Re: Harley Davidson

I ride a 96 FLHTCI with the stage II screaming Eagle kit on it. I just put in a high performance composite clutch kit in it this summer. I bet I didn't put a thousand miles on it this season

Re: Harley Davidson

Here is one for all of the "chopper guys". Harley or not.

A childhood friend of mine, that I grew up with, all thru HS and on, has a chopper shop.

He joined the Army after HS, got into a light airborn infantry unit on his way to Special Forces. He was stationed in Italy when he met and fell in love with his now wife.

He got out of the Army, and opened up a motorcycle shop in Vicenza, called Full Blast Superbikes. He started designing and building his own Harley racers and choppers. All of this before Orange County and West Coast Choppers were famous and on TV.

He got into all of the CNC stuff and started manufacturing his own parts as well as frames. He was building stuff for races in Rome and Milan and such.

He ended up closing that shop, and returned to the US and set up shop again.

He has owned and run HellBent Choppers for about 3 years now.

I want to post his website. There is no advertizement or any way to make any kind of purchase online, so I do not think it violates any forum rules.
That is not my intent, I was just posting it to show the pictures of the most recent bikes he has built. If it is a violation, I appologize and again, that was not my intent.

If there are any Colts fans, check out the blue one under the bikes tab.

Re: Harley Davidson

I figured I'd post a few extra pics of bikes that my buddy has built over the years. 4 of the 5 I've had my hands involved in one way or another. I apologize for the size of these but it's all I have.

This started out as a stock sporty. A 1200 conversion was done to it along with extensive frame modifications. I helped with final assembly, wiring and made a custom LED tail light for it. It was featured in American Iron magazine.

This was one of the first softail frames that my buddies shop built. Has a 120cui Merch motor in it (big power) and I believe a Kawasaki Ninja front end. He rode it bare steel for a couple of years before deciding to paint it. He eventually lent it to someone, it got banged up and the following year totaled by someone who was supposed to buy it.

He calls this one "Jemima" and from what he's said of it, was one of his favorites. He built this one and sold it before I knew him (over 12 years ago).

This has to be the most interesting bike that never got finished. It sat around the shop for years and years. The rear tire was one of the first 250's made and he had a custom rim and hub assembly machined for it. The gas tank was half oil and half gas. Super long stretched sporty tank. The frame was custom built by him and as much as I pushed, he wouldn't put more rake and a springer on it. I thought the dimensions looked odd.

Because I like Jap bikes as much as Harleys, here's a super long Honda CB750 using a frame that I built.

Finally, not a Harley but another buddies Triumph chopper just missing the seat.

I know there are more pics but these bikes have always stood out from the rest. Well except a certain pan head that I seem to have lost the pictures of.

Re: Harley Davidson

From HowStuffWorks:

A Harley engine has two pistons. The difference in the Harley engine is that the crankshaft has only one pin, and both piston rods connect to it. This design, combined with the V arrangement of the cylinders, means that the pistons cannot fire at even intervals. Instead of one piston firing every 360 degrees, a Harley engine goes like this:

A piston fires.
The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
There is a 405-degree gap.
A piston fires.
The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
There is a 405-degree gap.

YES ... this is the exact reason for the unique exhaust sound ... and the shake rattle and roll ... and the oil leaks ... and so on ... LOL but also the main reason for them being a UNIQUE ride in terms of torque.

My first ride was a 1942 Harley 74 Springer cop bike (took the sidecar off it) stick shift & suicide clutch, non spring return gas handle, and manual spark advance on the left handle.

Second was a "Happy Days" styled BSA 650 ... looooved that one.

Last ride was a GL 650 Honda twin ... that could keep up with any 1340 cc Harley ... LOL

Re: Harley Davidson

HD isn't the only bike with a single pin crank. However, they have a patent on the "geometry" they use. So, even though it's no mystery how to build a bike that sounds like a Harley it can't be done legally.

Re: Harley Davidson

I see other guys wrench on them as well as ride them...Same here. I've turn the wrench on more than one. Here's shots of my gear drive cam swap, prepping the Ironhead's top end for paint, and a few more teardowns....I like working on them about as much as riding them.

I've always wanted a Harley, but can't afford it with other toys. This is what I've got. Not a Harley, but still a cruiser, and fun to ride!

Re: Harley Davidson

Everything I read and people I have spoken to, it doesn't do a darn thing to help performance.

No,I wouldn't believe it could improve performance either, but I'm saying it DOESN'T change the sound.[as I read here, some people think the 'harley sound' is caused by the wasted spark ignition] My twin cylinder lawn tractor engine with wasted spark doesn't sound at all like a Harley.;)

Re: Harley Davidson

The sound is from the degree of angle between the two cylinders and the ignition timing. Add a radical cam and low idle RPM and there's no mistaking the sound of a true Vee twin american torque monster

Re: Harley Davidson

A wasted spark ignition system is just that... it's a wasted spark and does nothing for the engine except simplify the ignition system. It doesn't increase or decrease performance, doesn't change the sound of the motor at all... just simplifies the ignition system.
