Re: First New Boat Purchase - Single Female Help

the smartest thing you have done so far is put "single female" in the subject; you will get way more help from the "gentlemen" here. Whether you are or not!

Beat me to it and its funny to see how many replies she has gotten!! Then again maybe she isn't a she.

so what was the major differences between the 2 brothers?

I think its the seating, tho im not sure couse they both have back to back seats, but someone could have moded. Go to the starcraft forum, on top there is a brochure thread, click on 64 and theres a pic of them both together, but the pics are kinda grainy.

Really!

As I said before all female. What girls can't like boats?
My ex had a 30ft Chris craft and had a charter service and he is the main reason I love boats. I drove the boat and ran the loran (hope I spelled the correctly) and he took care of the lines. We fished Lake Michigan and were out of Michigan city harbor. I miss this........the boat that is!

Go witht he tin boat LuAnn. I live in the Joliet area, the waters we cruise and fish all have lots of stumps and rocks, the rivers are notorious for sandbars and rock croppings, like the Kankakee in your area, it also runs through here. You'll love the simplicity of maintaining a tinny with the JonnyRude on it.

Not sure of your location, but here in Wisconsin, that would be a $700-800 rig at best.

Now, if it had a newer motor, say 1980 or newer, where you would be getting electronic ignition, and power tilt and trim, and a better trailer, then it might go for $1800.

Also, gonna be tough to find someone to work on an engine that old, so if you aren't doing your own repairs, best to find a slightly newer motor.

Here are a rig I came across today.

nice rig, but the seats don't match the boat.

Seems like used boat prices depend on the area you are in. What is reasonable in one region may be high in another. Fiberglass boats seem to have moresex appeal than tin boats, but also seem to be more involved to repair. Outboard on either is the same, compression and previous maintenance make all the difference. Almost all older boats are going to require some type of project or repair. Maybe not right away but soon. You have to decide how much of a project you are willing to get into. If you haven't already look through some of the restoration threads to get yourself familiar with what people go through and get into.Weak transoms can be just the tip of the iceberg. Good luck and happy hunting.

I also vote for the aluminum boat, much easier, cheaper, and quicker to work on. The transom is a pretty easy fix, and if it does leak that's easy to fix too.

I personally wouldn't trust the fiberglass boat, we see so many people get ripped of buying older fiberglass boats on this site. You can give them a spit polish and cover up rot with a new sheet of plywood and some carpet and make them look wonderful, but in reality they're a rotten pile under a coat of make-up.

Even if the aluminum boat needs new decking and a transom it'll only be 3 or $400, if the fiberglass boat needs restoring it could easily cost $2000 or more plus many man/woman hours of dirty itchy work.

Take a look around the iboats restoration forum to get an idea of the work involved between the 2 boats should they need it.

Didn't realize there were so many fishermen on the forum. Casting for photos, trolling for location, spinning for phone numbers.

OP may not need to buy a boat after all.

Re: First New Boat Purchase - Single Female Help

If it is in really good shape, then $1300 may be reasonable. It looks like 60s or 70s vintage boat. It actually looks pretty good, thought it is hard to tell from the photos. A couple of boat specific comments. If that is marine vinyl on the floor, then that won't be original (the interior doesn't look original to me).. This could be really good news....or not. If there was simply a carpeting replacement, then the floor may still be original underneath it. If the owner says he or she replaced the floor - check and see if the entire floor and foam underneath it was removed and replaced (that would be good news). If, however, the PO simply put plywood over the top of the old one, then they have simply covered up some major problems, and I would avoid this like the plague.

As for the trailer - was it in an accident? It looks like there is a significant deformation to the main bar of the trailer. That could be a real concern. I would be very hesitant to use this until a mechanic had inspected it and I had test towed it. You may need to replace that bar for safe towing.

Re: First New Boat Purchase - Single Female Help

I'm sure I can detect rot if someone can tell me how to look for it? Perhaps I should have him take the motor off and look at bolt holes? Sure like the boat but will proceed with caution!!
Does anyone know what the standard motor was on this year boat? if I had to guess it wasn't this motor.

Tap all over the transom with a hammer. If the sound changes by the bolt holes, move on to a new boat or make a offer based on rebuilding the transom.

I looked at the boat on Tuesday, was looking at a utility trailer 2 blocks away, and took the time to check out the boat.
Hull, floor, transom are solid, carpet is just laying over the original vinyl floor which had wear.

THe trailer: thats the way the tongue is made on a Spartan trailer.

her is the write up on the 1964 StarCraft Seamist for your info.

About this 1964 Starcraft seamist Runabout
1964 Starcraft seamist,Great 1964 Starcraft Seamist classic. In very good condition. Wind shield in excellent condition, newer marine carpet, (light blue) wiring in great shape, dash is nice, everything works, new light switch, bilge pump, trolling motor battery hookup and box. Modern cable steering upgrade for safety, retained original steering wheel in great shape. Floor is like new, may have been replaced at one point with treated wood. 30 pound thrust Minnkota trolling motor included, used maybe twice. Seats need to be recovered, but frames and springs are in great shape. Hull is in very good shape rivets are tight no leaks, boat has no rot in it at all, was garaged all its life.Area under bow is open for storage. The engine is a 60hp, 1965 Johnson that originally came with the boat. It runs like a top, looks to have very low hours after careful inspection. The following work has been done in the past two seasons as preventive maint., rebuilt carb, rebuilt fuel pump, replaced water pump, cleaned and inspected magneto and rotor, adjusted throttle and shift linkage. Installed Boysen reed valves to improve low speed running, these older engine designs didn't like it to much. New spark plugs at the end of last season. New fuel hose. Two original steel 6 gallon tanks one 3 gallon plastic. Two props, one new the other is useable, but could stand to be repaired. Compression is excellent. will do test for buyer if so desired. Starter battery is one year old, large interstate. The boat comes with dock ropes, two anchors and ropes, life vests, fire extinguisher, compass. Humming bird depth finder and engine manual. The trailer tows very well, old gator trailer, needs paint, tires are both newer, spare, guide on bunks

See any thing in the language I should be concerned about? So many boats to many choices. I just love it. LuAnn
