Re: Florida Get Together 2010

i like camping, but Sylvia does not. with the cost of camping, and her in the hotel, i could almost rent a cabin. which would be easier than loading all the camping stuff, then having to clean it when home.

Good start on 2010. Wondering how I missed out?
Back surgery went well, and now am pain free:D Felt so good I went and got a new tat.... check it out!

Nice ink! So, Andre, I am sure it was a misunderstanding. I think the last we heard you were not yet under the knife and in pretty bad shape. I would love to have you working with us on this committee....do I have a second for his nomination??

Re: Florida Get Together 2010

I'm also new here, and my toon is currently in dry dock (okay, dry driveway) and in need of a lot of work before we get it in the water, but if I can help recon the Homosassa/Crystal river area, that's easy enough- I'm in Inverness, about 15 miles east of there.

I can check on facilities, put eyes on places, take pics of boat launches, and talk to people face to face if it helps anywhere. In fact, I'll be in Homosassa on Saturday morning.

I have also been looking a lot online and the whole Lake Harris area looks like it's the bomb!! I can't wait to get things rolling (floating) and start exploring over there.

I looked up Yellow Jacket State Park(Old Town Fl. 32680). Real nice spot, and have allot to offer. But for me it's over 200 miles away and close to 300 for CheapboatKev.

It does look nice, cabins are a little pricey, which is what I would use, never was much on tent camping, had a little coleman popup camper at one time, like a/c much better. I wonder what is in the are for motels that may be less expensive.

Hey there Nolan..we were thinking the same thing. Maybe Barb and I can make a run up to the neighborhood and look some. It will be a little shorter trip for ya'll, but quite a haul for Kev and Andre....

Re: Florida Get Together 2010

300 miles aint sooo bad..Heck I am considering a 1,900 mile round trip next year for a Starcraft get together we named Tin-Stock, in VA!

I would do 300 in a heartbeat to hang out with you guys and actually have my boat with us this time!

I do agree the cabins are a bit $$..May have to save some nickles..lol
Hotels in the area also would be a consideration, however it seems they (yellowjkt) like to nickle & dime you for "visitor fees", launching fees (I think I read that..).

Oh and the firewood ban (no outside firewood) stinks!
They will happily sell you their "approved disease free" wood?

I went up to Yellow Jacket today and checked it out, they were really nice and I would rate the park an 8 on the 1-10 scale......they are pretty much the only game in town, trust me when I say you better off in a tent that any of the 2 local 40 year old roach motels...lol :D

I was gonna post up some pics, but the pics on the website are just about what is there in real life.

While I basically live next to Crystal Isle ( Crystal River ) and that would be my first choice. I think this place was definately better than LG, but there are a couple of things that bummed me out :

We spoke to the lady in the office ( very helpful ) and a guy worker on a tractor, asked the same questions to both of them and both made some of the same comments that make you go hummm

water and possible air temps in April = can be cold
chance of flooding from early spring rains up northern parts of river = possibly
group discount = NO ( only $ 2 off RV sites only )
ramp conditions : limerock/dirt ( actually just the bank ) evidence a lot of guys spin tires and get stuck, they have a tractor to help drag you out, but it wasn't a paved ramp.
Docks area is nice, I should have taken a pic of the setup, but camera was in the truck, its a basic long 50 + foot ... " T " dock with galv metal dividers between each slip with a roller bumper on the end ??? but you will need a ton of fenders to tie up, also there is NO no wake zone, while I was on the dock getting rocked by wake I noticed this....should make launching fun too
fees for firewood and Ice are hefty, there is no camp store or anything either

well if those issues are not a huge concern, the pavilion use is Free and not an issue keeping it all weekend for large events, the cooking area-kitchen facilities at the pavilion are awesome, gas grill , extra gas burners, sinks, tables, and the pavilion is about twice the size of Lake G's pavilion and equipped with ceiling fans and lights.....
site are really nice soft grass, but only about 15 tent camping sites ( with H20 and elec ), she said no tents in the RV area, large pets are fine, cabins are nice, but they said they frown on 2 families each with pets sharing cabins ??? WTH ??
pool area is awesome, nice deck area covered with lots of tables + chairs.... I think there is a hot tub, that solves the swimming issue, bath house and showers were 9 + on the ratings scale, but there are only 2 of them ?...park is only a couple hundred yds long, the longest walk is from the tent camping area to the ramp maybe 200 yds, lots of shade trees and wildlife

this place is out in the middle of no where ( BTW no cell phone recept. anywhere ), even if you go back 9 miles north to Old Town there still isn't much, 2 gas station with fuel about .20 cent a gal higher, No real hotels or restaurants, so you almost have to stay at the resort or drive in for the day from Chiefland ( and there really isn't much there either ).......for the location of this place its about 2.5 hours north from Tampa if that helps ( HWY US 19 is 60-65 MPH speed limit most of the way, except thru 2-3 small towns the speed drops....

