...get new rings for the other pistons, get all the holes honed a little...get a new gasket set, rebuild the carbs...

stick it back together...

cross your fingers you dont bust a bunch of rusty bolts, and need more machine shop work..

of course maybe youll get lucky and find some NON marked cylinder ...reason for the low comp.

maybe a head gasket....dont know enough about the crossflows to really say though

Pull the heads first before doing anything. It could be just a blown head gasket.

Along with lots of photos I suggest you put post it notes inside zip lock bag with notes on where the hardware came from. They look so similar but it will save time putting correct bolt back in place. And also someone here may have better suggestion but the cylinder head cover bolts were a BEAR. I think twice about just leaving them in place.

Taking the heads off first just to have a look.hoping it maybe the gasket !Ill post some pictures

Took the head off cylinder #1 Picture attached .i,m guessing the damage was a broken ring.
Time to take it apart then

$6000 is the highest i have ever heard of..

you can bring your motor to a place in PA, Va, and Fla called Outboard 1 (I think) they will take your motor and give you a rebuilt motor for about $3500...with a guarantee... or you can buy a rebuilt power head for about $2500.....

carbon buildup is a big reason rings let go, I ahve heard.... decarb once in a while

Ummm....well, you can fix that motor for considerably less than 6k bucks.
I did one about 6 months ago with similar damage, broken rings due to overheat, #1 nad #3 were scored by ring parts and pieces, the damage was pretty severe.

Anyway, it cost about 350 for the parts, (new head, two new pistons, gaskets).

And I actually just cleaned up the exhaust port dings with a dremel, and honed the two cyls (with the crank in place), never even took off the port head.....cleaned and cleaned, and cleaned....put it together, and it hits 120 lbs on all 4 and runs great. I have been watching it to be sure it is hanging in there...and so far so good.

I know...I know...but the owner wanted to do it that way. He figured the motor was blown anyway, so there was nothing to lose by trying the cheap way.

Nice looking motor. What year is it? You should be able to find all kinds of options, before you spend 6k on it to rebuild it. How do the cylinder walls look? If there is no scoring on the walls and they just need honing, then you're that much ahead. A new set of pistons will be in order either way you go. The 115 is a good motor and worth fixin up.

Its a 1998 115SPL , I must admit is did run very well even with the damage! It just coughed and spluttered at tick-over.
Cylinder bore picture attached what do you reckon?
I haven't got the power head off yet so I cant take it in for inspection.

I would see if honing will clean those cylinders up. If it doesn't, then a re-bore will be needed. Even if you have all four bored out and rebuilt it, you'll be in it for much less than 6 grand. I bet I could do a complete rebuild on this for much less than a grand. It's a nice motor and I would spend the money, if it was mine. Once you get oversized pistons with rings for it, all you'll really need after that is bearings and gaskets. Since your motor is new enough, you may even get by with keeping your original bearings, providing they're in clean condition. Your crank should mic out fine I'm betting

carb kits, pistons and rings gaskets a few important bearings...you are knocking on the door of $1000 easily...even in america!!, you add in screws and bolts that are needed,a water pump and thermostats, plugs new wires, you are over $1000.


add in the machining..and you got more money...bore and hone a hole is $40-$50 per hole,
I know i took apart and bored all the holes on a 1997 V4 ocean pro

Still a lot less than 6 grand though, right bob? I know what rebuilds cost, I just completed a rebuild on a Ford 460 with 8 new pistons, a bore job, machined crank, new cam, lifters and the works for just over 2 grand. And that's 8 cylinders there not 4. so, if you can't rebuild a 115 for a grand, then something is wrong. I've only worked on engines for 33 years now, which isn't very long to some. This motor is only a 1998, not a 1957. A lot of stuff here isn't even broke in. LOL I think the only reason why a ring broke, was because of a flaw of some sort.

No one should have to spend $40 - $50 a hole for boring. If you hone it, buy a honing tool and do it yourself. Maybe about $20
A motor that new, all the screws should come out without breaking any.
a waterpump, should be about $30 - $40 tops.
Thermostats? Why?
Plugs? maybe
New wires? Why?
Carb kits? No way.

In outboard years, this motor is in it's infancy It won't be as bad as one would think. If a person does the research, in this economy, a lot of stuff can be had for a good price. Don't worry though. Anyone who works for a dealer would probably have you believe it's a real bad issue.
