paint/gelcoat advice needed

paint/gelcoat advice needed

weather and more car trouble holding up deck install. been prepping livewell, baitwell and seat stands. when everything is installed i plan to do a final coat (white) over the entire inside and the cap. the boat was originally green on top/inside, white outside. the green looks like...well let's just say it has to go. what do i have to do to prep the old surfaces for application of...and what should i use to cover the old green finish. i know i can buy pigment and add it to the layup resin but something is telling me thats not what should be done. whatever the final coat is, it will be going over the new poly of the deck/tabbing and the dog butt ugly 40 year old green original finish. i would like to do all of the prep on the wells and seat stands before install so i'm not sanding in tight spaces any more than i have to. 80 grit everything and acetone wipedown?

weekend plan...

weekend plan...

stage is set for deck install. did a test fit and realized the deck height is 1/4 in higher at the bow. drain hole for livewell had to be relocated.
held things up a bit. wifey bought me a memory card for the camn damera so the pic issue is no longer an issue. i'd spell out the plan but it never works out so the pics will tell the tale. supply shopping tomorrow and sanding add-ons for paint (gelcoat) thurs and fri. the wait is killin me.

gelcoat question...

gelcoat question...

after weighing my options, i've deciced to gelcoat the interior. at least until i can spring for good paint. wifey wants a textured finish for traction. i can get a gallon of white gelcoat w/wax for $60. the problem i'm trying to contend with is the possible need for two coats. if i mix sand with the gelcoat, i cant sand the wax off to do a second coat. best idea i've come up with is to add sand to a batch of resin, apply, then gelcoat over the sanded resin coat. even then, if i need to recoat, the sand will be a problem. then there is the issue of a uv protectant. if i need a clearcoat, i have to remove the wax to apply it and again, i'm sanding sand. i'm stumped. any suggestions???anybody???

A gallon of gel did my entire deck. You can get a non slip additive, but I just used a roller with a bigger nap and make it kinda bumpy. Its non slip and it looks great (i think) textured. You can get it unwaxed from US composites, right there in FL for 42 and wax for 2.25 I thinned my middle coat at about 5% with styrene because I knew I wouldn't have enough. SOme might advise against that, but it worked for me. I think Gelcoat is better than paint. Stronger etc...

Re: after thought...

I would add the sand or non slip in the fire coat. will be a little lighter under your feet.

Re: update...

Progress is always good. I made a little on the trailer but no pics yet. I like the PVC under the deck idea.

Re: update...

Thanks. wifey tripping on the wiring inspired me to fix the issue before she tripped and hurt herself or ripped the fuse block out of the helm. more soon.

Re: update...

The fire coat is when you take a bunch of acetone, rub in onto the deck and light it on fire to burn off dirt and contaminants.

:p
JOKING!!! It was a typo, I meant first coat.
DONT ACTUALLY DO THAT!! acetone is very flammable lol

and explosive...makes potato guns everything they can be . i'm gonna experiment on scrap plywood til i figure it out. aiming for texture similar to the side of a cinder block. curious to see what waxed gelcoat looks like after it cures. how much sanding to remove wax. does it leave little dimples that have to be sanded. after product and technique testing, I'll know what to do to the boat.

Re: update...

A lot depends on your application. I would probably use sand to get that texture... My bumps are more exaggerated..
A light sanding will remove the wax... I BELIEVE (don't quote me on this) that mine recommended a 120 grit sanding.

texture...

probably gunna sand a batch of unwaxed and go over it with waxed...if the coverage is what i think it will be. gotta get past the pre-wire with the pvc and the deck will be done. I know it's the sole, not the deck but sole still sounds wierd. can't wait to shoot/post more pics. my camera takes huge pics. may resize or post as attachments. might post a few thursday while wifey is at work.

Re: texture...

I'm a little confused. Unwaxed resin stays tacky, you don't need to sand between coats -- it will gum up your sander really quickly

Re: texture...

1st coat unwaxed with sand added, no sanding, no wipedown...2nd coat unwaxed, no sanding no wipedown...3rd (final) coat, waxed...done except sanding/faring/buffing non-sanded areas.
