I agree except for the transom height. I hope I can put a modern mtor on this thing. I saw the pics in your thread Bob but your transom is alot higher than mine.

I think this thing is a 1963 Starcraft stardust. Judging by my measurments and the brochure it looks like it and its the only one I could find with a 16inch transom that matches. So I plan on building up the transom to accomadate a newer motor. So I finally found a bigger starcraft to bad its the sissy model.

Jimdd810, glad to see another one of these thats still alive! I just completed a total powerhead overhaul complete with new crank & all! Still on the break-in mix. I wish I could help with the starcraft, but mine is a 1968 De Soto aluminum 13'6" & my son have a ball with it & the ole evinrude! I wish you & your daughter the most pleasant of voyages & many fishes!:)

Thanks Scanman. That ole Evinrude is going to keep you happy for alot of years. Ive got 3 of 15hp of different years. I have a merc to put on the sea king but Id rather go with an evinrude or Johnson. It will be fun. Ive redone 5 boats so far and this will be my first aluminum redo. I can tell ya im never going back to fiberglass. They are fine but Im tired of them. I redid a 30 foot carver and spent tons of money luckily I broke even. That boat i did with the intention of selling. This one Im doing for me and will keep it.

Getting started on the tear down. Removed old controls and steering. Removed end caps of of the transom and started drilling out rivets and removing the 30 or so screws holding on the splashwell. The splash well will be the test peice for painting options. Since the paint is not in that bad of shape I might sand and paint over what is there, covering the bare spots with self etching primer. Plan to have the old transom out this weekend if I dont go fishing or hunting [Bow season opened today]. Got another set of hands to help out from my daughters friend. These girls are serious about there work!

Just a couple of pics of the crew working. The beard is for hunting season and the little cut is from a stack pully that fell off while I was under a garden tractor. Could of used a couple of stiches but Ill survive. Besides I have the keys to the ambulance lol.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

got alot accomplished today. Removed the transom and floor. Every one of the bolts going through the transom was bent. Got most of them out no problem but had to grind a few off. I was very surprised to find out a few things from the tear down so far. First is the fact that there was a plastic fork and a ziplock bag under the floor. I dont think this is the first floor in the boat. 2nd the transom was made from what looks like a versalamb beam and had the 2 rounded ends nailed or screwed on the top. I could be wrong.
The foam under the floor looked really good and the only wet spots where in the bilge area. This boat has been sitting behind the shop where the auction was for who knows how long so I was surprised to see the floor in such good shape. The transom wasnt to bad either except for the rounded ends that fell off when I pulled it out. The center was in really good shape.
The next step is to get it completley clean inside and fill it to check for leaks.
here are some pics.

couple more pics. The floor also seemed really good/ Dosnt show well in the pics but I will be replacing it any way/ By the way it is a one peice floor and the edges are beveled. I dont know where I am going to get a peice like that. I guess Im going to have to do it in 2 sections.

Iboats needs to add a spell checker.

We did have a member who found wood big enough for 1 piece floor. No idea how. Your floor being in great shape is nice for making a template. (FireFox has a built in spell checker)

Check with one of your local specialty lumber yards, I can buy different types of ply up to 14 foot wide and 24 feet long here locally..and actually they are not as expensive as you might think.

Ill work on my spelling.

I hope you didn't take my comment as a criticism. I was responding to your comment about iboats needing a spell checker.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

ezmobee dont worry about it, no offense taken. If that was criticism then my wife has been over doing it for the last 16 years lol.

So the question for today is... I need to extend the height of the transom by 4 inches to fit a long shaft motor. My plan is to make the transom wood 4 inches higher and epoxy the whole thing then use the aluminum transom extending brackets just to make sure it is strong. The only concern I have is the aluminum on the boat will not reach the top of the transom anymore. Do you guys think I'm on the right track?

I'd go with the homemade jack plate idea before I'd bother with modifying the boat. That's just me though.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

I plan on either using that or some other setup. The question I have is since I have to cut out and fabricate the new transom wood is it ok to extend it the 4 inches I need, the jackplate fabricated or bought will give me the strength I need. Just worried about the wood being exposed. The wood is exposed on the inside any way (somewhat). I plan on making sure I wont have to do this again for a long time.
