It?s lights out for the light bulb.

On Jan. 1 it will become illegal to manufacture or import traditional 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs, thanks to a 2007 bill that set strict minimum efficiency standards ? and effectively outlawed the ordinary bulb.

And like a politician on Election Day, Home Depot is urging consumers to buy early and often.

?Get them while you still can,? the nation?s largest bulb retailer urges on its website. ?Stock up on incandescent light bulbs before they are completely discontinued.?

Re: Go get your light bulbs now

I have to laugh a bit....... I have gotten used to the new bulbs and did my major change-over years ago. My biggest complaint is how SLOW they are to supply full light in the cold weather. It is torture when they are used in cold areas.........

I think there may be legislation in place to prevent the sale of the old regular light bulbs after a certain date and stores want to wipe out their stocked ones.

We have quite a stock of them. Always grab a pack when we see them in passing at the stores.

I got some LED bulbs at Costco a few weeks back . . . About $7 / bulb in 3-packs. I would assume that the LED varieties will come down in price as they take hold and economies of scale kick-in , etc.

I think that I will replace every traditional bulb with an LED bulb at time of need. I'm not too keen on the Florescent replacement types, as they seem to have a shorter life span, and as mentioned, they take a while to deliver their full light power.

I hate the blue cast the LED have, I hope they continue ti improve them to the point they look like a regular bulb, I have a couple of 12v lights in my 5th wheel that are LED and they actually look like regular incandescent bulbs, I just hope they can eventually do this with the 120v versions.

A few months ago, our electrical co-op gave us a packages of several different types of CFL bulbs and they actually cast a warm light when turned on and they come on instantly with full power output, now I have not been able to find these in the local stores, I would not be unhappy with this type of CFL.

I'm kinda on the fence about the new technology lamps. All the data reports how much money you save when compared to tungsten lamps. It seems to me that all of the electrical energy that's converted to heat serves to heat your home. This works against your air conditioner, but works to help out your furnace. So, for those in northern climates where the furnace may be off during only 2 months of the year (and air conditioning used minimally), I think one needs to take a second look at the "wasted" energy of tungsten. The payback of using a cooler lamp has to be balanced against the cost of heating fuel. And for those already heating with electricity anyway, well ...

the curly bulbs run hotter than you may think! just for fun i put my ir thermometer on one and it read 202F at the base of the bulb, the lone led bulb i have showed 90.5f at its hottest spot.

We made the switch to all CFL/ LED when we moved into this house 3 years ago. We bought a package of each "color" to see which we liked best and actually preferred the bright white and daylight colors over soft white. The "whiter" light really makes an incandescence bulb stick out like a sore thumb.

Why the Bulb as Heater Argument Falls Short

For a large house not a good heater, but the 1000 hr, 100 watt in my 4'x6' well house sure does a good job till -30c.

I always laughed at a quote attributed to Muhammad Ali, "I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark."

What I like about the new CFLs is that now most of us can do that ! :)

I have heard this argument often, also, but in the end, a BTU (in this case a watt) of heat, is a BTU of heat, whether it comes from a light bulb, or electric heat, which would cost the same, but is controllable. Other heat sources, the BTUs cost what they cost, most likely less than electric, as you have stated.

Plus, "light bulb heat", for the most part stays at the ceiling, so is not of much use, IMO.

Agree. One of the cabins I watch has that setup.....

I guess it never crossed my mind about a light bulb or 3 having much impact, if any, on home heating......

Re: Go get your light bulbs now

I have my house converted to almost entirely LED. The only incandescent light bulbs are the few specialty bulbs that aren't made in LED yet.

My electric bill has been reduced considerably because of it. I also no longer have to change bulbs as often.

For my vacation rental, its even more important to switch over to LED. Renters love to leave the lights on, even when they aren't there and there are a lot less burnt out bulbs I need to replace when I check upon the house now.

When I replace my incandescent bulbs, I promptly throw them in the trash can even if they still work.

Re: Go get your light bulbs now

Jumped on the clf'd when they came out.
THen tried them again after they "improved" them.
Still don't like the light, in any color, always seems harsh on the eyes.
Many of my fixtures have exposed bulbs.
CFL"s seem to burn out faster than incandescents at my house, but do fine at dad's house. Probably something to do with the poor quality power I get out here in the boonies. 105v-125v, up and down all the time. maybe not, who knows.

Tried a 2 pack of led's, jury still out for my usage.

I love my GE Reveal bulbs for the natural color temp. I use them in my reading light and 3 of them over the dining table. Bought a case of them, 40w, over a year ago. Still have 47 of the 48 left. I am set for a long time, and by then, they might have the led's looking right, and at a decent price.

Have yet to find a cfl flood light for the yard that will give decent coverage-shine further than 20 feet, and work in cold weather.

Re: Go get your light bulbs now

Just a thought which hasn't been mentioned here. CFL's are a fluorescent lamp. ALL fluorescents us mecury to light. not to mention the miniature ballast at the base. All of this amounts to electronic waste going to our land fills.

In the new recently there is a big push on to reduce our electronic waste due to the toxics it has for ground water (Cadmium, more mercury etc)

IMO it is the same as the wind power generators. They produce cheap power from wind but a huge cost to the migratory bird population that most environmentalists refuse to talk about.
