You probably have an R outdrive which some people call a pre-alpha. Does it have a lifting eye on the top of the housing of the outdrive? The 898 is the engine model, find the serial number off of the drive, and it will tell you exactly when looking up parts. Someone may have replaced the drive with something different too.....that's right around the time where they change to the newer MR or Alpha one drive
Mine's an '84 898 with an MR drive......R = Redesigned....MR = Mercury Redesigned....
I think there are a couple of different kits

buy the whole pump assembly kit, and not just the impeller. hate to have you pull it apart to find the pump housing toast and have to wait to buy more stuff.

Ok Scott. I'm going order the whole kit. But the stupid serial number is partly gone. At the beganing of tnumber so like first two or three letter or number gone. So i dont know what type it is. Lol ugh.

Ok mark. It's does have the eye at the top of the drive. So am I ordering. Parts for R alpha drive.

Ok motor is ready to drop in. Few questions. I've been reading about engine alignment. I see in boat on the side motor mounts how there is what I think adjustment ..nuts the motor mounts sit. Not for sure if the guy before me has moved. Do I need to align the motor. And how difficult is that to do.

The engine/outdrive alignment is the most important part of putting everything back together. There is a lot of work involved in the installation of the engine/outdrive and if you don't align the two correctly after installation you will be paying for a tow bill when the engine coupler go south on you. This is a fairly simple procedure. First you MUST have an alignment tool.
