Gas usage??

Hello all, I am new to this forum. I just purchased a 93 Bayliner Capri 1700 Bowrider with a 70hp Force motor. The wife and I took it out for our maiden voyage on Sunday. I have 2 6.5 gallon gas tanks onboard. The motor runs great, plenty of power, and tops out at around 38mph just like I have read that it should. We were only out for about 2 1/2 hours and mostly driving it at 25 to 38 mph. We used up just about all of our fuel. Is this normal for this boat - motor combo to use this much gas???

Yeah, Forces love gas...figure 4-5 gallons an hour..throttle back to around 3500 for best mileage

Re: Gas usage??

Rule of thumb 70 hp about 7 gal.per hour at WOT.
Best mpg is is about when the boat is well on plane but just above squating.
rpm will depend on boat ,load etc.

Re: Gas usage??

I have used acetone in a car to clean up for the emissions test. Works a treat !!......but it increases the gas usage dramatically.
1 gallon per hour per 10hp motor size as a rule of thumb and a whole lot less by throttling back a little.

Re: Gas usage??

also many people clame to double there milage be putting 1-3 once pure asetone in there tank

That's just silly. The acetone will burn...no problem, but I don't see any physical possiblity that it will improve mileage at all, much less double it.

There are laws of physics. They don't respond to old wive's tales.

Acetone is nasty stuff on plastics. It is a solvent for many of them. I'd keep acetone away from outboard motors.

Feh!

In the early days, there used to be a scam about using a chemical to make cars burn water. See: Acetone can be mixed with a lot of water and still burn. The problem is that it destroys the engine in the process.

When you add Acetone to the gas, you burn more gas because the Acetone partially washes off the oil film increasing engine internal resistance.

Re: Gas usage??

im not trying to start a fight here but there are tons and tons of articles on the web about how you can double your gas mileage
as well as increase HP by 5%-15% reduce emissions and increase engine longevity this is all beacuse the asetone suposably make for a much cleaner burn by aididing in the evaporation of the gas heres a vid on it

Re: Gas usage??

Fuel economy on 2 stroke outboards at wide open throttle is not significantly different than it is with a carbed four stroke, and only very little different in the injected four strokes. The DFI engines get most of their economy in the midrange. That said, one need only go to Yamaha's web site and look at performance tests where you can compare two and four stroke models for speed and fuel consumption. To answer the posters original question, if you did as I suggested, you will see the 10% of HP rule applies in nearly every case but does vary somewhat for lightweight but high power boats, heavy low powered boats, heavy high power and light, low power. Here is just one example (90 HP Yamaha 2S on an 18 foot bay boat).

FuelEconomy-90Yam2S.jpg

Note that all across the rpm range, fuel economy (MPG) varies less than 0.6 MPG at the three sweet spots. In this example, best MPG is achieved at 5000 RPM and an extra 6 MPH only costs you 0.6 MPG. So, if one juggles the numbers, at 5000 RPM (36 mph) you would need to run another 10 minutes to go 42.5 miles. So my question is, unless you just want to poke along or even cruise fairly fast, but less than WOT, is that 0.6 MPG really a significant savings? I don't think so. To make matters worse, you could cruise at 3500 RPM and again, get 5.2 MPG but you are only moving at 23.4 MPH. So at that rate you are burning 4.5 gallons of fuel per hour. Sounds economical right? Wrong? If you had to go 42.5 miles, you would be better off running wide open as the trip would only take 9.1 gallons versus 9.0 gallons at 3500. Remember, you are only going 23 MPH so it takes twice as long, hence 4.5 x 2 = 9 gph. With todays gas prices at $3.00+/gallon the savings is inconsequential. These are Yamaha's figures, not mine. By the way -- I do run a fuel flow monitor on a 75 Merc 2S and it burns exactly 7.5 GPH at wide open throttle, with two aboard plus lots of gear on a 17 footer.

Car to explain why his light duty small engine car gets the same mpg as my truck at the begining of his test? Should probably get upper 20's to begin with....

The turning the car off thing is bogus as well....since the fuel injectors are programmed to add more fuel after start up for warm up purposes.

No way is removing 50lbs from the car going to change it that much either.

That was hogwash. IMHO

So someone says. Was this a controlled experiment? Who is this guy? The thing is, people have been running scams about gas mileage for decades. Why should we believe this guy?

Getting information from random videos on the web is hardly the best way to find good information.

But, hey...go ahead and dump some acetone in your tank. See for yourself. Check your mileage for a full tank of gasoline alone, doing your normal driving. Then fill up your tank and add whatever you want, but change nothing else and drive normally. Check your mileage for that fresh tank. I guarantee it won't double your mileage. I absolutely guarantee it.

In the meantime, be very careful not to spill the acetone on any plastic parts or paint...it'll eat it right off. Oh...that plastic inline fuel filter? I dunno, but you might want to check the acetone on that, too. Lots of other plastic parts in your fuel system, too. How's the acetone going to affect them.

There's a lot of nonsense on the web. You're welcome to jump on it, but don't expect woohoos from everyone. Go test it. Let us know from your own tests.

Thanks for the responses,

Thanks for the responses,

So I guess it seems pretty normal for the amount of gas that we burned. I will be purchasing 2 extra gas tanks and keep them filled and in my truck for days we plan on staying out more than a couple of hours.

Re: Gas usage??

I think those boats had an onboard below-deck fuel cell about an 18 gallon capacity. Has this been disconnected on your boat?

Re: Gas usage??

Add a magnetic fuel molecular structure modifier, a spark intensifier, acetone, 101 octane booster, and run wide open. In a short time your gas tank will run over due to the efficiency of all this quackery. Geez -- get a grip folks. If acetone doubled fuel mileage you would get a 55 gallon drum every new car.

Well Said !!!!
If this were true I would be putting 2 gallons in for my next trip and having some to spare !!! LOL

Studlymandingo,

Studlymandingo,

These boats did not come with an inboard gas tank. only a portable.

Re: Gas usage??

Katana,

Yes, boat engines use a lot of fuel.

Most tests of planing style boats I have read show a sweet spot at about 3000 rpm, but that might be for I/Os, not outboards.

After 30 years of owning ski type boats, we sold our ski boat two years ago and bought a pontoon boat due to the fuel costs. We now spend most of our time anchored in coves and not running around. If we want to be moving but don't have a particular destination, we can run at slower speeds burning about 1 gallon an hour. But we have a 115 hp engine that can push us to 25 mph if me need to get somewhere without taking all day.

Only on cold starts. The computer checks engine temp

Thanks JohnTN,

Thanks JohnTN,

The wife and I have only had the boat out one time, I think after a couple times out I will get better at driving it at more constant speeds and learn where abouts my best fuel milage is. It's just sooo much fun having it right to the boards..... :D
