Re: First boat Resto in progress " advice needed"

Well thank you Sprintst, it kindove reminds me of window tinting in a way. Well I found out the PL for concrete isnt gonna work, it is too runny. I think I will just try my best again with the pl premium. I would just make up the peanut butter but I dont wanna use that much epoxy right now.

Re: First boat Resto in progress " advice needed"

OHHHHH NOOOO! I came home from work today to find somthing that I definetelly didnt want to see! A very large crack right where my drain plug was going to go! I kindove figured somthing like this might happen. Why do you guys think this happened? Is it because I closed it in with the freezer bag and board " so that it wouldnt drip down"? I will tell ya one thing, all I used was epoxy and thickened it with Aerosil- Cabosil but that was all that I used, should I have used chopped fiberglass strands in it also? I have some, and the glass bubbles but I figured I would not need them for this but it cracked so????? I am stuck. I am now clear out of Cabosil so I will have to order more but I am trying to figure out why it cracked? anyone got any ideas? I am thinking maybe cause I blocked the hole off but if it is this hard what if it cracks at a later time. that would also be a disaster like when I am trying to drill the hole for the plug sleeve, Arrr

I worked on the very front stringers tonight they look like they will work pretty well. now if I could just figure out how to fill the drain plug hole without it cracking and without it cracking when I drill it for the sleeve. Anyone have any helpful hints for this noob? I am guessing I need to add the chopped fiberglass strands? but I wanna know for sure?

Anyone know where this thread is?
I did my transom like Friscoboater. Cut the transom out around the drain hole and fill it with peanutbutter mix. That way no water ever touches the wood of the transom in that area, mine was mush around the drain hole.

If you don't want it to crack you need to add some fibers.

Re: First boat Resto in progress " advice needed"

Well its been a long break and I am going to get started on the boat again, I hope to get it completed by the end of this summer! I have not had time to work on it much this summer but am bout to get goin again, this is not a race to me as I have another small fishing boat anyways, just got back from a 2 week vacation to Canada "Lake of the woods" for a fmaily fishing trip we had a real good time fishing was slow due to heat but it was a ton of fun as usual Sioux Narrows is a great place! Since my last post I have got my front stringers PL'ed into place and I did repair the drain hole section and let me tell ya it turned out PERFECT! I didn't drill the hole just used the old metal sleeve as a mold and used some plastic that the epoxy wouldn't stick to and the hole ended up smooth as glass, sure beat drilling and worrying about chipping. I did just as you guys said and added the fibers so I kindoved learned the hard way on that but it turned out great I bet it will seal like a champ, in all honesty probably don't even need a sleeve but I will install one anyways. I am going to try to get the transom tabbed and glassed today! Question= I am thinking this is not nessassary but I have been wondering this since does the sole and transom need to be glassed completely? I am sure you guys think this is taking me awhile and it is but like I said it is no race to me as I have another small boat for fishing so it keeps me entertained, then I get back to tall grass and my wheel horse breaks down while trying to mow, it is always something! Today my poor grandpa 85 yrs. old had to have a ruptured appendix removed they were worried cause he was on blood thinners and was trying to get his blood thickened enough to do the operation but I just got word the operation is finished and went well but of coarse he is still under and not breathing on his own yet but thinks he will be shortly so please pray for him! Thanks guys

Your resto job looks great man! I just read all 4 pages and learned allot from you. I am getting back to my own restoration also, I had put it off for the last year due to finances. But I have decided to sell my cycle to get up much needed funds for my lil project boat. I will be starting a thread and needing much advice myself. We are so blessed to have all these wonderful friends with lots of knowledge to help us. I do hope your grampa is doing well. I will pray for both of you.

Why is this jbcurt00? I of coarse believe you but with epoxy being previously applied it cant be for water proofing? So it must be for structural purposes? how many 12oz. layers of cloth for the sole and transom is recommended? The transom was previously CSM and poly and didn't seem like much was on it when I cut it out towards the center of transom anyway, the edges were sortove thick.

Epoxy is stronger then poly, but just as WOG suggested wrapping the stringers in 12oz cloth when using epoxy, you need to treat the transom & deck the same. For lack of a better descriptor: Continuous envelope of both epoxy & fiberglass cloth.
