Re: First Boat Project

Got all the sanding done on the hull finaly

CIMG4757.jpg

We had a heck of a time getting the hull into the garage, but we did it. We pulled it out into the drive way then pushed it into garage when we were done to keep leaves off it.

We got the first coat on the hull and painted the white parts on the cap.

We plan on ordering the seats today from Veada. The problem is the site says it could take up to 8 weeks to get them so we are going to do a phone order today and explain to them that the boat needs to be done by June 10, the day we graduate so maybe they can expedite it.

Going with two fishing seats and a bench seat, all matching. Going to cost $460 with no tax and free shipping. White with red and blue accents (sticking with the theme).

A video of some of the work we have done including some painting and installing the carpet:

Looks like you are making nice progress....but you had better hurry if you are going to make June 10th!

Re: First Boat Project

Seriously! We are taking the outboard into a local shop tomorrow for a tune up and to have the impeller replaced. We have been using any free time at all working on it but its still going to be close.....

Re: First Boat Project

I'm going to do a big update tonight.

But I have a quick question: For the two tow eyes for the back of the transom (going to be used to tow a tube or a skier) can we just use heavy duty U-bolts from like HD or do we have to use ones especially made for this?

Thanks in advance!

The ones I took out (and broke) had two bolts. Is the one you gave a link for with only one bolt going to okay to tow with?

And, use a backer inside the hull. Ideally, a piece of stainless would be best, but something strong so the stress is spread out over a larger, flatter area (learned this the hard way of course, lol)

Re: First Boat Project

So I’m back…again.

I didn’t fall off the edge of the earth at all, but as you can probably guess life got in the way in a major. I last posted very near the end of my high school career. Finals took over my free time along with getting the boat in a condition that I could show off for my presentation on the last day of school. Then I graduated from High School, got two jobs, worked seven days a week for the entire summer, and then started college at Colorado School of Mines studying Petroleum Engineering. I’ve finally found some time to update all you on my boat.

Well we got it basically done in time for our presentation at school (recall that it was my friend and Is’ senior project). Now it wasn’t, and still isn’t, 100% done, I would say 90% done. When we took it to school the outboard was mounted, but not hooked up. Most everything else was done, though. Besides the motor, all that was left to do was a few more cosmetic things like 5200 the splash well drain in, connecting the speaker in the lounge seat, those sorts of things. At this point we really hadn’t touched the motor, besides the starter which was the first thing we did to the boat.

Re: First Boat Project

Please go back one page to see my first new post in some time...

Towards the end of the summer, I took some time off to go camping with my friend and his family at a reservoir. His dad has a 1969 Keeton jet boat. Multiple trucks were going up and it was suggested we bring our boat up too for the hell of it. You might remember we got the OB running when we first got it, all we had to do was get the starter rebuilt, and then it started right up. So we spent a day connecting the motor all up, loaded it up with the required safety items, and threw on my Minn Kota 34 lb. thrust trolling motor (we had also upgraded to a 12 gallon gas tank). I brought a pretty respectable took box with us as well. The trailer towed great! We got up to the lake no problem. The next day we took her down to the water and she floated! Half the battle right? We tried for a good half an hour to get her started with no luck. She turned over nice and strong, but we don?t think she was getting enough fuel. We tried spraying the carbs multiple times. The more we sprayed in, the longer she would stay started, but never longer than 20 sec. So we took her back out. That night we fooled around with the controls (which had come loose in the process) and looked at the fuel pump. We tried cleaning the fuel filter with clean fuel, but the next day we had the same issues. So now we are just waiting for summer again when we will both be back home in California so we can start working on her. I just got a parts catalogue, because of course all of the online parts catalogues go back to 1968 while mine is a 1967:facepalm:, and it looks like a new fuel pump assembly will run $66. I?m going to start a thread on that in the out boards thread of course. What we really want to do is take it to a mechanic and have them do it just due to a lack of experience.

Re: First Boat Project

I wondered what happened to you guys! Looks like the boat turned out really nice! Good choice on the major by the way, the companies around here pay bit $$$ for people with degrees like you are pursuing.

HI jet. Glad you're back. The boat looks great. Here are some handy links to get that Big Twin spinning like a top. There's one to a parts catalog for your motor, some much cheaper ($20) fuel pumps (same mikuni brand), and an all around tune up links. I used to have one of these old gems. Well worth the effort.

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/mikunifuelpump1.php ( you might need a slightly larger pump, but check this site. The prices are only about 1/3 of what the other guys want for the same part)

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks for all the links guys! I'm getting really excited to get back home and get her splashed!

Of course I've already found another boat, haha, and have found two more people who want to do it with me.

Saw this on c-list: 17ft Skagit Express Cruiser 1959, he wants $1200, but I would never pay that, I was thinking more like $900. The description says:

"17ft Skagit Express Cruiser 1959
Johnson VRO 70 runs good (Oil injector as been disconnected so fuel must be pre-mixed.)
Recent tune-up & impeller service.
Needs TLC"

So of course the question is what kind of TLC, haha. I'm not looking to get myself into another ground up resto this summer, but If I can find something that just needs cosmetic work and some minor motor work for a decent price I'll go for it. Also, like I said, I have two other friends who want to go in on it also so that should make it easy on my wallet also.

There is an owners club for this boat as well, and they have some great examples of these boats restored.

Re: First Boat Project

So i had a quick question about working on my outboard (I know i should put this is the other forum but i just need a few word response). I've decided to try and tinker with it myself, and I know now the Seloc service manual is no good, so when looking for the OMC manual to show/ help me do repairs on it an i looking for the "Service Manual"?

Also with this help me rebuild the carb and rebuild/replace the fuel pump?

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks for the quick response! This random 75 deg weather in Colorado is making me boat crazy all of a sudden; all I want to do is get back home and get her runnin'!

Is there any benefit to buying the owners manual too?
