Well another 'perfect" reason for gas to go up again. Yesterday it was around 360 for reg ,today 400 to 430 with gas lines at all stations and some are rationing it to just 10 gal per purchase. One station I saw has locked all of its pumps and waiting for the spot shortage to justify unknown higher prices. More windfall profits for the companys is a sure thing. What a ripp off.

As I read on another post it's all about supply and demand. They own the supply and can demand any price!!

A local issue? Gas here is $3.49 and widely available.

Perhaps one of the local TV stations need to do a report.

One of ours did on the "hot" gas dispensing problem and is still huge issue.

Get something wholesale for $1 add a 10% margin you make $1.10 if the wholesale price double you still add your margin 10% but now you made 20 cents and record profits

Prices are going up because of the number of refineries which exist along the Texas and Louisiana coastlines. Since Hurricane Ike is in the process of hammering most of them right now, refining operations have been shut down. No refining operations means no gasoline to ship to NC and other places.

Interesting how the market 'fluctuates'. When the price of oil drops 10%, it takes upwards of a month for it to filter through the market to affect consumers as they refining oil purchase at last month's prices.

When there is a few refineries shutdown in preparation for IKE on speculation of the potential path and affects, our gas prices go up 10% immediately. Why, did next month's oil show up early?

Price of a liter of gas in Ottawa just went from $1.16 to $1.32. ($4.45 to increased to $5.08 a gallon)

While I don't disagree with the thought that oil companies are quick to raise prices but take their time in lowering them, this isn't a situation of "a few" refineries being closed. There are currently 13 refineries closed in Texas alone - that lost production amounts to 20% of US gasoline consumption. There are also six refineries in Louisiana which are most likely closed, and a few more that might be closed.

Considering that we could have about 30% of US refining capacity shuttered, expect higher pump prices to be a reality for awhile. How long this remains true will be a function of physical damage to the facilities (refineries and offloading/transportation facilities), and time needed to restore power.

Gas here increased by $1.30 a gallon so far today, and they are saying another round of increases will come tonight (another 60 to 80 cents they are saying). It's close to $5/gallon already.

Dont go there .Its not a polictical statement. If it were a nasty pit bull wearin the lipstick maybe so.As far a gas part of the reason is what I call "the yuppy factor" Around here most people dont give a ratts arse at to how much it cost as long as they can get all they want, when they want it and most inportant that NO ONE gets it before they do.

I going to assume that the refineries to not store the gas they produce, that the gas is pump to different parts of the country and stored locally. With that being said a hurricane just doesn't pop up like a tornado. They have weeks to get prepared especially when they been refining at reduced rates.

Yeah, there may be an actual shortage... but is that really a good excuse to raise prices that much? At least one station around here didn't raise their prices, they just closed the pumps when they ran out... they earned my respect right there, and I'll buy my gas and convenience store items there from now on.

PS - For those that live out this way, they're the Raceway in Solway, TN

I remember the gas "shortage" back in the 70's. The shortage was no place to dock the tankers that were lined up the Chesapeake to unload because all the tanks on land were full.

Didn't we build an Alaskan transcontinental pipeline which was supposed to cure the "shortage" issue? Why are we exporting approximately 20% of it to Japan? Let them go buy it from OPEC.

BP wants to build a natural gas pipeline - but it seems Alaska doesn't want it. Competition? BTW - Alaska while considering this is also considering exporting to Asia.

And my neighbors laugh at my solar panels.

How can you argue with people who really believe oil companies set gas prices?

There are 8 refineries shut down right now and will be shut down for a long while. Get ready for actual shortages until they are able to import gas to make up for th shortfall.
