that i very keen on as a "first boat" however two issues
1. my wife figures boats in general will get cheaper closer to xmas and she doesn't want to move right now. Is that the case..when generally speaking is it a "buyers market" ?

2. the boat is a good 5 hr drive cross border.(Can to US) I have spoken to the owner, seen lots of close up photos...boat looks good. BUT I/ we are nervous about just going on the owner's word on the state of primarily the engine (volvo penta 3.0) and I am considering asking for a mechanical inspection and report. Would it be reasonable to ask to split the cost of that, or is it all on me? OR if I were to make an offer contingent on an inspection OR proceed with the sale and arrange an "holdback" to be released on a clean bill of health?

things that are making me go hmmm...
cheers,

Get a survey done on the whole boat, your dollars.

It would be a wise move on your part to get an inspection and I would nail down the price by way of a contingent offer. As to splitting the cost, that is a judgement call. I am not a fan of the holdback method as this can lead to disputes - and when the seller has a chunk of your money and the boat guess who looses in resolving the dispute.

In my experience the best time to get deals is anytime after the end of the season and a couple - three months before the start of the next. In any case if you make a deal now don't wait any period of time to pick it up. The seller may sell it out from under you.

I'm new here and not that knowledgable about boats but consider that the dollar might be worth even less around Christmas then it is now.

agree with SBN, by the time you drive to look at it, spend the night, you can have a survey. and imho the 3.0 is small look for a 4.3 minimum.

Wow...quite a rant...and a bit of a crock. I've checked out the pricing in the Okanagan quite a bit and there is no 'softening' on the traditional boat prices up there. At least not yet. The U.S based boats are still a way...wayyyy better deal than anything I've seen out of the Okanagan in the last 3-4 months. The border issues are almost non-existent now and the G.S.T on a lower priced boat to begin with is not that big a deal. The only 'barrier' is the interest in not spending a day or 1-1/2 days going to get your boat. Staying home to do your shopping will that weekend will probably cost you an extra $4-$6000...and I'd travel for that kind of dough.
Seriously check out Craigslist Spokane or Seattle or Las Vegas for that matter and compare prices to Craigslist Kelowna. You'll be glad you investigated the difference.
That said, if you do go get the boat stateside you can wait in the line at the border crossing with all the used boat dealers out of Kelowna and swap stories.

My mistake on assuming you were in the U.S.
I'm changing my advice to if you find the boat you want jump on it now cuz if you don't someone else will.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: found a boat....but...

My daughter listed her boat on Craigs List and had numerous calls from, and sold the boat to a Canadian resident. While the transaction was not a problem, a bank check for more than $10,000 will be held by the cashing U.S. bank for a few days thanks to the counter terrorism situation we are faced with.

...I think this has more to do with bank procedures on international cheques and funds rather than....terrorism. (Unless the cheque was ticking)

as an american, you have no clue as what canadians face trying to bring back something across the boarder. free trade my a..!
try a six pack of beer sometime. it can cost you $25 bucks! (thats $26.50 to you) or a pack of smokes @$18.00!
customs canada is ruthless.
and gst has nothing to do with it. gst is just a department of customs canada.

as a professional purchaser/import/exporter, you havent the foggiest idea of what it means to a canadian when they ask him at the border "did you purchase anything while in the united states?"

do you even know where he lives? look at a map! gas here is $1.10 a lieter (thats approx $4.50 a gallon)

and did i say anything about craiglist?
i gave him inside information that would save him huge.

BTW. if you wanna buy lakeshore property here, on the MLS is goes for $2.5 mill. OR you can talk to a professional purchaser and get it for $600,000

better know the territory before you accuse someone of spouting a crock
your idea of him looking for a boat to buy in vegas is not the brightest thing ive heard.

DALMAN
talk to dirk hell save you huge, and you will NEVER get a boat that has been in salt water, lots in the seattle area have been. thats why they are cheap!

and tell the wife i said go get'em next game!

....I am a Canadian....and I have brought back larger ticket items from the U.S...including vehicles. I'm ok with 'local shopping' but I'm not interested in taking a $5000+ hit on anything just to support my local sales lot. I'll spend a Saturday and into a Sunday on the road down stateside of the border for that kind of dough. .....kind of fun really. If you've been watching CBC lately and the trend/pressure on Canadian retailers to 'get real' and thus in line more with U.S pricing if they want to continue to stay in business. I think it's a good thing....as a believer in fair and competitive pricing. The Craigslist/Vegas comment was only meant to show how to use a random U.S source for price comparison....use Spokane, or Seattle or L.A it doesn't really matter. You are right about the real estate issue tho'....way too much dough up here right now for recreational property.
No offence meant on my previous feedback to you....however, Canadian prices on boats and vehicles are simply not yet in line with U.S prices. Period.
They will go that way and the amount of Canadians heading south now and (just watch) over the next 6 months is going to be a retailers dream on the U.S side of the border. Again...this will be a good thing for all.
....now, if we could just get our Gas gouges...ooops I mean 'prices' down.
