Has anyone noticed the new VP 225 V8 engine? Is this the future?

General boating observation but hoping it will open up to a discussion.

I'm not old enough- but is this a flashback to what the domestic manufacturers did in 1972 with retarding the HP on large displacement engines in the hope of maintaining power while reaching required MPG/ emissions standards?

It's a 225 HP V8 5.7L with alot of advanced features, is advertised as an alternative to a 4.3L and has a fuel burn quite better than a regular 5.0 or 5.7L.

Sounds to me like it is just cut off at the top end or maybe the compression is changed? Is this necessarly a good thing? I'm sure the Torque (something never advertised on boats but is what we depend on) is really good for towing sports...

Thoughts?

Well, if their plan was to phase out the 4.3L entirely, I'd say it makes sense. However, I don't know how many people will opt for the 5.7L and want the low-HP option unless it's significantly cheaper than the standard 270-300HP variants of the same 5.7L.

Gm has a new 4.3 claiming 300 hp for the 2014 Silverado. I wonder if it will come to the boating market?

Makes no sense at all. never heard of anyone wanting more weight and less power....

It's a miniscule amount of extra weight, the same HP, and a good bit more torque. You likely wouldn't notice much of a difference between the two engines, except a bit better holeshot and slightly higher fuel consumption.

This motor, along with the new 380HP V8 were introduced last year. GM won't be supplying blocks in the future, so "newer" technology will become the norm going forward.

I think it is a smart move. If they only have to work with one block then it will cost them less and they can pass the savings along to customers. As for the additional weight lets not forget that a v8 has more torque and a different curve then a V6. I think its the future for VP.

As for weight
V8 225HP 1,022.00 lbs
V6 225HP 922.00 lbs

We are talking 100Lbs here people.

Here is the boattest.com write up on it. I remember seeing this quite a while ago.

Volvo Penta V8-225 Inboard, Sterndrive, Control System 2013 Engine Test / Reviews Videos, Specs, Fast Facts, Captain reports | BoatTEST.com

"The mission of the V8-225 engine is to provide boaters in the 18’-24’ (5.5 m-7.3 m) range with a catalyzed 8-cylinder 5.7 L sterndrive alternative to smaller engines on the market, particularly the 6-cylinder 4.3 L engines. By providing a lot more torque at the low-end from a package that is only slightly larger and heavier than the 4.3 L engine, the new V8-225 ensures that boaters will unquestionably have the power needed in a single engine for towing sports and hauling around a crowd. Secondarily, as noted, she should be an engine of choice for boaters in high altitudes."

Where are you getting those weights from? Even the 460 in my streetrod doesn't weigh 1000lbs.

I've asked those questions before, seems the new blocks are aluminum where as the old ones being cast iron and making the torque at a lower RPM are what is desired (still I'd love to see a change!)

? Who will be supplying the blocks than? GM Hasnt made a 5.7L truck engine in a decade + yet it is still the industry standard.

In house manufacturing, at least for Mercruiser. Merc announced this upcoming change at the Miami show months ago. It's a 3-5 year transitional plan. VP has more in the works, but not much info yet.

This more than probably reflects the current retail trend in boating.....Wakeboard boating. Wake boats plow thourgh the water they need tourqe and bowrider or semi v actually planes more..less drag hence the need the need for less tourqe . I have a 300 hp 4.3 bowrider and a 300 hp 454 cuddy..empty the 4.3 wins the race day however place 5 people in the boats and the 4.3 really pulls down...high 40's is the end of the line. Now the 454 maybe a 4 mph loss.

QC will be along shortly...:lol:Speed is how fast you hit the wall
Torque is how far you move the wall"

It is not what you want, as much as what the EPA wants, I'll guess.
Low emissions and Catalytic Converters have their effects.

torque should be a far more important number than horsepower for boaters. horsepower sells a boat, torque is what moves it.

If that is the case, why would anyone want a 4 stroke? My 2.6L, #600 2 stroke, will run circles around 4 strokes twice it's size.

Torque gets it going. Horsepower gets it down the road
