Has anyone noticed the new VP 225 V8 engine? Is this the future?

Aren't most smaller stern drive boats rated for max hp just like outboards? I think my Stingray 198lx is rated for 225 hp max. If that's the case the smaller boats can now get the torque of a V8.

Well, the only boats subject to USCG maximum horsepower ratings are boats with hulls less than 20' in length. So your 198LX probably just falls to within that category. My old boat (200VBR) has the persons capacity plate, but no horsepower restriction. There is a formula that must be used by boats under 20' to compute the maximum horsepower rating. It takes into account boat length, transom width, and a multiplier based off of transom height/steering type and hull type.

Actually it's about $1200 to go from the V8 225 to the V8 270 , at least on a new Four Winns. I chose the non-cat V6 225 because I could still get one. It was an additional $2600 for the V8 225 and $4,000 for the 270.

I am having trouble with your math. ;) But, it's still a $4000 upcharge for 45 horses! ;) (it'll only get worse, I fear)
