Two weeks ago I posted about an overheating problem I was having with a VP 5.0 L Gxi-E. The raw water pump, impeller, thermostat, exhaust manifolds and risers, all hoses and fittings were replaced. He said hes gone from top to bottom checking and replacing any and everything that could be making the engine overheat. After all of that, I am still getting a temp. alarm. My mechanic and I took it out this past Friday morning and he checked the temp of just about every component imaginable on the engine with an IR gun. Everything was running cool. He said the only thing that was hotter than normal was the oil filter. He said hes never run across and oil filter feeling that hot before and said he didnt know if it was normal or not. He pulled the dip stick and the said the oil itself was cool. Has anyone encountered this before? He said he is going to replace the temp sender next. Would this trigger the alarm if its malfunctioning? Don provided a overheating diagnostic guide the last time I posted and me and the mechanic went over it and he said he performed all tests given and they lead nowhere. If anyone has any insight, I would love to hear what you have to say.

Thanks!

Hmmm new information, you said in your Other Thread that "It overheats when its throttled up on plane, but then the temperature comes right back down when you let off the throttle." which led me to believe you were seeing this happen on the gauge and not just the alarm.
If this overheat is just the alarm, and everything is actually staying cool, then you probably have a bad alarm switch causing the problem.

Well thats true, I only get the problem when its on plane. The gauge shows the temp is 225 or hotter and the alarm triggers after a few minutes. My mech. is changing out the alarm switch as we speak...I hope its as simple as that.

According to the mech, my model engine does not have an oil cooler.

IF the sender and alrm switch are not the problem...are there other things after all we have done to correct the problem that im missing?

First, Stop changing parts till you find out if something is wrong or not.

.

So your gauge is showing an overheat, and your alarm is saying overheat ?????
You just said the mechanic checked "Just About" everything on the engine and everything checked out cool. What didn't he check?
Did he check at the base of the temp sender while the alarm was sounding?
Did he check the exhaust risers near the a couple of the temp switches?

When exactly does the temp go up, does it happen just as you get on plane, or is it 5 minutes later?
Does it overheat at 3000 rpm, or 4000, or anytime on a plane?

The temp needle start moving within 10 seconds of the boat being on plane 3000 RPM. Once you throttle down off plane, the temp gauge comes right back down to normal. I watched him put th IR gun on the t-stat housing, raw water pump, exhaust risers. He climed into the compartment and checked something on the bottom of the motor...couldnt see exactly what he did. I touched the t-stat housing and risers and they were warm but not hot. Mech said if either of those were overheated I couldnt put my hand on them due to the heat. Unfortuately, im not a mechanic and learning on the fly so please excuse my info if its not 100 percent complete. HE told me that the t-stat was sticking so he changed it. The circulation of raw water through the motor wasnt great and when he popped off the risers and manifolds they were clogged and ruined, so he changed those the circulation improved. Changed the raw water pump and impeller. Took off all hoses and fittings and replaced them.

In the overheating diagnostic you gave me, there was a section about hooking up a computer to check overheat codes. The manual said it records each alarm and gives the severity but it dodnt go into any detail further...does this computer give the location of the of what is triggering the alarm or does it just give the severity?

Re: Follow Up VP 5.0 L Gxi-E

Was your mechanic doing all the tests while the alarm was going off?

It's probably not just an alam switch now. You are now saying the gauge was showing hot, and the alarm was going off. They are not the same switches/senders. You have 2 different things saying overheat.

The alarm never sounded while he was out there with me on Friday. We ran for about 20 mins while he checked everything with the IR gun. I took the boat out Sunday and ran in for approximately 30 mins on plane before the alarm sounded then.

The temp gauge was 225 + within seconds of being throttled on plane both times.

When you had the tech with you, what did the gauge read? Did it go above 180?

This whole thread has so much conflicting and misinformation in it.

No mention of alarms, then it's alarms, and gauge, now it gauge and no alarm, gauge goes off after 10 seconds, but with the tech it was ok for 20 minutes, then your trip alone ok for 30 then alarm. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgggggggg I'm going to be bald much of this.

Please give accurate information only.
I don't care if the gauge moves from 160 to 180 after 10 seconds that is normal, I need to know when it starts overheating. Does the temp gauge slowly rise from the time you go on plane for 30 minutes to get to 220?? When running on plane, what rpm does the gauge and alarms sound and how long after being at that rpm does it happen

When you throttle up to about 2500-3000 RPM the temp needle begins to climb and after about 10 seconds the needle is sitting over 220 degrees. Thats happend everytime. When you let off the throttle, the temp needle on the gauge begins to decrease almost immediately.

When I had the tech with me, the temp gauge read 220 within seconds of putting it on plane. Ran it for approximately 20 mins at approximately 3500-4000 RPM with him in the engine compartment checkign everything with IR gun. Alarm never sounded.

The alarm sounded this past Sunday. I was running at 3500-4000 RPM for approximately 30 mins before it sounded.

Fantastic, now it's making some sense.
I am going to look at a few things here, may take a while. Seems Volvo has wiring diagrams for the 5.0Gxi-D skips E and a new manual for the F models. But I do have some training manuals for the E models when they came out.

In the old days this would be obvious...new thermostat..the very fact it jumps up and down indicates water boilng and blasting the thermo open

Yeah, but they used a temp gun on the thermostat housing and it checked ok.

I overlooked one thing. I was thinking sender and switch seperate, when in fact the ECT sensor controls the gauge and the alarm. If it's off, it can indicate the engine is hot and sound the alarm when there is nothing wrong with the engine.

Re: Follow Up VP 5.0 L Gxi-E

Trying to find some info on the ECT sensor without running the boat.
It does look like it can be checked with a scan tool to verify what it's saying. The use the IR gun at the base of the sensor to see what the temp actually is when the gauge reads 220?.

I'll relay this info to my mech first thing in the morning.

He would have noticed if it was 220 degrees when he was checking things with the IR gun for 20 mins.

This should help you check out the ECT sensor.