I think more people would come, stay put and do the Friday to Sunday afternoon thing, given the remoteness of this location, but having been the LG last time this place has it beat hands down, but the comforts like back at LG ( Sleep Inn, Walmart and restaurants ) just are not there......I have a few pics, camera is out in the car I can post up tomorrow.....BTW I can get more info from Crystal Isles on Monday too, did I say that would be my first choice ...........lol

EDITING TO ADD PICS OF YELLOW JACKET

Re: Florida Get Together 2010

Excellent Info. rentprop1 Your right about better than LG. Bummer on not having anything close like a good store or good hotel. That might be hard on some folks, but they do have cabins. What's the deal with not sharing cabins:mad: I'm all about shacking up with another couple to save some coin. We can work on that.Don't like that thing about no phone service in case something were to go bad, radios and land lines can fix that. On the bright side the wife and I have traveled farther for a cold beer and good company:D
Just an idea guys..... maybe we can do a pole? pick the top 2 or 3 spots and put it to a vote.

Either way I'm in!

"Just an idea guys..... maybe we can do a pole? pick the top 2 or 3 spots and put it to a vote.' this is the purpose of the steering committee. get all the good info the members can get us, then present the best of the best, to the members.

member feedback will help us tremendously. it would also be nice to have info for the 2011, so the decision could be made by the attending members at 2010 meeting.

i agree where ever it is i am going to be there. if i have to ride Greyhound.

What's the deal with not sharing cabins:mad:

the way she made it sound; sharing cabins was OK, some sleep up to 6-8 people, but she frowned upon people with pets sharing, she gave and example of 2 families each with a big dog sharing is a no-no...the owners of the resort have pets : dogs and cats and seem friendly, they just don't want the place messed up !

looks like I getting the toon out today, will get some info of Crystal Isle :D

Re: Florida Get Together 2010

Yesterday I stopped over at Crystal Isles to get the info : did I mention would be my first choice...lol...I said in the other post that Yellow Jacket beat out Lake Griffin, but this place is kinda like a resort where you can camp-dock-fish-swim all just off the beat and path. This place takes the cake In my honest Opinion. :D

http://www.rvonthego.com/Crystal-Isle.html

above is the link to the website, check it out for pics and info. The manager said she could offer us a rally rate for sites, so it would be somewhere around $ 30 per night for water front sites most with docks. The resort is really nice and its almost like your not camping in the woods like at LG, there is a pool,. horseshoes, volleyball and hot tub.

Cabins are nice about $ 90 bucks a night before rally discount, but there is a 2 night min on cabins, the mgr said, she would be able to discount, just could not provide figures at this time, but it would not be anything like the site discount ( rally rate ) she was giving on the other sites ( its about $ 15 off per night from the reg rate of $ 47 and change ).

Basically you don't have to stay at the tent area ( which is only primitive camping only - no h2o or elec ) you can put up a tent at any regular RV site which have the hooks ups. Pets are OK at sites but NO PETS IN CABINS.....another wrinkle if you don't stay at a site with a dock, you have to pull the boat out on the trailer each night and park in the boat parking area....they are strict about this she said.....

There is no pavilion but huge umbrellas and a club house ( currently under renovation ) but she said for a small fee of like $ 25 we can rent the club house for the weekend for group cooking ( its inside and A/C ) has kitchen area.

For those coming in for the day Ft. Island Trail park is about 1 mile down the road and free to launch and park.

The Park is 200 yds down a canal to the Crystal River, if you head back into Kings Bay ( 10 min ride ) there are places on the water to dine and areas to gather and raft up and swim, given the timing the some Manatee should still be here early in the am and late in the day. If you head out to the gulf its about a 10 min ride to the flats and open water ( not really deep ).
Here are a few pics of Crystal Isle resort :

cabin area

.
boat ramp area
extrapics039.jpg

.
waterfront sites with docks and umbrella areas
extrapics042.jpg

extrapics043.jpg

.
pros and cons :

Pros :
the location is more central and close to a larger city for last minuet items, shopping, restaurants and other events.
Rally Rate price option a big plus !
resort is pretty empty in April so we could get waterfront sites together
there are large cabins and smaller duplex's if you were thinking of sharing
swim with the manatees - waterfront dining
cons :
NO pets in cabins and 2 night minimum for cabin rental
if you don't get a waterfront site, must yank boat out each day
no outdoor pavilion, but inside club house available ( small fee )

thanks for reading.....Mark ( Rentprop1 )

p.s. I also added the pics from Yellow Jacket in above posts

Great job, Mark. Thanks for the pics and info. We had tried to make the trip up there this past weekend but did not. Your trip provided us with lots of information and of course some good pictures. Both of these are good sites to consider...

Re: Florida Get Together 2010

club house rate is Cheap, it cost me $32.00 to reserve the Pavilion, at LG, just for that day. like the idea of water front site, but looks hard to stake a tent in the concrete. Hilti Gun. guess we could set up in the grassy area.

closer to civilization. but Mapquest Aerial, looks like in a waterfront subdivision. or you have to go thru the subdivision to get to the river by boat. wish they had a site map on line, to see the lay out.
