for years i have been fighting the Vent and Drain screws on the lower unit. today broke down and spent $23.00. impact screw driver, it is now one of my favorite tools in the box. put the right bit in it, put in slot, smack it with a hammer a couple of times, and the screw comes right out.

LoL, most of the time anyways. I have some on what I guess are the reeds of my motor (not entirely sure) and they ain't budgin. Don't know what to do with them.
Glad you finally grabbed one and like it. I've had one for a long time, used to work on my car a lot and needed one, so I got it. Now I find uses for it on this 60hp motor I'm working on all the time, freakin thing is held together by salt or something.

Re: Great Tool finally bought one.

About 2 months from now you'll be wondering how you ever got along without it.

Several years ago I was working with a friend of mine building a custom bike. It was a big stroker and, as per standard practice, we put loctite on EVERYTHING. I looked up and asked, "I wonder what they did before loctite?" kinda joking. Greg looked up with a surprised and scared look on his face and answered "I don't know." in a way that was clear the mere though was going to give him nightmares.

Several years before that I met a mechanic who was in the Red Army working on bikes during WWII. He was given a hammer and a screwdriver and sent to work. After telling his commander he didn't have the proper tools, his commander offered a transfer to the front. He made the hammer and screwdriver work until he made his own wrenches.

You can always make stuff work, but there's nothing like having the right tool for the job.

They're the cats meow,

working on chainsaw engines yrs ago a mechanic showed me how to remove crankcase bolts that have philips screw heads!
USe a dremel carbide disk to cut a straight slot then insert the impact driver.

Can't believe they used bolts with philip heads for crankcase halves.
And they're loctited in there.
Probably so they could install the bolts with a screwgun.

It comes in handy for the manual release screw too.

Talking tools, I was changing my outter tie rod end (failed inspection) on the E350 , nothing would touch the pinch bolt, my neighbort is a mechanic and came out with his 18v impact driver, zipped it out in a jif and the lugnuts too.
Gotta get one of those.

Then the tie rod end wouldn't unscrew out of the sleeve even with a breaker bar, so he drags out the oxy acetelyne , gets it smoking hot and it came right off.

Are you kidding me you didn't have an impact driver! I still wonder why they just didn't design them to accept an allen wrench.

If you get the kind with the 3/8 socket head the world is your oyster.

Allen wrench socket, 6-point socket, etc.

They are a great tool to have in your box. You will love it each time you need it and use it.

I bought one several years ago...maybe 25?...and I cannot find it. I guess I must turn my shop upside down to look for it. I do like my cordless Makita impact driver, same principle!

Almost. However, electric/air impact wrenches do not hold the bit in the slot and it wants to jump out. With the hand impact driver that you whack with a hammer, the hammer blow similtaneously drives the bit into the slot and causes a rotary force to loosen it.

When I switched from ridding euro dirt bikes to more jap ones in the 70's you had to buy a good impact driver, or you would never get all the philips head screws out of every damn thing they used them for. Back then the screws were so soft that one slip with a hand driver and the head was toast. Looking at a steel screw stuck in an aluminum case, not good. Bought a Mac one prob 30 years ago or more, still use it for lots of stuff, enjoy the power.

Re: Great Tool finally bought one.

I think I have all of mine. I bought one in the 70's, 90's and last year. I always put them in one of my tools boxes than can't find them when I need them. They had a reunion this year and are all sitting neatly in my boating roll away.

They never brake and the design never change. My first one was a Craftsman, second Post Tools and third Harbor Freight. The Craftsman was Chrome.

Talk about useless information. Sorry.

Snap-On 1975, about the same time that I got my set of Left Hand drill bits.

NEVER leave home without it!

CAREFUL how hard you smack the LU drain and vent screws, the alum casting is thin and too heavy a blow WILL make you buy another housing.

Also, all screws under the flywheel get a Love Tap on assembly to ensure nothing ever comes loose while on the water.

OK, what's a "left hand drill bit".....is that the same as a "nail hole puller".

Re: Great Tool finally bought one.

You're used to seeing drill bits that screw clockwise, same as most bolts.

Left hand bits spiral COUNTER-clockwise, like a left-handed thread.

Sometimes when drilling out a broken bolt or screw the bit will 'snag' and unscrew the broken stub, saving me the time normally used trying to get an extractor to work.

I picked one up at harbor freight last month for 6 bucks, although cheaply made it works just as good as my american built one---that I couldn't find.
