Re: Evinrude vs Mercury?

thanks guys for the advice.
I dont know that the older ones are better just that is all I can currently afford. I would love to have a new one.
I noticed that some of the motors are 2 stroke and some 4 stroke. Is there any performance differences if they both are the same HP? I did notice the 4 strokes seem heavier.

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury?

Evinrude and Mercury are the exact same motor, just different logos slapped on them ( well newer models at least), both i find are reiable and you can't really compare them. But then again ive never ran an older motor always had new !

Andrew you may be confusing Johnson and Evinrude. We're talking about motors from the 70's. The Merc and OMC are very different.

And I agree about the assessment of the two; had the same battles with boaters when I was growing up--the racers and motor heads liked the Mercs; the fishermen and recreational boaters liked the solid reliable trouble free OMC. That being saifd, I remember in the mid 60's - early 70's the watermen on the eastern shore seaside all had "black anchors" (mercs) and they ran the hell out of them in tough conditions for OB's: high salt and low water. And back then there was no such thing as flushing a motor (nor did guys blow-dry their hair. Just sayin').

Don't know Atwood.

Although I agree about upgrading your HP you don't get much money for old motors but they are great to have. I'd keep the Evinrude; clean it out and stand it up. Someday you'll put it on a small second boat for the children, etc.

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury?

I don't necessarily think the older motors are better. It's just that they are MUCH cheaper to work on, easier to work on, and have much less plastic parts to break. Strangely enough, newer motors (speaking of pre 2000 outboards less than 40hp) have basically identical lower units as the older ones, and the powerheads and carbs are virtually the same as well. Newer motors have fancier electronics that are more expensive to fix and when they go out you're stranded. Older OMC motors from the 50s that I like so much are noisier and don't have shallow drive or slip clutches in the props. Those 2 things are the only negatives i can think of about them. I love how they have very few plastic parts, and when they do have plastic parts they're made of good plastic and there's a reason for it to be there. The reason I don't like the plastic in newer motors is that it becomes brittle over time and during cold weather, and is really easy to break, and because they put it where it shouldn't be. Were it not for the plastic carb parts and such, I'd say the 90's OMC motors were the best ever built.
So, if you don't have a lot of dough, go with a 10-25hp johnson or evinrude from the 50's to the 90's, and you'll have a good motor if you don't mind putting a little work into it. The mercs are good motors, but require more specialized tools and skill to repair correctly. ALthough the mercury lower units from the 60s and 70's were super good when they were new, they are much harder to find in good condition on a merc than a johnson or evinrude because merc didn't go to stainless drive shafts until 1976. The merc lower units also require shims and are much harder to correctly set up than an OMC.
Probably more info than you wanted.... :)

The comment was TIC and referenced the age old FordChevy debate, not necessarily addressing the size of the OP's motors.

Irregardless......In my day all the "kids" took out their Dad's cars to pick up girls. Well, I picked up more girls in my boat than I ever did in the car.

It was a 1955 Wizard Super 10....

She was circa 1950 and there was never any rowing involved. (had a Rude by then)

Interestingly enough, had her out again just last weekend (the girl not the Rude)

LOL...actually she was just looking over my shoulder a few minutes ago!

WE all have a past and the best thing is that we both know the other's past.

The rest of the story is that SHE was picked up in the boat as well. She was the LAST one though! Fourty One years as the first mate, and we still go to the same secluded island.

yeah I was wondering what kind of ladies would be impressed by a 1972 7.5 anything on a 14ft alum Sea Nymph? LOL, luckly I already have a good wife and kids that like to go out on the boat but not sure they are impressed. it is more like dad wants to go out I guess we will go with him. ha ha ha

I have noticed the Mercury is way more expensive and harder to work on. Evinrude seems much simplier. I took it out this weekend with the Evinrude and it ran perfect no issues. I got to find a 25hp takes forever to cross the lake with the 9.5.
thanks guys this site is a great.

Re-read post #6. Not safe with a 25 on that hull.

I would like to see you fit the cowl from a 115 Evinrude on the exact same 115 Mercury

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury?

My take on mercury vs. evinrude/johnson

In the 1950s and 60s Mercury was a far better engineered motor. Better gear case, better scavanging, better props, better fuel economy. That changed a bit in 1969 when OMC brought their big engines into the 20th century with gear housings and props that were more or less on par with merc. When the V6s were intoduced in the mid 70s Merc again to the lead. Thru the 80s into the nineties it was neck and neck. When the DFI came out I thoght OMC was ahead of merc. Well I was wrong on that one.

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury?

Why is it the omc boys hate us merc boys so bad? Is it because Merc advertises as fastest on the water?

omc guys dont hate merc guys!!! we just shake our heads when we tow one 2 miles back to the dock.....and dont even get offered a cold beer for the half hour tow! ;)

We don't hate yous guys. We just accept that you're faster.....and understand that the reason is that Karl cheated and sold motors that had more HP than what the cowl said.

Moot point anyway. The days of the HP race are long over. Evinrude and Mercury.....RIP.

Actually, I own 7 Mercs myself.....they are all hanging on the wall in a place of reverence.....LOL.
