Apart from giving your lower unit a mild pressure wash, muffs like these wont work on that motor as there are no water intakes on the sides of the housing, the intake is under the cav plate in front of the exhaust outlet. There should be plate (water bypass) on the port side of the motor above the cav plate, does it have a thread in it to attach a fitting? If not, get your hands on a large barrel, filler up and do it the best way.

Great project you've got there. Very cool old motor. A number of guys here have used Rustoleum with good success. How is your deck and transom? Any rot? You'll probably need a few more of those red tanks to keep that 80HP beast fed

I'll take more close up pics of the lower unit and post them around noon today to get more feedback on how to get water through the system.

And ya, we plan on buying another 6 gal. tank, we are going to store them under the rear bench seat, one on starboard side, the other on the port side, then the battery in the middle. Is there any way to connect the two tanks?

Water intake is where i described previously, in front of the exhaust outlet which is above the prop. The hole you think might be an intake isnt because its too high. There is no thread on that port side plate either so the easiest option for you is probably going to be a barrel.

Absolutely, You just tilt the motor up as high as possible put the barrel under the motor then tilt it back down, fill up the barrel with water and start er up.

I'm just sayin...

No need to pull the motor, you may have to trim the barrel up the top to make it easier to get the motor in there but it will still work, the water level in it only really needs to be half a foot or so above the cav plate when the motor is down. A plastic barrel would be ideal.

Cross your fingers first! lol
I use SeaFoam mixed in the gas. Pick up a can auto zone, the stuff really works on cleaning the inners up. Don't over rev it and keep the water flowing. Good Luck

Took the windsheild off today and did some more looking. Found a soft spot on the floor

Start by reading up a little first, do you know how long its been since its been serviced or run? If you dont know or its been more than say a year or two, go to the johnnyrude repair forum and check out the sticky "top secret file" on "its been sitting two years, what to do". There is also information in there on starting procedures.

The guy i bought it from says it starts, but "the cabs need to be cleaned" (i'm going to rebuild them)

He told me if i brought a battery he would start it for me, but the battery i brought was dead. We are buying a marine battery some time this week to try and start it.

Depending when you plan on using this boat would decide(for me) if I needed a new marine battery right now. If it isn't going to really be used for a year I would just use your car or truck battery for now and wait till your ready to purchase the new boat battery.

So im starting to consider painting the hull. If the outboard is taken off along with the top section, can we just slide the hull off the trailer then tilt it over? Or would the side we tilt it over on be damaged? (I would probably only do this if we have to replace the floor)

Read this from start to finish. You will LEARN a lot about what you are going to need to do to complete your boat rebuild. A lot of your questions will be answered in this thread. Micks did an excellent job rebuilding his runabout which is very similar to yours.

If you are just going to run it for the sake of it now i would agree with UBN on the battery situation, dont buy a marine one yet if just going to sit for awhile, you may have no choice though? Did the PO indicate when the impeller/pump was last serviced, that would be one thing to really look out for when you manage to fire it up.

If you do end up removing the cap don't try to do it with the outboard still on it will only get in the way and complicate matters a ton. If cap removal is the case build a stand (plans on this site) put the outboard on the stand then proceed with the cap removal.

And no he didnt say anything about that but there are some newer parts in the engine so it looks like someone did some work on it as some point.

ok thanks! the funny part is the biggest issue for us right now is finding a large enough barrel to start the engine in, it needs to be at least 23" wide (diameter).
